Asymmetric One-Pot Synthesis of (3R,3aS,6aR)-Hexahydrofuro[2,3-b]furan-3-ol: A Key Component of Current HIV Protease Inhibitors
2017
A concise and efficient synthesis of (3R,3aS,6aR)-hexahydrofuro[2,3-b]furan-3-ol, a key building block for several clinical and experimental HIV protease inhibitors including the highly important drug darunavir, was achieved via a one-pot procedure using furan and Cbz-protected glycol aldehyde as starting materials. A [2+2]-photocycloaddition between both reactants which can be prepared from wood-based starting materials according to the principles of xylochemistry, followed by hydrogenation and lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution afforded the target compound in high yield and up to 99% ee.
The Quest for Mononuclear Gold(II) and Its Potential Role in Photocatalysis and Drug Action.
2017
The chemistry of gold strongly focuses on the ubiquitous oxidation states +I and +III. The intermediate oxidation state +II is generally avoided in mononuclear gold species. In recent years, gold(II) has been increasingly suggested as a key intermediate in artificial photosynthesis systems, with gold(III) moieties acting as electron acceptors, as well as in gold-catalyzed photoredox catalysis and radical chemistry. This Minireview provides a concise summary of confirmed and characterized mononuclear open-shell gold(II) complexes. Recent findings on structural motifs and reactivity patterns will be discussed. Exciting developments in the fields of photosynthesis, photocatalysis, and potentia…
Novel Terphenyls and 3,5-Diaryl Isoxazole Derivatives Endowed with Growth Supporting and Antiapoptotic Properties
2008
A new study on terphenyl and diaryl-isoxazole and -isoxazoline derivatives, maintaining a common 3-adamantyl-4-hydroxyphenyl moiety, has been conducted to find compounds with growth supporting and antiapoptotic properties. Unexpectedly, diphenyisoxazole derivatives bearing a nitro group replacing the carboxylic function have been found with the highest cell protective activity within the series, in complete and in serum-free conditions. Inhibition of apoptosis induced by daunorubicin has also been observed for the most active compound.
Comparison of the Biosynthesis of Cellulose in vitro and in vivo in Cotton Bolls
1966
THE work of Hassid et al.1–3 on the cell-free synthesis of cellulose with an enzyme system isolated from mung bean seedlings and young cotton bolls has shown that the enzyme is apparently unable to distinguish guanosine diphosphate-D-glucose from guanosine diphosphate-D-mannose. Moreover, there was a notable decrease in the amount of the synthesized cellulose using enzymes from cotton bolls older than 15 days.
Imprinted Polymers with Memory for Small Molecules, Proteins, or Crystals

On the structure of passifloricin A: asymmetric synthesis of the delta-lactones of (2Z,5S,7R,9S,11S)- and (2Z,5R,7R,9S,11S)tetrahydroxyhexacos-2-enoi…
2003
Stereoselective syntheses of the delta-lactone of (2Z,5S,7R,9S,11S)-tetrahydroxyhexacos-2-enoic acid, the structure reported for passifloricin A, and of its (5R)-epimer are described. The creation of all stereogenic centers relied upon Brown's asymmetric allylation methodology. The lactone ring was created via ring-closing metathesis. The NMR data of both synthetic products, however, were different from those of the natural product. The published structure of passifloricin A is thus erroneous and will require further synthetic work to be unambiguously assigned. [structure: see text]

Deposition of very thin uniform indium sulfide layers over metallic nano-rods by the Spray-Ion Layer Gas Reaction method
2013
Abstract Very thin and uniform layers of indium sulfide were deposited on nickel nano-rods using the sequential and cyclical Spray-ILGAR® (Ion Layer Gas Reaction) technique. Substrates were fabricated by electrodeposition of Ni within the pores of polycarbonate membranes and subsequent chemical dissolution of the template. With respect to the depositions on flat substrates, experimental conditions were modified and optimized for the present geometry. Our results show that nano-rods up to a length of 10 μm were covered uniformly along their full length and with an almost constant film growth rate, thus allowing a good control of the coating thickness; the effect of the deposition temperature…
On the Unique Reactivity of Pd(OAc)2with Organic Azides: Expedient Synthesis of Nitriles and Imines
2013
Organic azides are well-established as versatile compounds that can act as precursors of different heterocycles (triazoles, triazolines, tetrazoles, etc.) or other nitrogen-containing compounds, such as amines (Staudinger reduction, Curtius rearrangement) or imines (Schmidt rearrangement, aza-Wittig reaction).1 Besides the ubiquitous copper-catalysed azide–alkyne cycloaddition reaction,2 two applications of organic azides have recently attracted the interest of the synthetic community: 1) the preparation of aziridines through the generation of nitrenes3 and 2) the synthesis of nitriles. We were particularly interested in the latter application, owing to the importance of the cyano group in …
Synthesis of (S)-(+)-sotalol and (R)-(−)-isoproterenol via a catalytic enantioselective Henry reaction
2010
Abstract A unified approach for the synthesis of ( S )-(+)-sotalol and ( R )-(−)-isoproterenol has been developed. The enantioselective Henry reaction of the appropriate aldehyde in the presence of a camphor-derived amino pyridine–Cu(II) complex was the key step of the synthesis. The reduction of the nitro group to give the corresponding amino alcohols followed by reductive alkylation of the amine provided the target products with high enantiomeric excesses.
