The subtle balance of weak supramolecular interactions: The hierarchy of halogen and hydrogen bonds in haloanilinium and halopyridinium salts

2010

The series of haloanilinium and halopyridinium salts: 4-IPhNH3Cl (1), 4-IPhNH3Br (5), 4-IPhNH3H2PO4 (6), 4-ClPhNH3H2PO4 (8), 3-IPyBnCl (9), 3-IPyHCl (10) and 3-IPyH-5NIPA (3-iodopyridinium 5-nitroisophthalate, 13), where hydrogen or/and halogen bonding represents the most relevant non-covalent interactions, has been prepared and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. This series was further complemented by extracting some relevant crystal structures: 4-BrPhNH3Cl (2, CCDC ref. code TAWRAL), 4-ClPhNH3Cl (3, CURGOL), 4-FPhNH3Cl (4, ANLCLA), 4-BrPhNH3H2PO4, (7, UGISEI), 3-BrPyHCl, (11, CIHBAX) and 3-ClPyHCl, (12, VOQMUJ) from Cambridge Structural Database for sake of comparison. Bas…

Azobenzene-based difunctional halogen-bond donor: Towards the engineering of photoresponsive co-crystals

2014

Halogen bonding is emerging as a powerful non-covalent interaction in the context of supramolecular photoresponsive materials design, particularly due to its high directionality. In order to obtain further insight into the solid-state features of halogen-bonded photoactive molecules, three halogen-bonded co-crystals containing an azobenzene-based difunctional halogen-bond donor molecule, (E)-bis(4-iodo-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)diazene, C12F8I2N2, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of the non-iodinated homologue (E)-bis(2,3,5,6-tetrafluorophenyl)diazene, C12H2F8N2, is also reported. It is demonstrated that the stud…

Crystallography of encapsulated molecules.

2017

The crystallography of supramolecular host–guest complexes is reviewed and discussed as a part of small molecule crystallography. In these complexes, the host binds the guests through weak supramolecular interactions, such as hydrogen and halogen bonding, cation–π, anion–π, C–H–π, π–π, C–H–anion interactions and the hydrophobic effect. As the guest often shows severe disorder, large thermal motion and low occupancies, the reliable crystallographic determination of the guest can be very demanding. The analysis of host–guest interactions using tools such as Hirshfeld and cavity volume surface analysis will help to look closely at the most important host–guest interactions. The jewel in the cr…

Modification of the supramolecular structure of [(thione)IY] (Y = Cl, Br) systems by cooperation of strong halogen bonds and hydrogen bonds

2015

Four interhalogen complexes of heterocyclic thione ligands N-methylbenzothiazole-2-thione (mbtt) and 2(3)H-benzothiazole-thione (btt) with strong and tunable S⋯I halogen bonds were synthesized and characterized by X-ray single crystal diffraction. The study of the strength and nature of the interactions was supported by computational analysis using the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). Halogen bond and hydrogen bond directed self-assemblies of thione compounds were efficiently modified by the changes in the halogen bond donor and acceptor structures. In structures [(mbtt)ICl] (1) and [(mbtt)IBr] (2) the interplay of halogen bonds and hydrogen bonds between the thione hydrogens a…

Exploring the Interplay Between Ligand Derivatisation and Cation Type in the Assembly of Hybrid Polyoxometalate Mn-Andersons

2012

Herein a library of hybrid Mn-Anderson polyoxometalates anions are presented: 1, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 -C-(CH2 )7 CHCH2 )2 ](3-) ; compound 2, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-NHCH2 C16 H9 )2 ](3-) ; compound 3, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-(CH2 )7 CHCH2 )1 ((OCH2 )3 C-NHCH2 C16 H9 )1 ](3-) ; compound 4, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-NHC(O)CH2 CHCH2 )2 ](3-) and compounds 5-9, [(MnMo6 O18 )((OCH2 )3 C-NHC(O)(CH2 )x CH3 )2 ]), where x = 4, 10, 12, 14, and 18 respectively. The compounds resulting from the cation exchange of the anions 1-9 to give TBA (a) and DMDOA (b) salts, and additionally for compounds 1, 2 and 3, tetraphenylphosphonium (PPh4 ) (c) salts, are explored at the air/water interface using scan…

Supramolecular Heteropolyoxopalladate {Pd15} Cluster Host Encapsulating a {Pd2} Dinuclear Guest: [PdII2-{H16-nPdII15O10(PO4)10}]n-

2011

Ahigh-nuclearity polyoxopalladate compound, [PdII2⊂{H7PdII15O10(PO4)10}]9 {PdII17}, comprising a {Pd15} host occupied by a {Pd2} guest and the parent pristine “empty” [H7PdII15O10(PVO4)10]13 {Pd15} cluster have both been prepared and characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, 31P NMR, CSI-MS, and XPS. The encapsulated {Pd2} has a short PdII PdII distance within the {Pd15} host. Solution studies indicate that the empty host and filled guest complex are in equilibrium with each other, and UV titrations revealed a binding constant of ca. 103 for the guest PdII ions, with a binding stoichiometry of almost 2.

Solvent Exchange in Thermally Stable Resorcinarene Nanotubes

2006

The assembly of C-methyl resorcinarene into a tubular supramolecular solid-state structure, its thermal stability, and its hosting properties are reported. Careful control of the crystallisation conditions of C-methyl resorcinarene and 1,4-dimethyl-1,4-diazoniabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (1,4-dimethyl DABCO) dibromide leads to a formation of two crystallographically different, but structurally very similar, solid-state nanotube structures. These structures undergo a remarkable variety of supramolecular interactions, which lead to the formation of 0.5 nm diameter nonpolar tubes through the crystal lattice. The formation of these tubes is templated by suitably sized small alcohols, namely, n-propano…

Folding induced supramolecular assembly into pH-responsive nanorods with a protein repellent shell

2018

We report the synthesis of ABA' triblock peptide-polysarcosine-peptide conjugates featuring two complementary phenylalanine-histidine pentapeptide strands A/A'. These sequences encode for antiparallel beta-sheet formation into folded conjugates, which promote the self-assembly into polysarcosine-shielded core-shell nanorods. These do not cause aggregation of serum proteins in human blood plasma underlining an enhanced stability.
