Prior to the introduction of caplacizumab, the treatment for aTTP was based on daily therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE; to replenish functional ADAMTS13 enzyme) plus immunosuppression (mainly corticosteroids and rituximab; to suppress anti-ADAMTS13 autoantibody production).
