Second harmonic generation in self-assembled alternating multilayers of hemicyanine containing polymers and polyvinylamine
1995
Abstract Assembly of noncentrosymmetric multilayers is a facile technique for preparing noncentrosymmetric films avoiding electrical poling procedures and problems from subsequent relaxation of the induced orientational order. A maximum Xzzz of 13 × 10−9 esu was achieved for the assembly of up to six layers. Current problems are the long-term hydrolysation of the hemicyanine nonlinear optical chromophores and the reduction of polar orientation with increasing layer thickness.
Polymerization of mono- and multilayer forming diacetylenes
1977
Heptadeca-2,4-diine-1-ol and Heptadeca-2,4-diine-1-acid were synthesized and their polymerization behaviour in the solid state was investigated. Both compounds polymerize thermally below the melting point and photochemically under the action of uv-light to form polymers via 1,4-addition to the conjugated triple bonds with a backbone of conjugated double-and triple-bonds. The photoresponse spectra resemble the absorption spectra exhibiting maxima of photoreactivity in the absorption band of the conjugated triple bonds of the monomers.
Photoreactive Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn multilayer assemblies from functionalized liquid-crystalline side chain polymers, I. Homopolymers containing azo…
1991
Stable monomolecular layers of a liquid-crystalline homopolymer bearing azobenzene chromophores in the mesogenic side groups could be prepared at the water–air interface by slow compression at room temperature. From the area per monomer unit of A0≈0.25 nm2 a structural model with tightly packed azobenzene groups oriented nearly parallel to the surface normal was deduced. After transfer to a solid support in a Y-type mode the obtained Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn (LBK) multilayer assemblies of varying thicknesses (from a double layer to a thick film of d = 238 nm, capable of guiding optical modes) were prepared and analyzed by X-ray reflection and optical evanescent wave techniques. A monolayer th…
Synthesis of Processable Inorganic‐Organic Hybrid Polymers Based on Poly(silsesquioxanes): Grafting from Polymerization Using ATRP
2008
Inorganic-organic hybrid polymers have been synthesized utilizing atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from a functionalized poly(methylsilsesquioxane) (PMSSQ) macroinitiator. Different polymeric ATRP initiators were prepared by co-condensation of functionalized trichlorosilanes with methyltrimethoxysilane. Various vinyl monomers have been successfully grafted from these macroinitiators, demonstrating a highly variable synthetic concept, which offers the chance to synthesize a wide spectrum of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers. All synthesized polymers were soluble in various organic solvents. Spin-coating these hybrid materials onto various substrates could produce stable and adhere…
Glycopolymer Functionalization of Engineered Spider Silk Protein-based Materials for Improved Cell Adhesion
2014
Silk protein-based materials are promising biomaterials for application as tissue scaffolds, due to their processability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The preparation of films composed of an engineered spider silk protein (eADF4(C16)) and their functionalization with glycopolymers are described. The glycopolymers bind proteins found in the extracellular matrix, providing a biomimetic coating on the films that improves cell adhesion to the surfaces of engineered spider silk films. Such silk-based materials have potential as coatings for degradable implantable devices.
Temperature-Responsive Surface Coatings Based on Poly(methylsilsesquioxane)-hybrid Polymers
2007
The present paper presents a new method to build up temperature-responsive surfaces. First a poly(silsesquioxane)-block-poly(N-isopropyl-acrylamide) (PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM) was successfully synthesized using RAFT polymerization. Spin-coating or dip-coating of PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM onto glass surfaces resulted in temperature-responsive surfaces. Surface ATR FT-IR measurements proofed the successful surface modification using PMSSQ-b-PNIPAM. IR fine structures of PNIPAM and PMSSQ could be assigned, respectively. In capillary rise experiments a change of the meniscus height measured at temperatures below or above LCST was observed, indicating a different wetting behavior. Thus, a simple spin- or dip-coating…
Influence of processing conditions on some properties of anionically synthesized polycaprolactam in presence of lithium chloride
1980
Nylon 6–LiCl systems of various concentrations were prepared by anionic polymerization of caprolactam in the presence of salt. A depression of both crystallization rate and melting temperature was evidenced through x-ray, density, and DSC analyses. Such a preliminary characterization allowed for choosing the proper conditions in order to obtain amorphous fibers from a spinning operation which was performed at a temperature lower than the pure polymer melting point. These results are of technological relevance, especially in view of obtaining, as in similar cases, large amorphous orientations through a spinning–drawing process and high-modulus fibers after subsequent crystallization. Also, t…
Polymeric amphiphiles with hydrophilic main chain spacers: Studies in monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers
1988
A methacrylic lipid was polymerized to form an amphiphilic homopolymer and random copolymers with various levels of acrylic acid comonomers. The behavior of these polymeric lipids was investigated in monolayers at the air-water interface and in Langmuir-Blodgett multilayers on polymer foil supports. The acrylic acid acts as a hydrophilic spacer along the polymer backbone, and improves the ability of the polymer to self-organize into highly ordered monolayers and ultimately LB multilayers. It is shown that the quality and stability of the multilayers increase substantially with the increase in comonomer content.
Influence of plasticizers suggests role of topology in polymer solidification at high cooling rates
2012
Although solidification in processing deter- mines short- and long-term properties, methods for under- standing polymer crystallization mostly rely on real time experiments. Their evidences being drawn on time scales farther apart with respect to those experienced in process- ing. Nor significant outcomes have been so far drawn with approaches mimicking the typical processing times, the Continuous Cooling Transformation methods. Use of these techniques has indeed been limited to a heuristic interpretation of the structure developed under extreme solidification conditions without suggesting alternative routes to the understanding or even clues to the many open questions on polymer crystalliz…
