Abstract This paper compares the energy and environmental impacts of organic and conventional apples cultivated in the North of Italy, by applying the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The authors examined the supply chain of apples, including the input of raw materials and energy sources, the farming step, the post-harvest processes and the distribution of apples to the final users. Size reduction of EMI filter in power converters is an important aspect due to its significant impact on the overall converter volume and weight. Crossflow turbines represent a valuable choice for energy recovery in aqueducts, due to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency under variable head jump conditions. Multi Sources Water Supply System Optimal Control: A Case Study

The optimal operation of a multi quality network was analysed applying Linear Programming methods. The peculiar service condition of the industrial city of Gela (Italy) was investigated. The network is supplied both from waters derived from a desalination plant and other natural sources. The method aimed to minimise energy cost and find the optimal operation control, while satisfying demand and quality constraints, specifically with regard to water temperature. The method proved to be effective in the selection of the optimal management strategy after the definition of a specific water quality target. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Multi-party metering: An architecture for privacy-preserving profiling schemes

Several privacy concerns about the massive deploy- ment of smart meters have been arisen recently. Namely, it has been shown that the fine-grained temporal traces generated by these meters can be correlated with different users behaviors. A new architecture, called multi-party metering, for enabling privacy-preserving analysis of high-frequency metering data without requiring additional complexity at the smart meter side is here proposed. This study is focused on the optimization of the annual cost and greenhouse impact related to the supply of natural gas and electricity of an urban microgrid through the installation of components as renewable energy sources, energy storage units and converters. As input parameters of the optimization model, the energy demand of a medium density urban district was estimated, while average costs and emissions of equipment were collected in market reports and literature. When is Green Really Green? A Latvian Case Study on Updating of Food Supply Green Public Procurement

Abstract Green public procurement (GPP) is an important tool and is used to reduce adverse environmental impacts caused by food production. To have a more detailed look at the application of GPP in Latvia, the authors screened 97 public tenders for supply of food products, documenting the choice of the green criteria. Only 15 % of the screened tender documents corresponded to the national GPP requirements. Only 4 % of the tender documents gave higher priority exclusively for organic products compared to products within national quality schemes or integrated pest management agriculture. Competitive Equilibrium theory has been a widely accepted and extensively used cornerstone in economics for over a century. Here, we suggest a complementary model—motivated by the haggling in a bazaar—that offers a useful, first-principle account of market behavior that better accounts for the observed outcomes in forty market experiments. The Bazaar model uses simple stochastic processes to drive the matching of traders and the determination of price. We show that as agents become more impatient, the system tends toward more Competitive-Equilibrium-like outcomes.
