Towards intelligibility and shared understanding : co-construction of meaning in ELF interaction
2011
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, mitä vuorovaikutuksen keinoja puhujat käyttävät ymmärrettävyyden ja yhteisen ymmärryksen saavuttamiseksi keskusteluissa, joissa englanti toimii lingua francana (ELF) eli yhteisenä kielenä eri kieli- ja kulttuuritaustaisten puhujien kesken. Tutkielman tavoitetta lähestytään etsimällä vastauksia seuraaviin kysymyksiin: 1) Miten ELF-puhujat neuvottelevat ja luovat yhdessä merkityksiä sanoille vuorovaikutuksen aikana?, 2) Kuinka ymmärtämiseen (tai kuulemiseen) liittyvät ongelmat ratkaistaan keskustelussa? ja 3) Millä tavoin luovuutta hyödynnetään merkitysneuvotteluissa? Tutkimuksen metodina käytetään keskustelunanalyysia ja teoreettinen viitekehys muodostu…

No me banco la gente así. Un estudio comparativo del uso de palabras coloquiales y malsonantes en conversaciones informales en tres comunidades de ha…
2019
The present article aims at describing and comparing the use of slang words and swearwords in teenage talk from three different Spanish speaking communities. The analysis builds on spontaneous teenage conversations from the corpus of teenage language Corpus Oral de Lenguaje Adolescente (COLA). This corpus contains informal conversations from Madrid, Buenos Aires and Santiago de Chile; and for this study one conversation from each city has been selected. The aim of the analysis is twofold, in the first place to describe and compare the slang words and swearwords registered in the three conversations, and secondly to study the pragmatic functions of these words. The analysis of the slang word…
3 ′-5 ′ crosstalk contributes to transcriptional bursting
2019
Abstract Background Transcription in mammalian cells is a complex stochastic process involving shuttling of polymerase between genes and phase-separated liquid condensates. It occurs in bursts, which results in vastly different numbers of an mRNA species in isogenic cell populations. Several factors contributing to transcriptional bursting have been identified, usually classified as intrinsic, in other words local to single genes, or extrinsic, relating to the macroscopic state of the cell. However, some possible contributors have not been explored yet. Here, we focus on processes at the 3 ′ and 5 ′ ends of a gene that enable reinitiation of transcription upon termination. On developing adaptive vocabulary learning game for children with an early language delay
2018
Vocabulary replenishment is an ordinary child development process. Deviations in this process can significantly affect the further progress and perception of the educational material in the school. A hypothesis was proposed that the similarity of words on various factors can influence the child's understanding. To test this hypothesis in this work, we propose the development of AdapTalk game for children. This game is concentrated on learning words, in the context of animals. The game will create the basis for further testing the influence of the semantic similarity of words for the child. This work describes the development background, the basic principles of calculating the semantic simil…
Xrn1 influence on gene transcription results from the combination of general effects on elongating RNA pol II and gene-specific chromatin configurati…
2020
mRNA homoeostasis is favoured by crosstalk between transcription and degradation machineries. Both the Ccr4-Not and the Xrn1-decaysome complexes have been described to influence transcription. While Ccr4-Not has been shown to directly stimulate transcription elongation, the information available on how Xrn1 influences transcription is scarce and contradictory. In this study we have addressed this issue by mapping RNA polymerase II (RNA pol II) at high resolution, using CRAC and BioGRO-seq techniques in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We found significant effects of Xrn1 perturbation on RNA pol II profiles across the genome. RNA pol II profiles at 5ʹ exhibited significant alterations that were com…
Recognising Articulated Reasoning in Students' Argumentative Talk in Mathematics Lessons
2017
Previous studies have reported difficulties in analysing students’ argumentation. Especially the warrant, which connects data with claims, is found to be problematic to recognise. Weexamine how specific criteria for different forms of reasoning could decrease this difficulty. Instead of identifying warrants, we recognise whether students’ argumentation contains explicitly stated reasoning. We have developed an analysis method for recognising reasoning in argumentative talk. We collected video data from two mathematics lessons where students had to state claims about a mathematical situation and build convincing justification for their claims. The focus of analysis is in how the students art…
Extracellular vesicles in the human maternal-embryo crosstalk during the preconception period
2020
Nutritional self-care among a group of older home-living people in rural Southern Norway
2015
Bjørg Dale, Ulrika SöderhamnCentre for Caring Research – Southern Norway, Faculty of Health and Sport Sciences, University of Agder, Grimstad, NorwayBackground: Older home-living people are an at-risk group for undernutrition, particularly those who are living alone. Lack of knowledge about healthy dietary habits, altered taste sensation, and declined health status are shown to be some of the factors related to undernutrition. The aims of this study were to explore how a small group of older people in Southern Norway perceived their nutritional self-care.Methods: An exploratory qualitative approach, combined with a simple self-report questionnaire, was used. Fi…
