The text examines the relocation of ceded Vyborg’s administrative, social and cultural institutions in the rest of Finland. The heritage of the city was fragmented over a large area because the remaining part of Karelia did not have a city large enough to accommodate the Vyborgian facilities. In this respect, the competition between the fairly strong regional centres slowed down the urban development of the whole of Eastern Finland. peerReviewed

This article analyses how the role of sportsmen as defenders of the country was seen during the Winter War (1939–1940) and how their performance as soldiers was evaluated by sports experts. The image of the Finnish sportsman (cf. Paavo Nurmi) as physically and mentally particularly fit type of soldier was disseminated by the Finnish sports journal Suomen Urheilulehti and the characteristics of the Finnish sportsmen as soldiers were compared with the ‘average’ soldiers and the attacking Russians, ‘Ruskies’, the Red Army soldiers. ‘Ruskie’, in Finnish ryssä, is a term of abuse to designate Alterity that could never be domesticated, hateful and fearful Otherness beyond history for the Finn. Historiaa opiskellaan peruskoulussa viidenneltä luokalta alkaen. Opetussuunnitelman perusteissa määritetään historian opiskelun tavoitteet ja sisällöt, joita opettajien tulisi työssään noudattaa. Talvisota ilmiönä kuuluu kahdeksannen luokan historian sisältöihin ja tutkimuksessa olen tutkinut historian opetusta talvisodan näkökulmasta. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on ollut selvittää, miten historian opettajat opettavat talvisota aiheen oppilailleen ja millaisia asioita oppilaat ovat saamansa opetuksen perusteella oppineet. The War Heroine in the Finnish Organization : Lotta Svärd

This paper focuses on a Finnish women’s paramilitary organization called ‘Lotta Svärd’ in a wartime context, from 1939 to 1944. During the Second World War, thousands of members of the organization served as volunteers with the Finnish Army. The primary data for this study consist of the organization’s magazine, Lotta Svärd, as well as archival documents stored in the Finnish War Document Archives. This study seeks to explore what kind of war heroine was constructed in Lotta Svärd. We found four representations of the heroine: Mother, Soldier, Body and Holy Sacrifice. Pro gradu –tutkielmani käsittelee sotamuistoja ja niiden muuntumista fiktiivisiksi teksteiksi – proosaksi tai lyriikaksi. Kollektiivisen muistin merkitys on keskeinen, kun kokonaista kansaa koskettavasta tapahtumasta, kuten sodasta, luodaan fiktiota. Se, miten saa muistaa ja mitä saa muistaa, vaihtelee yhteiskunnallisen tilanteen mukaan. Tämä vaikuttaa myös kirjallisuuteen ja sen avaamiin näkökulmiin sodasta. Kollektiivisen muistin tehtävä on säilyttää sekä yksilön että yhteisön identiteetti ehjänä.
