On quantum effects near the liquid-vapor transition in helium

2001

The liquid-vapor transition in He-3 and He-4 is investigated by means of path-integral molecular dynamics and the quantum virial expansion. Both methods are applied to the critical isobar and the critical isochore. While previous path-integral simulations have mainly considered the lambda transition and superfluid regime in He-4, we focus on the vicinity of the critical point and obtain good agreement with experimental results for the molar volume and the internal energy down to subcritical temperatures. We find that an effective classical potential that properly describes the two-particle radial distribution function exhibits a strong temperature dependence near the critical temperature. T…

Attenuation of the fourth sound in liquid helium II via extended thermodynamics

2004

Abstract This work continues a study begun in previous works, where a non-standard model of liquid helium II is proposed, in which a small entropy transfer is associated with the superfluid component. In this work the influence of this superfluid entropy on the propagation of the fourth sound is analyzed. From experimental data for velocities and attenuations of the first and second sound, the model provides speed and attenuation coefficient of the fourth sound in a porous medium as a function of the ratio ss/s between the superfluid entropy ss and the total entropy s. These values are determined in the two limiting cases ss/s=0 and =0.02, for various values of temperature and pressure.

Vortex density waves and high-frequency second sound in superfluid turbulence hydrodynamics

2010

In this paper we show that a recent hydrodynamical model of superfluid turbulence describes vortex density waves and their effects on the speed of high-frequency second sound. In this frequency regime, the vortex dynamics is not purely diffusive, as for low frequencies, but exhibits ondulatory features, whose influence on the second sound is here explored.

Isothermal flow of helium II through plane slits

1972

Measurements are reported on the isothermal, gravitational flow of liquid He II through narrow plane slits. The employed superleak consists of ring-shaped Hostaphan foils packed in layers. The distance between the foils is varied by pressure. The performance of the measurements and the observance of the isothermal conditions are described. The velocity of the superfluid component of He II is calculated in dependence on the width of the slits, the temperature and the hydrostatic pressure. Especially the critical velocity is considered.

Superfluid properties of the inner crust of neutron stars

2011

We investigated the superfluid properties of the inner crust of neutron stars, solving the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations in spherical Wigner-Seitz cells. Using realistic two-body interactions in the pairing channel, we studied in detail the Cooper-pair and the pairing-field spatial properties, together with the effect of the proton clusters on the neutron pairing gap. Calculations with effective pairing interactions are also presented, showing significant discrepancies with the results obtained with realistic pairing forces. At variance with recent studies on finite nuclei, the neutron coherence length is found to depend on the strength of the pairing interaction, even inside the nucleu…

Interweaving of elementary modes of excitation in superfluid nuclei through particle-vibration coupling: Quantitative account of the variety of nucle…

2015

A complete characterization of the structure of nuclei can be obtained by combining information arising from inelastic scattering, Coulomb excitation, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-decay, together with one- and two-particle transfer reactions. In this way it is possible to probe both the single-particle and collective components of the nuclear many-body wave function resulting from the coupling of these modes and, as a result, diagonalizing the low-energy Hamiltonian. We address the question of how accurately such a description can account for experimental observations in the case of superfluid nuclei. Our treatment goes beyond the traditional approach, in which these properties are calculated …

Turbulent Superfluid Profiles and Vortex Density Waves in a Counterflow Channel

2012

In this paper we study the two-dimensional profiles of the superfluid component velocity and the quantized vortex-points density in a counterflow channel where the influence of the walls cannot be neglected. The numerical results obtained show the presence of vortex density waves in the channel, as shown in a recent paper by means of the one-fluid model.

Non-equilibrium Thermodynamical Description of Superfluid Transition in Liquid Helium

2017

In previous papers a phase field model for λ-transition in 4He was proposed, which is able to describe the influence of the heat flux on the temperature transition. The model presented here generalizes previous results taking into account of a homogeneous presence of quantized vortices below the λ-transition. As parameter that controls the transition, a dimensionless field f linked to the modulus of the condensate wave function is used. In addition to the field f , the resulting model chooses the following field variables: Density, velocity, temperature and heat flux. Nonlocal terms to describe inhomogeneities in the field variables and dissipative effects of mechanical and thermal origin…

Effects of heat flux on lambda transition in liquid 4He,

2014

This paper is concerned with the derivation of a phase field model for λ-transition in 4He, when the liquid is subject to pressure and heat flux. As parameter that controls the transition, a field f that is the geometrical mean between the density of the fluid and that of the superfluid is used. The resulting model, that is a generalization of previous papers on the same subject, chooses as field variables the density, the velocity, the temperature and the heat flux, in addition to this field f. The restrictions on the constitutive quantities are obtained by using the Liu method of Lagrange multipliers. New results with respect to previous models are the presence of non-local terms to descr…

Imprints of superfluidity on magnetoelastic quasiperiodic oscillations of soft gamma-ray repeaters.

2013

Our numerical simulations show that axisymmetric, torsional, magnetoelastic oscillations of magnetars with a superfluid core can explain the whole range of observed quasiperiodic oscillations (QPOs) in the giant flares of soft gamma-ray repeaters. There exist constant phase QPOs at $f\ensuremath{\lesssim}150\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$ and resonantly excited high-frequency QPOs ($fg500\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{Hz}$), in good agreement with observations. The range of magnetic field strengths required to match the observed QPO frequencies agrees with that from spin-down estimates. These results suggest that there is at least one superfluid species in magnetar cores.
