Investigation of the swelling behavior of cationic exchange resins saturated with Na+ ions in a C3S paste

Ion exchange resins (IERs) are widely used by the nuclear industry to decontaminate radioactive effluents. Spent products are usually encapsulated in cementitious materials. However, the solidified waste form can exhibit strong expansion, possibly leading to cracking, if the appropriate binder is not used. In this work, the interactions between cationic resins in the Na+ form and tricalcium silicate are investigated during the early stages of hydration in order to gain a better understanding of the expansion process. Comparative evaluation of the swelling and degrees of cross-linking in three organic gel packings for SEC through some geometric parameters.

Abstract The size exclusion chromatographic (SEC) behavior of five solvent/polymer systems in three organic column packings based on polystyrene/divinylbenzene (PS/DVB) copolymer, TSK-Gel H HR , μ-styragel and TSK-Gel H XL , has been compared. All the packings offer similar characteristics (pore size, particle size and efficiency) but some differences have been found when eluting the same systems. Chemical hydrogels based on a hyaluronic acid-graft-α-elastin derivative as potential scaffolds for tissue engineering

In this work hyaluronic acid (HA) functionalized with ethylenediamine (EDA) has been employed to graft α-elastin. In particular a HA-EDA derivative bearing 50 mol% of pendant amino groups has been successfully employed to produce the copolymer HA-EDA-g-α-elastin containing 32% w/w of protein. After grafting with α-elastin, remaining free amino groups reacted with ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether (EGDGE) for producing chemical hydrogels, proposed as scaffolds for tissue engineering. Fracture Toughness of Hydrothermally Aged Epoxy Systems with Different Crosslink Density

Abstract The present work investigates the fracture toughness behaviour of Single Edge Notched Bending (SENB) samples of epoxy systems subject to water uptake aging. Processing-structure-property relationships of electrospun PLA-PEO membranes reinforced with enzymatic cellulose nanofibers

Abstract Three different solvent mixtures were used to prepare electrospun membranes based on polylactic acid (PLA), polyethylene oxide (PEO) and enzymatic cellulose nanofibers (CNF). The materials were characterized from a morphological, spectroscopic, mechanical and rheological point of view. Furthermore, swelling test were performed in order to assess the water uptake of each sample. The results put into evidence that the choice of the solvents affects the structure and the properties of the membranes. Abstract Responsive hydrogels filling the interstitial spaces of photonic crystals can form mesoscopically structured materials, which exhibit reversible shifts in the Bragg diffracted light as a response of environmental changes. Hydrophilic membranes based on poly(vinyl methyl ether-crosslinked-polystyrene) semi-interpenetrating networks

Microporous membranes were prepared from poly(vinyl methyl ether - crosslinked-polystyrene) (PVME-cross-PS) semi-IPN's by extraction of poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) with water. Membrane morphology and properties are fixed during the process of swelling, phase separation, PVME extraction and vitrification which occurs upon immersing the samples in water. The membranes are characterized by swelling (water uptake), the relative amounts of free and bound water, and their permselectivity towards KCI solution.

Energy Consumption for the Desalination of Salt Water Using Polyelectrolyte Hydrogels as the Separation Agent

The energy consumption for a novel desalination approach using charged hydrogels under externally applied pressure is experimentally measured and calculated. The salt separation is based on a partial rejection of mobile salt ions caused by the fixed charges inside the polyelectrolyte network. Self-synthesized and commercial poly(acrylic acid) hydrogels are used to study the desalination performance in reference to sodium chloride solutions within the concentration range of 0.1–35 g L−1. Characterization of a Superabsorbent Polymer.

We studied an amorphous polymer superabsorbent, able to absorb until 1000 times its weight of water. It is consisted of macromolecular chains, dependent between them by chemical bonds. The swelling of the product in the presence of water gives rise to a polyelectrolytic gel. The chemical analysis of polymer by energy dispersive spectrometry and photoelectrons spectroscopy with a microsounder X showed that the product is homogeneous. It contains carbon, oxygen, and sodium. The measurements of specific surface of the product show that the polymer is nonporous and present a weak surface of about 2.1 m2/g.
