A new type of autosomal recessive spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda
2004
Repeated occurrence of a hitherto unrecognized form of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia tarda (SED tarda) has been studied in two independent families. Because parental consanguinity was also present in one family, autosomal recessive inheritance is proposed. The onset was in late childhood. The slowly evolving disorder shared several features of the already known types of SED tarda. The radiographic abnormalities were limited to the spine and proximal femora. The patients' hands were normal. The entity described is set apart not only from the X-linked and autosomal-dominant forms of SED tarda but also from the already delineated autosomal recessive types by significant clinical and radiographi…
Halloysite Nanotubes: Interfacial Properties and Applications in Cultural Heritage
2020
The peculiar surfaces of halloysite nanotubes and their biocompatibility are attracting the interest of researchers based on the wide range of attainable applications. The large aspect ratio of this nanotubular material ensures promising properties as a reinforcing agent in polymeric matrixes, such as cellulose and its derivatives, that entail strengthening due to, for instance, aging-induced degradation. The halloysite cavity has a suitable size for hosting a large variety of active species such as deacidifying (calcium hydroxide) and flame retardant agents (fluorinated surfactants) for a controlled and sustained release relevant to the conservation of cultural heritage. Additionally, anio…
Influence of orthophosphate ions on the dissolution of tricalcium silicate
2008
International audience; Tricalcium silicate dissolution in the presence of orthophosphate ions was monitored by measuring the concentrations of calcium and silicate ions in dilute suspensions using a special dissolution cell coupled to an optical emission spectrometer. Results show that increasing adsorption of orthophosphate ions slows down the dissolution of Ca3SiO5 and that a calcium-phosphate precipitate may form at certain orthophosphate concentrations. These observations are correlated with results of calorimetric experiments carried out during the hydration of silica-rich cement pastes in the presence of the same salts.
Thermal stability and flammability of polyolefin/halloysite nanotubes composites
2015
The angelman syndrome: A brief review
2017
Angelman's Syndrome (AS) was described for the first time by Harry Angelman in the 1960s, based on obervation of three child patients with similar physical and behavioral features such as severe intellectual impairment, lack of language, motor disorders and happy behaviour. Many years later the typical patients' features were identified as linked to genetic abnormalities mainly characterized by neurological symptoms. Life expectancy is good although the symptoms tend to be stable and severe.
Emerging contaminants related to the occurrence of forest fires in the Spanish Mediterranean
2017
Forest fires can be a source of contamination because, among others, of the use of chemicals to their extinction (flame retardants, FRs), or by the production of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) derived from high temperature alteration of organic matter. Up to our knowledge, this study is the first to assess the direct (PAHs 16 on the USA EPA's priority list), and indirect [tri- to hepta- brominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs)] contamination related to forest fires. The abundance and distribution of these contaminants were monitored on two Mediterranean hillslopes, one burned and one unburned, near Azuébar (S…
Occurrence of Edwardsiella tarda in wild European eels Anguilla anguilla from Mediterranean Spain
2007
Pure cultures of Edwarsiella tarda were isolated from body ulcers and internal organs of wild European eels caught in a Mediterranean freshwater coastal lagoon (Albufera Lake, Valencia, Spain) over a 1 yr period. Overall, the E. tarda isolation rate from wild eels was 9%, but this increased to 22.8% in diseased individuals. All 22 E. tarda isolates belonged to the 'wild-type' biogroup of the species and were virulent for eels (lethal dose that kills 50% of exposed individuals [LD50 dose]: 10(4.85) to 10(6.83) CFU ind.(-1)), and therefore represented the aetiological agent of the haemorrhagic disease observed in wild European eels. The E. tarda isolates and E. tarda CECT 894T type strain wer…
Vescovi, Sicilia, Mediterraneo nella tarda antichità.
2012
Pathology of Rotavirus-driven Multiple Organ Failure in a 16-month-old Boy
2019
International audience; Autopsy investigation of a fatal case of rotavirus severe acute gastroenteritis and multiple organ failure in a 16-month boy with previous intrauterine growth retardation showed colocalization of nonstructural and structural rotavirus proteins within viroplasms in nephrons. This case brings new insights into extraintestinal rotavirus infection and new clues to its abilities to bind to human histo-blood group antigens.
Monitoring the Starvation–Survival Response of Edwardsiella piscicida and E. tarda in Freshwater Microcosms, at Various Temperatures
2022
Edwardsiella piscicida is an important fish pathogen responsible for economic losses in global aquaculture, and E. tarda is also a human zoonotic pathogen. In this study, the survival of E. piscicida and E. tarda strains kept in filtered and sterilized lake water microcosms was investigated during a 20-week period at 7 °C, 15 °C and 25 °C, as well as its pathogenicity retention during a starvation period. E. tarda V43.2 stayed culturable for 6 weeks at 7 °C, 9 weeks at 25 °C and 12 weeks at 15 °C. Both E. piscicida strains (V12.1 and V57.2) stayed culturable even longer, for at least 12 weeks at 7 °C, 15 °C and 25 °C under the same starvation conditions. …
