Upper secondary school students’ use of and attitudes to English tags within Finnish speech and writing
2010
The genotypes and virulence attributes of C. albicans isolates from oral leukoplakia
2021
Background There is a debate as to whether some types of oral leucoplakias (OL) are caused by Candida species, and whether they contribute to the malignant transformation, associated with a minority of such lesions. As no detailed population analysis of yeast isolates from OL is available, we evaluated the virulence attributes, and genotypes of 35 C. albicans from OL, and compared their genotypes with 18 oral isolates from healthy individuals. Material and Methods The virulence traits evaluated were esterase, phospholipase, proteinase, haemolysin and coagulase production, and phenotypic switching activity, and yeast adherence and biofilm formation. DNA from OL and control yeasts were evalua…
Transmission and host and mate location in the fish louse Argulus coregoni and its link with bacterial disease in fish
2007
Kalatäi (Argulus coregoni) on pääasiassa lohikaloilla esiintyvä äyriäispintaloinen, jonka levinneisyys ulottuu koko pohjoiselle vyö…
Preliminary test on a cascode switch for high-frequency applications
2020
Nowadays, an increasing electrification level is being addressed towards different sectors, such as transportation and industrial electronics. To bear that, high speed electrical machines represent a mature technology in different application fields, e.g. avionics, automotive, compressors and spindles. In order to guarantee high speed while keeping high power quality without adopting bulky filtering circuits, DC-AC converters shall be controlled by means of high Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) frequencies. In addition to the emerging switching device technologies, such as those based on Silicon-Carbide (SiC) and Gallium-Nitride (GaN), alternative circuital topologies are crucial in order to co…
Marginal bone loss in relation to platform switching implant insertion depth: an update
2011
A review is made, analyzing marginal bone loss in relation to the depth of implant insertion with platform switching, according to the position of the neck (supracrestal, crestal or subcrestal), and evaluating survival of the implants. A PubMed search was made of the studies in animals and humans published between 2005 and 2011, specifying platform insertion depth (supracrestal, crestal or subcrestal) and registering marginal bone loss from the time of prosthetic restoration to the end of follow-up (minimum 6 months). A total of 30 studies were included. The bone loss associated with implants placed at supracrestal level was slightly smaller than in the case of implants placed at subcrestal…
Spatial Memory Drives Foraging Strategies of Wolves, but in Highly Individual Ways
2022
The ability of wild animals to navigate and survive in complex and dynamic environments depends on their ability to store relevant information and place it in a spatial context. Despite the centrality of spatial memory, and given our increasing ability to observe animal movements in the wild, it is perhaps surprising how difficult it is to demonstrate spatial memory empirically. We present a cognitive analysis of movements of several wolves (Canis lupus) in Finland during a summer period of intensive hunting and den-centered pup-rearing. We tracked several wolves in the field by visiting nearly all GPS locations outside the den, allowing us to identify the species, location and timing of ne…
New Glass Capillary Gas-Chromatographic Methods for Metabolites in Urine and Serum
1981
The analytical system suggested in this paper is a further development of pre-chromatographic methods and of column switching techniques described in previous papers1,2,3.In order to use modern gas-chromatographic techniques for the determination of metabolites in urine and serum quick and reliable pre-chromatographic methods for extraction, concentration and derivatization must be developed which give final (dosage) volumes of 5 to 10 μl with starting sample volumes of 0.1 ml of urine or 5 ml of serum as described by Dunges4.
Bidirectional Chemo-Switching of Spin State in a Microporous Framework
2009
The ins and outs of spin: Using the microporous coordination polymer {Fe(pz)[Pt(CN)(4)]} (1, pz=pyrazine), incorporating spin-crossover subunits, two-directional magnetic chemo-switching is achieved at room temperature. In situ magnetic measurements following guest vapor injection show that most guest molecules transform 1 from the low-spin (LS) state to the high-spin (HS) state, whereas CS(2) uniquely causes the reverse HS-to-LS transition.

Climate variability, innovation and firm performance: evidence from the European agricultural sector
2021
Abstract It is generally accepted that adaptation to climate variability requires a technological advancement strategy. However, the innovation process has received little explicit consideration in this framework. We employ a panel endogenous switching regression model to explore whether and to what extent climate variability affects firm performance through the ability to induce the development of adaptation innovations in key resource-based sectors in Europe during the period 2007–2017. Our findings confirm that the knowledge generation process at the heart of climate change adaptation technologies enhances firm performance, especially for firms in the aquaculture and fishing sub-sectors …
