Reading and Spelling Development Across Languages Varying in Orthographic Consistency: Do Their Paths Cross?

We examined the cross‐lagged relations between reading and spelling in five alphabetic orthographies varying in consistency (English, French, Dutch, German, and Greek). Nine hundred and forty‐one children were followed from Grade 1 to Grade 2 and were tested on word and pseudoword reading fluency and on spelling to dictation. Results indicated that the relations across languages were unidirectional: Earlier reading predicted subsequent spelling. However, we also found significant differences between languages in the strength of the effects of earlier reading on subsequent spelling. AbstractThis article is concerned with the role of language(s) in education from the viewpoint of secondary school subject teachers in Finland at the time of transition to a new curriculum. The curriculum highlights the role of language throughout education and makes reference to changes in society that foreground multilingualism. Seven mainstream and CLIL content teachers of different subjects were interviewed and employing qualitative content analysis, the data were scrutinised under four language-related themes: multilingualism, multiliteracy, subject-specific language, and the role of language in knowledge construction. This article focuses on a young teacher-researcher’s beliefs about language and language skills. The research is motivated by findings of former studies according with which teachers’ beliefs are often relatively permanent and have a strong effect on their teaching and evaluation practices. The data consists of a teacher-researcher’s diary notes from storytelling events (n=19) in which storycrafting has been used with young primary school pupils. Arvioinnin työläys ja verkkopohjaisen lukemisen yleistyminen ovat digitaalisen arviointivälineen kehittämiseen johtaneita syitä. Niilo Mäki Instituutissa tutkimusperustaisesti kehitetty DigiLukiseula tehostaa arviointia toisella asteella, jolloin opiskelijoiden tukemiseen jää enemmän aikaa. Jo yli 200 000 suomalaislasta on saanut tukea lukemaan oppimiseen Ekapelistä, tutkimustietoon pohjautuvasta lukutaidon alkeiden teknologia-avusteisesta oppimisympäristöstä. Ajatus lukutaitoon johdattelevasta tietokonepelistä syntyi jo vuosia sitten Jyväskylän yliopistossa tehdyn dysleksiatutkimuksen yhteydessä. Vaikka Ekapelin ideana olikin alun perin tukea niitä, joille lukemaan oppiminen tuottaa vaikeuksia, peli on havaittu hyväksi kenelle tahansa aloittelevalle lukijalle. Tästä syntyi ajatus tehdä pelistä uusia kieliversioita myös niille lapsille, joille lukutaito on isojen ponnistusten takana esimerkiksi heikon opetuksen, vieraan kielen tai yhteisön epäileväisten asenteiden takia.
