Discourse Matters : Localness as a Source of Authenticity in Craft Businesses in Peripheral Minority Language Sites

2015

Localness’ has gained currency as a source of authenticity and distinction in the niche marketing of the globalised new economy. This has created opportunities for peripheral minority language sites to capitalise on their geographically and culturally peripheral location, and has lifted tourism and handicraft industries to key sites of socio-economic development in these regions. Although ‘localness’ may seem like a ready source of economic gain in cultural production in such sites, it does not come without consequences for the cultural entrepreneurs. This paper explores what is at stake for cultural entrepreneurs in the promotion of localness as a source of authenticity. The study focuses …

Constructions, Claims, Resonance, Reflexivity: Language and Market Categorization

2020

doi: 10.1177/2631787720968561 Studies on market categorization exhibit substantial agreement that language plays a central role in articulating and constructing meanings among market participants and crafting consensus to produce a collective of interacting market actors. The purpose of this paper is to take stock of the growing body of research on language and market categories. This review has two aims. We begin by identifying how scholars have applied a variety of language constructs in category research, providing an understanding of the differences between these constructs and elaborating their uses and functions in the studies on market categorization. The second part of the review th…

Classifying economics for the common good : a note on the links between sustainable development goals and JEL codes

2021

Purpose This brief note sheds light on the links between Journal of Economic Literature (JEL) codes and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. Design/methodology/approach Three alternative methods based on keyword overlap to establish links between SDGs and JEL codes are presented. Findings These simple linkages illustrate that the themes of SDGs have corresponding closely related JEL classification codes. Research limitations/implications The mappings presented in this note are based on simple keyword overlap and are therefore necessarily imperfect and incomplete. There is plenty of room for further development. Practical implications Despite the demonstrated possi…

Religious Revival Movements and the Development of the Twentieth-century Welfare-state in Finland

2019

The Lutheran state church had a monopoly status in Finland for centuries. But its dominance slowly weakened as pietistic revival movements spread in Finland in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These movements had religious purposes, but they were also forerunners of profound social and economic changes in Finland in the twentieth century. In challenging the role of the state church, they challenged national unity, spread Western cultural values, emphasized individual rights, and improved the status of women in society. Men of political eminence, such as Anders Chydenius, introduced these influences on Finnish economic life. Overall, the revival movements helped to pave the way for t…
