Technological acceleration is intensifying job demands (IJDs), referring to work intensification, intensified job- and career-related planning and decision-making demands, and intensified learning demands at work. Abstract Firms will invest in green energy technologies only if these investments have an economic pay-off. Based on unique firm-level data from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland, we find that the marginal effect of investments in green energy technologies on productivity is positive only for the 19% of firms with the highest energy costs. These results have major implications for companies and policy makers regarding the design of green energy policies and incentives.

How does the age structure of worker flows affect firm performance?

We develop a method for decomposing firm performance to impacts coming from the inflows and outflows of workers and apply it to study whether older workers are costly to firms. Our estimation equations are derived from a variant of the decomposition methods frequently used for measuring micro-level sources of industry productivity growth. By using comprehensive linked employer–employee data, we study the productivity and wage effects, and hence the profitability effects, of the hiring and separation of younger and older workers. Korona-ajan opetus on vaatinut kouluilta, oppilailta ja vanhemmilta monenlaista sopeutumista. Rehtorit ja opettajat tekivät ympäripyöreää päivää huolehtiakseen oppilaista. Oppilaat kaipasivat kouluyhteisöään ja vanhemmat ohjausta lasten koulunkäynnin tukemisessa.
