Cytoplasmic 5′-3′ exonuclease Xrn1p is also a genome-wide transcription factor in yeast
2014
The 5′ to 3′ exoribonuclease Xrn1 is a large protein involved in cytoplasmatic mRNA degradation as a critical component of the major decaysome. Its deletion in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is not lethal, but it has multiple physiological effects. In a previous study, our group showed that deletion of all tested components of the yeast major decaysome, including XRN1, results in a decrease in the synthetic rate and an increase in half-life of most mRNAs in a compensatory manner. Furthermore, the same study showed that the all tested decaysome components are also nuclear proteins that bind to the 5′ region of a number of genes. In the present work, we show that disruption of Xrn1 activi…
Growth and Electrochemical Performance of Lead and Lead Oxide Nanowire Arrays as Electrodes for Lead-Acid Batteries
2013
n this work, we present the growth and electrochemical performance of nanostructured lead and lead oxide electrodes for lead-acid batteries. The electrodes were obtained by template electrodeposition in polycarbonate membranes, acting as template. Electrochemical tests were conducted at constant current in 5M aqueous solution of sulphuric acid, after assembling nanostructured lead and lead oxide electrodes in a zero-gap configuration using a commercially available separator. The main advantages of these electrodes are the high specific energy and power density, and the wide surface area, about 70 times higher than the geometrical one. These features allowed high discharge rates, up to 20C. …
One-dimensional nanostructures of lead and lead dioxide for application in lead-acid batteries
2010
Fabrication of Pb and PbO2 nanostructures was undertaken with the aim of building low cost lead acid micro-batteries with high performance. Despite environmental problems and the relatively low specific energy in comparison with other galvanic generators, lead acid batteries are still extensively used in the field of energy accumulation, owing to a well known and reliable technology. Thus, it is of high technological interest to develop procedures for fabricating these devices at a micrometer scale or less. PbO2 nanowires were grown in different electrochemical deposition conditions leading to pure -PbO2, pure -PbO2 and mixture [1-2]. Several parameters, like temperature, electrolyte…
Perceptions of learning and teaching human movement in physiotherapy : A systematic review and metasynthesis of qualitative studies
2023
Purpose: Human movement is essential for health and well-being. Understanding human movement is pivotal in physiotherapy, but also an important element of physiotherapy education. This review identified, critically appraised, and synthesized the available evidence on learning and teaching human movement in physiotherapy as perceived by students, therapists, and instructors. Methods: The databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, ERIC, PsycINFO, MEDIC and FINNA, were searched. The search was conducted in March/April 2020 and updated in March 2022. The systematic review followed the JBI methodology for systematic reviews of qualitative evidence and was conducted in accordance with an a priori protocol. Resul…
STIMULATING THE STUDENTS’ CREATIVITY IN THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE CLASS
2010
Throughout one’s life time each individual is required to find solutions to different problems by carrying out new operations, by combining the data and knowledge available, or by joining together disparate pieces of information. The students’ creative potential must be formed through teaching techniques that stimulate their resourcefulness: the essay, the scientific paper, the research project and the portfolio, which can be used as useful complementary evaluation methods as well.
Evidence of autoinduction heterogeneity via expression of the agr system of listeria monocytogenes at the single-cell level
2011
ABSTRACT To investigate if the primary function of the Agr system of Listeria monocytogenes is to monitor cell density, we followed Agr expression in batch cultures, in which the autoinducer concentration was uniform, and in biofilms. Expression was heterogeneous, suggesting that the primary function of Agr is not to monitor population density.

Metabolic plasticity of mixotrophic algae is key for their persistence in browning environments
2022
Light availability is the main regulator of primary production, shaping photosynthetic communities and their production of ecologically important biomolecules. In freshwater ecosystems, increasing dissolved organic carbon concentrations, commonly known as browning, leads to lower light availability and the proliferation of mixotrophic phytoplankton. Here, a mixotrophic algal species (Cryptomonas sp.) was grown under five increasing dissolved organic carbon concentrations to uncover the plastic responses behind the success of mixotrophs in browning environments and their effect in the availability of nutritionally important biomolecules. In addition to the browning treatments, phototrophic, …
Macroalgal responses to ocean acidification depend on nutrient and light levels
2015
Ocean acidification may benefit algae that are able to capitalize on increased carbon availability for photosynthesis, but it is expected to have adverse effects on calcified algae through dissolution. Shifts in dominance between primary producers will have knock-on effects on marine ecosystems and will likely vary regionally, depending on factors such as irradiance (light vs. shade) and nutrient levels (oligotrophic vs. eutrophic). Thus experiments are needed to evaluate interactive effects of combined stressors in the field. In this study, we investigated the physiological responses of macroalgae near a CO2 seep in oligotrophic waters off Vulcano (Italy). The algae were incubated in situ …
The role of manikins in nursing students' learning: A systematic review and thematic metasynthesis
2021
Abstract Objectives To summarise and synthesise findings from qualitative primary research studies of nursing students' experiences from educational activities using manikins to gain a deeper understanding of the role these manikins play in the students' learning. Design and data sources A systematic review and thematic metasynthesis were conducted. Cinahl+, Ovid Medline, ERIC and Embase were searched systematically. Review methods Sandelowski and Barroso's framework guided the review process. A comprehensive search to identify qualitative studies of nursing students' experiences from learning with manikins was performed in January 2019 and updated in April 2020. Study selection was guided …
