Excitation of different chromium centres by synchrotron radiation in MgO:Cr single crystals

2015

The excitation spectra for the emissions of chromium-containing centres have been measured at 10 K using synchrotron radiation of 4–32 eV in MgO single crystals with different content of Cr$^{3+}$ (5–850 ppm) and Ca$^{2+}$ impurity ions. Both virgin crystals and the samples preliminarily irradiated with x-rays at 295 K have been studied. The role of complex chromium centres containing two Cr$^{3+}$ and a cation vacancy (sometimes nearby a Ca$^{2+}$ ion) on the luminescence processes and the transformation/creation of structural defects has been analysed. Such anharmonic complex centres could serve as the seeds for the creation of 3D defects that facilitate the cracking and brittle destructi…

Micrometer-resolution reconstruction and analysis of whole mouse brain vasculature by synchrotron-based phase-contrast tomographic microscopy

2021

AbstractNervous tissue metabolism is mainly supported by the dense thread of blood vessels which mainly provides fast supplies of oxygen and glucose. Recently, the supplying role of the brain vascular system has been examined in major neurological conditions such as the Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. However, to date, fast and reliable methods for the fine level microstructural extraction of whole brain vascular systems are still unavailable. We present a methodological framework suitable for reconstruction of the whole mouse brain cerebral microvasculature by X-ray tomography with the unprecedented pixel size of 0.65 μm. Our measurements suggest that the resolving power of the techn…

Luminescence of nano- and macrosized LaPO4:Ce,Tb excited by synchrotron radiation

2011

Abstract Comparing the luminescence properties of nanosized and macroscopic LaPO4:Ce,Tb powders are performed in wide spectral range using synchrotron radiation. In the present study, LaPO4:Ce,Tb nanopowder was produced by means of a microwave-induced synthesis in ionic liquids, whereas the bulk sample represents a commercial lamp phosphor. Emission and excitation of both, Ce3+ and Tb3+ luminescence, is observed to be different when comparing bulk and nanosized LaPO4:Ce,Tb. In particular, it was shown that the fine structure of the Ce3+ as well as the Tb3+ related emission is poorly resolved for the nanomaterial. It is suggested that the nanoparticles surface plays a key role regarding the …

Electronic excitations in ZnWO4 and ZnxNi1−x WO4 (x = 0.1 − 0.9) using VUV synchrotron radiation

2011

The photoluminescence spectra and luminescence excitation spectra of pure microcrystalline and nano-sized ZnWO4 as well as the Zn x Ni1−x WO4 solid solutions were studied using vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron radiation. The samples were also characterized by x-ray powder diffraction. We found that: (i) the shape of the photoluminescence band at 2.5 eV, being due to radiative electron transitions within the [WO6]6− anions, becomes modulated by the optical absorption of Ni2+ ions in the Zn x Ni1−x WO4 solid solutions; and (ii) no significant change in the excitation spectra of Zn0.9Ni0.1WO4 is observed compared to pure ZnWO4. At the same time, a shift of the excitonic bands to smaller en…

Generation and excitation of point defects in silica by synchrotron radiation above the absorption edge

2010

We report photoluminescence measurements carried out on amorphous SiO{sub 2} upon excitation by synchrotron light. Exposure of the as-grown material to above-edge light at low temperature induces the formation of nonbridging oxygen hole centers (NBOHC), localized in a thin layer below the surface limited by the penetration depth (tens of nm) of impinging light. After concluding the exposure to 11 eV light, stable defects are revealed by observing their characteristic 1.9 eV photoemission band excited at 4. 8eV. The local concentration of induced defects, supposedly formed by nonradiative decay of excitons, is very high (close to approx10{sup 21} cm{sup -3}) and independent of the previous h…

Characterization of the ESR response of alanine dosimeters to low-energy Cu-target X-tube photons

2017

Abstract This article describes Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) response measurements of Kodak BioMax alanine films exposed to low-energy X-rays from a Cu-target tube operating at 20 kV. Commercial alanine detectors were used to ensure maximum reproducibility of the results, while the choice of a film was due the low penetration of the soft X-rays. X-ray energy spectra and fluences were determined with an innovative digital semiconductor detector system. These data were used to quantify the irradiation of the alanine films in terms of absorbed dose to water. The alanine films were found to present a stable response, highly linear with dose. To our knowledge, these data have not been previousl…

SAXS/WAXS study of the annealing process in quenched samples of isotactic poly(propylene)

1999

The structural rearrangement in samples of quenched isotactic poly(propylene) (iPP) submitted to different annealing treatments has been studied using simultaneous small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) at the synchrotron radiation source of DESY, Hamburg. From a quantitative analysis of the WAXS profiles the values of the α-monoclinic, mesomorphic, and amorphous mass fractions coexisting in the material were determined. It is demonstrated that the SAXS patterns were characterized by two different long-period values that are attributed to α- and mesomorphic periodicity, respectively. The related α- and mesomorphic volume phase fractions, calculated from the analysis of the SAXS …

Preparation and characterization of Pd2Sn nanoparticles

2007

We report a non-aqueous solution preparation of Pd{sub 2}Sn nanoparticles with sizes near 20 nm. The intermetallic compound with the Co{sub 2}Si structure has been characterized using transmission electron microscopy, Rietveld refinement of synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, and real-space pair distribution function analysis of high-energy synchrotron X-ray scattering. We also present a description of the electronic structure of this covalent intermetallic using density functional calculations of the electronic structure.

Structural defects in Hg1−xCdxI2 layers grown on CdTe substrates by vapor phase epitaxy

1997

Hg1−xCdxI2 20–25-μm-thick layers with a uniform composition in the range of x = 0.1–0.2 were grown on CdTe substrates by vapor phase epitaxy (VPE). The growth was carried out using an α-HgI2 polycrystalline source at 200 °C and in the time range of 30–100 h. The layers were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high resolution synchrotron x-ray topography (SXRT). The SEM and SXRT images of Hg1−xCdxI2 VPE layers allow one to identify the defects affecting the layer structure. The two main types of structural defects in the layers are subgrain boundaries and densely spaced striations similar to those referred generally to as vapor grown HgI2 bulk crystals. The effect of the growth…
