Secondary hyperalgesia and perceptual wind-up following intradermal injection of capsaicin in humans.

1998

Wind-up and secondary hyperalgesia both are related to central sensitization, but whereas the former is explained by homosynaptic facilitation, the latter is due to heterosynaptic facilitation. To investigate possible interactions between both types of facilitation, we tested for alterations of perceptual wind-up in the secondary hyperalgesic skin zone adjacent to a capsaicin injection with light touch (by a cotton wisp) and punctate stimuli (calibrated von Frey hairs and pin pricks). Temporal summation of pain sensation (perceptual wind-up) was only observed with a clearly noxious stimulus (pin prick) presented at a repetition frequency of 0.6 s(-1), but not 0.2 s(-1). Pain ratings to trai…

Generalized hyperalgesia in patients with chronic tension-type headache.

2006

Increased pain sensitivity in the central nervous system may play an important role in the pathophysiology of chronic tension-type headache (CTTH). Previous studies using pain thresholds as a measure of central pain sensitivity have yielded inconsistent results and only a few studies have examined perception of muscle pain without involvement of adjacent tissues. It has been suggested that suprathreshold testing might be more sensitive than threshold measurements in evaluation of central hyperexcitability in CTTH. The aim of the study was to compare pain ratings to suprathreshold single and repetitive (2 Hz) electrical stimulation of muscle and skin in cephalic (temporal and trapezius) and…

How much Is needed? Comparison of the effectiveness of different pain education dosages in patients with fibromyalgia

2019

AbstractObjectiveTo assess the effect of different dosages of pain neuroscience education (PNE) programs on central nociceptive processing in patients with fibromyalgia. Second, to compare the effects of different dosages of PNE programs on numerical pain rating scale (NPRS), disability, and psychological variables.DesignSingle-blind randomized controlled trial.SettingThree fibromyalgia centers in Spain (Valencia, Alcorcón, Alcalá de Henares).SubjectsSeventy-seven patients with fibromyalgia.MethodsParticipants were randomized to four groups of PNE: 1) high-dose PNE (N = 20), 2) low–concentrated dose PNE (N = 20), 3) diluted low-dose PNE (N = 20), and (4) control treatment (N = 17), conducte…

Analytic structure ofϕ4theory using light-by-light sum rules

2013

Abstract We apply a sum rule for the forward light-by-light scattering process within the context of the ϕ 4 quantum field theory. As a consequence of the sum rule a stringent causality criterion is presented and the resulting constraints are studied within a particular resummation of graphs. Such resummation is demonstrated to be consistent with the sum rule to all orders of perturbation theory. We furthermore show the appearance of particular non-perturbative solutions within such approximation to be a necessary requirement of the sum rule. For a range of values of the coupling constant, these solutions manifest themselves as a physical bound state and a K-matrix pole. For another domain …

An algorithm based in Ewald's method to calculate lattice sums in the framework of crystal field theory

1992

A simple procedure to help calculate the electrostatic potential at any point inside an ionic crystal is proposed and tested. The rationale for the mathematical algorithm to calculate lattice sums is based on Ewald's technique. The method is discussed with regard to the dimensions and shape of the crystal lattice. Electrostatic potential for NaCl and MgO type structures are obtained and compared with the values calculated by means of Ewald's method

Product Integration for Weakly Singular Integral Equations In ℝm

1985

In this note we discuss the numerical solution of the second kind Fredholm integral equation: $$ y(t) = f(t) + \lambda \int\limits_{\Omega } {{{\psi }_{\alpha }}(|t - s|)g(t,s)y(s)ds,\;t \in \bar{\Omega },} $$ (1) Where \( \lambda \in ;\not{ \subset }\backslash \{ 0\} \) , the functions f,g are given and continuous, |.| denotes the Euclidean norm, and φα, 0 \alpha > 0} \\ {\left\{ {\begin{array}{*{20}{c}} {\ln (r),} & {j = 0} \\ {{{r}^{{ - j}}}} & {j > 0} \\ \end{array} } \right\},\alpha = m} \\ \end{array} ,} \right. $$ with Cj not depending on r. Here Ω _ is the closure of a bounded domain Ω⊂ℝm.

Measurement of dijet production with a veto on additional central jet activity in pp collisions at sqrt(s)=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

2011

A measurement of jet activity in the rapidity interval bounded by a dijet system is presented. Events are vetoed if a jet with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV is found between the two boundary jets. The fraction of dijet events that survive the jet veto is presented for boundary jets that are separated by up to six units of rapidity and with mean transverse momentum 50 < p¯T < 500 GeV. The mean multiplicity of jets above the veto scale in the rapidity interval bounded by the dijet system is also presented as an alternative method for quantifying perturbative QCD emission. The data are compared to a next-to-leading order plus parton shower prediction from the powheg-box, an all-order…

On an iterative method for a class of integral equations of the first kind

1987

In this paper, we investigate an iterative method which has been proposed [1] for the numerical solution of a special class of integral equations of the first kind, where one of the essential assumptions is the positivity of the kernel and the given right-hand side. Integral equations of this special type occur in experimental physics, astronomy, medical tomography and other fields where density functions cannot be measured directly, but are related to observable functions via integral equations. In order to take into account the non-negativity of density functions, the proposed iterative scheme was defined in such a way that only non-negative solutions can be approximated. The first part o…
