A fuel cell-battery hybrid power supply for portable applications

2010

Today, academic and industrial research is addressed to fuel cell based hybrid power supply in many fields of applications including stationary, automotive and portable electronics. Increasing source runtime, speeding up the transient response while minimizing weight, volume and cost of the power supply system are key requirements of all applications. According to the particular application, the power management system is optimized for a specific feature. In this paper, a fuel cell–battery hybrid power supply for a Digital Camera is proposed, although the control algorithm can be efficiently applied to any portable device. Thanks to an innovative control on the input power, any fuel cell pr…

UPS fuel cell based: An innovative back-up system

2007

The aim of the paper is to evaluate the technical feasibility and aspects related to the use, in an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS), of fuel cells instead of traditional electrochemical batteries. The proposed system, named UPS-FCB (Fuel Cell Based) presents a modular and versatile system configuration; particularly it is possible to integrate it with traditional UPS. Moreover the system features can be modified in terms of power, reliability, back-up time, etc., by changing the power devices. A detailed experimental analysis has been carried out on a passive stand-by UPS integrated with a FCB; experimental results can be easily extended to the other possible system architectures. © 2007…

Measurement-based load modelling for power supply system design

2008

Load modelling is essential to simulate system features as closely as possible to the effective behaviour. In spite of model complexity, the need for accuracy often leads to a component-based approach, i.e. the analysis of load internal subsystems. It is a common belief that measurement-based load models lead to low accuracy. This paper presents a new, high-accuracy measurement-based load modelling approach to define a power consumption profile load model for power systems design. The load modeling technique is described by an application. Simulation and experimental results are compared. The efficiency and portability of the proposed modelling approach is discussed. ©2008 IEEE.

Optimized Topology for High Efficiency Battery Discharge Regulator

2008

In the following years power levels of 20 kW to 50 kW will be demanded by the telecommunication satellites. It is not possible to keep 0.5 kW modules with up to 100 modules in parallel and, therefore, higher power modules must be used. A higher bus voltage seems also necessary and any voltage below 150 V and above 100 V could meet the needs. In addition, new optimized topologies that process only a part of the total power delivery can be employed to improve the efficiency. In this article, design guidelines and experimental results of a high efficiency battery discharge regulator (BDR) module based on parallel power processing are given.

Innovation Diffusion in the European Ceramic Tile Industry Supply Chain

2016

Following Nelson's primary typology of enterprises based on a characterization of their technical change process (bulk commodities; complex systems producers; and chemical products producers) this chapter presents a case study on the innovation diffusion in the European tile industry based on the analysis of its manufacturing process and supply chain. The producers of ceramic tiles, the machinery producers and the frits and glazes producers fit each of Nelson's categories. Further, the European ceramic tile industry is clustered in two southern European regions: Emilia Romagna (Sassuolo – Italy) and Valencia Region (Castelló de la Plana – Spain) with a different configuration of the type of…

A novel fuel cell-based power system modeling approach

2013

Nowadays, fuel cells are the most promising source of energy for stationary applications. Unfortunately, the power density of fuel cells is not adequate for modern applications. A fuel cell - based hybrid power supply is required. The fuel cell is coupled with a high-energy density power source to improve performances of the composite power source. A power management stage is introduced between the two basic sources to control the power flow path from the fuel cell to the auxiliary source and the load. In order to avoid effects of a limited power density of the fuel cell on the whole power supply, sophisticated power management algorithms are implemented. Accurate modeling is required to te…

Cross-Flow Turbine Design For Energy Production And Discharge Regulation

2015

Cross-flow turbines are very efficient and cheap turbines that allow a very good cost/benefit ratio for energy production located at the end of conduits carrying water from a water source to a tank. In this paper a new design procedure for a cross-flow turbine working with a variable flow rate is proposed. The regulation of the head immediately upstream the turbine is faced by adopting a shaped semicircular segment moving around the impeller. The maximum efficiency of the turbine is attained by setting the velocity of the particles entering the impeller at about twice the velocity of the rotating system at the impeller inlet. If energy losses along the pipe are negligible, the semicircular …

A Technique for Power Supply Harmonic Impedance Estimation Using a Controlled Voltage Disturbance

2002

A method for power system impedance estimation is presented. The method employs a power converter to inject a voltage transient onto the supply system. As the technique employs controlled power electronic devices it may be used as a stand alone piece of a portable measurement equipment, or it may be embedded into the functions of an active shunt filter for improved harmonic control. The impedance is estimated through correlation of the measured voltage and current transients. Simulations and experimental results demonstrate the measurement technique is highly accurate and effective.

Are Farmers in Alternative Food Networks Social Entrepreneurs? Evidence from a Behavioral Approach

2015

Social entrepreneurship, individual activities with a social objective, is used in this study as a conceptual tool for empirically examining farmers’ participation in alternative food networks (AFNs). This study verifies whether their participation is driven by the social entrepreneurship dimension to satisfy social and environmental needs. We develop a more inclusive view of how social entrepreneurship is present among farmers participating in AFNs by using a behavioural approach based on three main psychological constructs: attitude, objective, and behaviour. The empirical results show that two types of farmers participate in AFNs. One type is closer to commercial entrepreneurs; the main …
