Summary.  Background: Combined vitamin K-dependent clotting factor (VKCF) deficiency type 2 (VKCFD2) is a rare bleeding disorder caused by mutated vitamin K 2,3-epoxide reductase complex subunit 1 (VKORC1) gene. Methods and results: An Italian patient with moderate to severe bleeding tendency was genotyped, and found to be homozygous for the unique VKORC1 mutation (Arg98Trp) so far detected in VKCFD2. The activity levels of VKCFs were differentially reduced, and inversely related to the previously estimated affinity of procoagulant factor propeptides for the γ-carboxylase. Objective: To evaluate the association between mercury exposure and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), total triiodothyronine (TT3) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels during pregnancy as well as to explore if there is any synergic action between mercury and intake of iodine from different sources. Methods: The study population was 1407 pregnant women participating in the Spanish INMA birth cohort study. Total mercury concentrations were analyzed in cord blood. Relationship between Thyroid Status during the First Trimester of Pregnancy and Neonatal Well-Being

Iodine is an essential micronutrient for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The proper functioning of the thyroid axis is essential for the normal development of the nervous system, especially in the first trimester of gestation. The aim of the present study was to analyze the perinatal outcomes, anthropometry, and APGAR test scores of newborns and to relate them to maternal thyroid status. A total of 190 newborns participated in the study. The health benefits of the Mediterranean diet can be largely ascribed to the nutraceutical properties of extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO). Mono-unsaturated fatty acids and various phenolic compounds, such as oleocanthal, oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and tyrosol, are the main nutraceutical substances of EVOO. The PREDIMED (Prevención con Dieta Mediterránea) study was designed to assess the long-term effects of the Mediterranean diet (MeDiet) without any energy restriction on incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) as a multicenter, randomized, primary prevention trial in individuals at high risk.
