The potential of temporal analysis: Combining log data and lag sequential analysis to investigate temporal differences between scaffolded and non-sca…

2020

This paper contributes to the ongoing discussion about analysing the temporal aspects of learning processes in the educational technology research field. Our main aim was to advance methods for analysing temporal aspects of technology-enhanced learning (TEL) processes by introducing the temporal lag sequential analysis (TLSA) technique and by combining TLSA with temporal log data analysis (TLDA). Our secondary aim was to illustrate the potential of these two analysis techniques to reveal the differences between the face-to-face technology-enhanced collaborative inquiry-based learning (CIBL) processes of three different conditions (non-scaffolded, writing scaffolded and script scaffolded gro…

An efficient data model for energy prediction using wireless sensors

2019

International audience; Energy prediction is in high importance for smart homes and smart cities, since it helps reduce power consumption and provides better energy and cost savings. Many algorithms have been used for predicting energy consumption using data collected from Internet of Things (IoT) devices and wireless sensors. In this paper, we propose a system based on Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) to predict energy consumption of a building using collected information (e.g., light energy, day of the week, humidity, temperature, etc.) from a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). We compare our system against four other classification algorithms, namely: Linear Regression (LR), Support Vector Machin…

Are climate change policies politically costly?

2023

Are policies designed to avert climate change (Climate Change Policies, or CCPs) politically costly? Using data on governmental popular support and the OECD's Environmental Stringency Index covering 30 countries between 2001 and 2015, our results show that CCPs are not necessarily politically costly: policy design matters. First, in contrast to non-market-based CCPs (such as emission limits), only market-based CCPs (such as emission taxes) entail political costs for the government. Second, the effects are only present when CCPs are adopted during periods of high oil prices, prior to elections, or in countries depending strongly on non-green (dirty) energy sources. Third, CCPs are only polit…

Real-Time Assembly Support System with Hidden Markov Model and Hybrid Extensions

2022

This paper presents a context-aware adaptive assembly assistance system meant to support factory workers by embedding predictive capabilities. The research is focused on the predictor which suggests the next assembly step. Hidden Markov models are analyzed for this purpose. Several prediction methods have been previously evaluated and the prediction by partial matching, which was the most efficient, is considered in this work as a component of a hybrid model together with an optimally configured hidden Markov model. The experimental results show that the hidden Markov model is a viable choice to predict the next assembly step, whereas the hybrid predictor is even better, outperforming in so…

This paper investigates the proficiency of support vector machine (SVM) using datasets generated by Tennessee Eastman process simulation for fault detection. Due to its excellent performance in generalization, the classification performance of SVM is satisfactory. SVM algorithm combined with kernel function has the nonlinear attribute and can better handle the case where samples and attributes are massive. In addition, with forehand optimizing the parameters using the cross-validation technique, SVM can produce high accuracy in fault detection. Therefore, there is no need to deal with original data or refer to other algorithms, making the classification problem simple to handle. In order to…

On the moving multi-loads problem in discontinuous beam structures with interlayer slip

2017

Abstract This contribution proposes an efficient approach to the moving multi-loads problem on two-layer beams with interlayer slip and elastic translational supports. The Euler-Bernoulli hypothesis is assumed to hold for each layer separately, and a linear constitutive relation between the horizontal slip and the interlaminar shear force is considered. It is shown that, using the theory of generalized functions to treat the discontinuous response variables, exact eigenfunctions can be derived from a characteristic equation built as determinant of a 6 x 6 matrix. Building pertinent orthogonality conditions for the deflection eigenfunctions, a closed-form analytical response is established i…

Piping erosion is one form of water erosion that leads to significant changes in the landscape and environmental degradation. In the present study, we evaluated piping erosion modeling in the Zarandieh watershed of Markazi province in Iran based on random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and Bayesian generalized linear models (Bayesian GLM) machine learning algorithms. For this goal, due to the importance of various geo-environmental and soil properties in the evolution and creation of piping erosion, 18 variables were considered for modeling the piping erosion susceptibility in the Zarandieh watershed. A total of 152 points of piping erosion were recognized in the study area that…

Educare alla cura tra le generazioni. Una riflessione pedagogica sul concetto di generatività

2021

The paper aims to present, through an educational approach, a reflection about generativity, defined as the desire to leave a positive legacy and related activities that raise outcomes for future generations. However, today some studies suggest that generativity as a targeted midlife task may no longer be sufficient for explaining a life course pattern of generative concerns, commitment, and actions, and it refers to a generative concern during adolescence, to a generative commitment in adulthood, and to a sense of integrity, the result of a generative life, in old age. Some scholars of symbolic-relational area interpret the generativity as an essentially relational construct: it is the val…

Identification and characterization of novel associations in the CASP8/ALS2CR12 region on chromosome 2 with breast cancer risk.

2014

Previous studies have suggested that polymorphisms in CASP8 on chromosome 2 are associated with breast cancer risk. To clarify the role of CASP8 in breast cancer susceptibility, we carried out dense genotyping of this region in the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) spanning a 1 Mb region around CASP8 were genotyped in 46 450 breast cancer cases and 42 600 controls of European origin from 41 studies participating in the BCAC as part of a custom genotyping array experiment (iCOGS). Missing genotypes and SNPs were imputed and, after quality exclusions, 501 typed and 1232 imputed SNPs were included in logistic regressionmodels adjusting for stud…
