Synthesis, Structural, Thermal and Magnetic Characterization of a Pyrophosphato‐Bridged Cobalt(II) Complex

2008

The reaction in water of CoII sulfate heptahydrate with 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and sodium pyrophosphate (Na4P2O7) in a 2:4:1 stoichiometric ratio resulted in the crystallization of a neutral dinuclear CoII complex, {[Co(phen)2]2(μ-P2O7)}·6MeOH (1), as revealed by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study. The bridging pyrophosphato ligand between the two [Co(phen)2]2+ units in a bis(bidentate) coordination mode places the adjacent metal centers at 4.857 A distance, and its conformation gives rise to intramolecular π–π stacking interaction between adjacent phen ligands. Indeed, intermolecular π–π stacking interactions between phen ligands from adjacent dinuclear complexes create a supramo…

Supramolecular stabilization of the phosphite-based polyoxomolybdate [Mo6(PO3)(HPO3)3O18]9−

2007

Abstract A novel phosphite-based hetero-polyoxomolybdate, [Mo 6 (PO 3 )(HPO 3 ) 3 O 18 ] 9− , has been isolated and structurally characterized. The most striking feature of this polyanion is the presence of peripheral phosphite groups linked to the MoO 6 octahedra. In the solid state, this cluster shows strong hydrogen bonding interactions that apparently play a key role in its stabilization and isolation from solution.

Unexpected magnetic topology in the heterobimetallic [ReIVBr4(μ-ox)CuII(bpy)2] compound

2011

Abstract A novel oxalato-bridged rhenium(IV)-copper(II) compound, namely [ReIVBr4(μ-ox)CuII(bpy)2] (1), has been obtained by reacting (PPh4)2[ReBr4(ox)] with Cu(CF3SO3)2 and 2,2′-bpy in CH3CN, and its crystal structure determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Intermolecular Br⋯Br interactions and nonbonding Cu⋯Br type contacts between the heterobimetallic dinuclear units lead to a two-dimensional supramolecular structure. Compound 1 behaves magnetically as a [ReIVCuII]2 tetranuclear species with weak antiferromagnetic interactions through the oxalato bridge and intermolecular Br⋯Br contacts.

A rare isostructural series of 3d–4f cyanido-bridged heterometallic squares obtained by assembling [FeIII{HB(pz)3}(CN)3]− and LnIII ions: synthesis, …

2021

A new series of cyanido-bridged {FeIIILnIII}2 neutral molecular squares of general formula [Fe{HB(pz)3}(CN)(μ-CN)2Ln(NO3)2(pyim)(Ph3PO)]2·2CH3CN [Ln = Ce (1), Pr (2), Nd (3), Gd (4), Tb (5), Dy (6) and Er (7); {HB(pz)3}− = hydrotris(pyrazolyl)borate, pyim = 2-(1H-imidazol-2-yl)pyridine and Ph3PO = triphenylphosphine oxide] were obtained by reacting the low-spin [Fe{HB(pz)3}(CN)3]− species with the preformed [LnIII(pyim)(NO3)2(pyim)(Ph3PO)]+ complex anions (generated in situ by mixing the nitrate salt of each Ln(III) ion with pyim and Ph3PO molecules). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that 1–7 are isostructural compounds that crystallize in the triclinic P space group. Their cry…

Chiral Self-Sorting of trans-Chelating Chiral Ligands upon Formation of PdII Complexes

2014

Invited for the cover of this issue is the group of Arne Lutzen at the University of Bonn, Germany. The cover image shows two dissymmetric bis(3-pyridyl) ligands based on a planar chiral pseudo-ortho-disubstituted [2.2]paracyclophane scaffold. Upon forming a mononuclear [ML2] complex with palladium(II) ions, these ligands act in a trans-chelating manner and undergo complete chiral self-sorting.

Metals in supramolecular chemistry

2014

Abstract Metals have played a fundamental role in the development of supramolecular chemistry. The main steps taken from the pre-supramolecular age to the present time are retraced with a brief description of salient examples from the unconscious use of gold nanoparticle in the preparation of the Lycurgus cup (5th or 4th century B.C.) to the modern use of metals as templates, for the preparation of large self-assembled structures, of molecular sensors, switches, motors and machines, for mimicking biological processes, for tissue and organ imaging or for the application of the Boolean logic at the molecular level.

Binding of ion pairs and neutral guests by aryl-extended meso‑p-hydroxyphenyl calix[4]pyrrole : The interplay between three binding sites

2023

An aryl-extended calix[4]pyrrole with four meso‑p-hydroxyphenyl substituents was investigated as a host for chloride, acetate, and benzoate anions. Crystal structures of pyridinium and imidazolium chloride complexes were obtained in which chloride ions are hydrogen bonded exo-cavity to the upper rim hydroxyl groups, and the aromatic cations are bound to the shallow cavity of the host. Furthermore, the calix[4]pyrrole formed a hydrogen bonded dimeric capsule templated by inclusion of adiponitrile guest in the endo-cavity binding site. NMR titrations revealed the preference of the OH groups of the host to bind anionic guests in solution. Benzoate anion had the highest binding constant (4 700 …
