Resistive switching behaviour in ZnO and VO 2 memristors grown by pulsed laser deposition
2014
The resistive switching behaviour observed in microscale memristors based on laser ablated ZnO and VO 2 is reported. A comparison between the two materials is reported against an active device size. The results show that devices up to 300 × 300 μm 2 exhibit a memristive behaviour regardless of the device size, and 100 × 100 μm 2 ZnO-based memristors have the best resistance off/on ratio.
Functional Definition of a B Cell Epitope, KGEQGEPGA, on C1q the Fc-Binding Subunit of the First Component of Complement
1999
A synthetic peptide representing the C1q epitope KGEQGEPGA has been shown to suppress or delay the onset of CII-induced arthritis when applied intravenously (i.v.) prior to an intradermal (i.d.) challenge, in a mouse model; the phenomenon being associated with the development of immunoglobulin (Ig)M antibodies specific for the KGEQGEPGA epitope. Here we show that this amino acid sequence provides an immunodominant B cell epitope that is recognised by autoantibodies present in the sera of patients with chronic inflammatory diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and rheumatoid arthritis, two diseases associated with an immune response to C1q. The peptide's ability to produce pept…
Bilingual practices and the social organisation of video gaming activities
2010
Abstract Grounded in the interactional paradigm for the study of bilingual language use, this paper investigates how players engaged in a collaborative game-playing activity orient to the co-presence of two languages in the setting and deploy bilingual resources in organising their action and participation. The analysis aims to demonstrate how a particular kind of ‘bilingual order’ ( Cromdal, 2005 ) is co-constructed in which the players use their native language (Finnish) for interaction with each other, but systematically draw on the language of the game in constructing their turns as recognisable and building their alignments with respect to activities under way. The analysis highlights …

Speaking English in Finnish content-based classrooms
2007
: CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) is a term widely used in Europe to refer to different forms of content based education, often conducted in English. Earlier research on CLIL has tended to focus on matters of language learning or content mastery rather than on details of classroom interaction. This paper investigates how English is used in Finnish biology and physics CLIL classrooms. Classrooms are approached from a discourse-pragmatic perspective which involves close attention to social and interpersonal aspects of language use as it unfolds in authentic settings. The findings suggest that CLIL students claim ownership of English by the way they confidently use it as a res…
Two languages in the air : a cross-cultural comparison of preschool teachers’ reflections on their flexible bilingual practices
2016
Bilingual preschool education is under researched compared with bilingual school education. There is also a lack of research on bilingual preschool teachers’ agency and how they negotiate between two languages in the classroom. We examined the language practices of five bilingual preschool teachers working within three different socio-linguistic settings, in Finland (Finnish–Swedish and Russian–Finnish contexts) and Israel (an Arabic–Hebrew context) and interviewed the teachers about their use of languages in the classroom. We found that in each context the teachers reported modifications to an initial bilingual education model over time: from a strict separation of languages, to flexible b…

Input-to-state stability for discrete-time nonlinear switched singular systems
2016
Discrete-time nonlinear switched singular systems (SSSs) are investigated. The input-to-state stability (ISS) problems for discrete-time nonlinear SSSs are concerned. The ISS criteria are obtained via average dwell time approach and iterative algorithm of discrete-time systems. The switching rules are optimized and designed. This paper investigates the input-to-state stability (ISS) problems for a class of discrete-time nonlinear switched singular systems (SSSs). Two novel ISS criteria are proposed based on average dwell time (ADT) approach and iterative algorithm of discrete-time systems (IADS). In particular, the following two cases are considered for the underlying systems: the first case i…
Robust reliable passive control of uncertain stochastic switched time-delay systems
2014
This paper investigates the problem of robust reliable passive control for a class of uncertain stochastic switched time-delay systems with actuator failures. The multiple Lyapunov functions (MLFs) technique is exploited to derive a delay-dependent sufficient condition for the stochastic switched time-delay systems to be passive and exponentially stable under a state-based switching law. Moreover, the proposed approach is extended to investigate stochastic switched systems with structured uncertainties. Finally, two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
