The introduction of information and communication technologies can be a source of competitive advantages for the retailer, even if at significant cost. In the present work we try to identify the factors that characterize companies that invest in these technologies to automate warehouse management and, in particular, the relation between the degree of automation and the retail assortment. In order to achieve this aim, we consider a sample of distributors of ceramics and building supplies in Spain. The results suggest that warehouse management automation is related to the depth and breadth of the products carried in the retail assortment.
Influence of Time Pressure on the Outcome of Intercultural Commercial Negotiations

ABSTRACTIt is essential, in commercial negotiations, to know how time pressure is expressed among customers and suppliers and which its effect on the outcomes of negotiation is. Must pressure be applied or not? In order to solve this question, 21 customer/supplier negotiation case studies were carried out (intercultural and intracultural). We have evidenced that an adequate time pressure, at low levels, produced outcomes that tend to be positive. Also, the national culture of the negotiators may influence the decision about using or not time pressure in these processes; especially when considering In-Group Collectivism and Uncertainty Avoidance dimensions.

The warehouse is one of the essential components of logistics and supply chains. The efficiency of the whole chain is affected by the performance of warehouse operations and, more particularly, the storage and retrieval of goods. In this work, a mixed-integer binary non-linear two-echelon inventory problem is formulated for a vendor-buyer supply chain network in which lead times are constant and the demands of buyers follow a normal distribution. In this formulation, the problem is a combination of an (r, Q) and periodic review policies based on which an order of size Q is placed by a buyer in each fixed period once his/her on hand inventory reaches the reorder point r in that period. Methodological Approach to Studying the dynamics of production networks: a Discrete Event Simulation Model

This paper shows how discrete-event simulation represents an appropriate tool for approaching the dynamics of production networks. Three important factors influencing production network dynamics, specifically finite production capacity, manufacturing lead time, and its variability are discussed and a basic discrete-event simulation model is presented. Such model, which in its basic form represents a simple retail/distribution two-stage supply chain, is then extended in order to take into account those factors that can not be included in a classical control theoretical model.

Modelling the Bullwhip Effect Dampening Practices in a Limited Capacity Production Network

This work infers on the conjoint adoption of collaboration practices and replenishment rules as bullwhip dampening techniques in a limited capacity production network. Continuous time differential equation methodology is adopted to model three supply chain configurations. Results show that theconditio sine qua non for long-term capacity strategy is the management and control of information asynchronies, provided by collaboration practices and ad-hoc decision policies. Furthermore the study reveals the phenomenon of bullwhip rough dampening.
Fair Transfer Prices of Global Supply Chains in the Process Industry

This work addresses the optimisation of transfer prices for the fair profit distribution among the members involved in a global supply chain in the process industry. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model is developed for production and distribution planning of global supply chains, where the optimal transfer prices of products between plants and markets are determined. Two solution approaches are presented for fair solutions using Nash and lexicographic maximin principles. The applicability of the proposed models and approaches are demonstrated by an illustrative example. The results show that both approaches can fairly distribute the whole supply chain’s profit to the members.
