Dielectric breakdown of fast switching LCD shutters

Fast liquid crystal optical shutters due to fast switching, vibrationless control and optical properties have found various applications: substitutes for mechanical shutters, 3D active shutter glasses, 3D volumetric displays and more. Switching speed depends not only on properties of liquid crystal, but also on applied electric field intensity. Applied field in the shutters can exceed >10 V/micron which may lead to dielectric breakdown. Losses in inverter-fed permanent magnet motors are underestimated by using analytical or numerical approach since additional losses due to extra harmonics of the frequency converter are normally skipped. Further, losses in switches and passive components of the converter and the effect of switching frequencies cannot be numerically taken into consideration. Loss-minimizing control and proper efficiency analysis of inverter-fed permanent magnet motors cannot be achieved if an efficiency map is built based on a numerical investigation of the motors alone. Range expansion results from complex eco-evolutionary processes where range dynamics and niche shifts interact in a novel physical space and/or environment, with scale playing a major role. Obligate symbionts (i.e. organisms permanently living on hosts) differ from free-living organisms in that they depend on strong biotic interactions with their hosts which alter their niche and spatial dynamics. Chemical host detection and differential attraction in a parasitic pea crab infecting two echinoids

Mechanisms of host detection and host choice are important for mobile parasites or symbionts that frequently move among host individuals. The parasitic pea crab Dissodactylus primitivus is an ectoparasite exploiting asymmetrically two spatangoid echinoid hosts, Meoma ventricosa and Plagiobrissus grandis. The entire life cycle takes place on M. ventricosa, while only adults colonize P. grandis, the host where female's fecundity is the greatest. A Novel Solution for the Elimination of Mode Switching in Pump-Controlled Single-Rod Cylinders

This paper concerns the stability issue of pump-controlled single-rod cylinders, known as mode switching. First, a review of the topic is provided. Thereafter, the most recently proposed solution for the elimination of mode switching is investigated and shown to result in unstable behavior under certain operating conditions.
