Does the law matter? An empirical study on the accessibility of Finnish higher education institutions’ web pages

2022

AbstractInformation and communication technology (ICT) has made higher education available to many students in a new way. The role of online learning in higher education institutions (HEIs) has grown to an unprecedented scale due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The diversity of higher education students has increased, and accessible solutions are needed. New European and national regulations support these trends. The research reported in this paper was conducted in Finland, which is one of the leading European countries in terms of high technology and digitalisation. The aim of this research is to explore the accessibility of all Finnish HEIs’ (N = 38) landing pages based on Web Content Accessibi…

Does training in syllable recognition improve reading speed? A computer-based trial with poor readers from second and third grade.

2013

Repeated reading of infrequent syllables has been shown to increase reading speed at the word level in a transparent orthography. This study confirms these results with a computer-based training method and extends them by comparing the training effects of short syllables and long frequent and infrequent syllables, controlling for rapid automatized naming. Our results, based on a sample of 150 poor readers of Finnish, showed clear gains in reading speed regarding all trained syllables, but a transfer effect to the word level was evident only in the case of long infrequent syllables. Rapid automatized naming was associated with initial reading speed, but not with the training effect. peerRevi…

Sub- to Super-Poissonian crossover of current noise in helical edge states coupled to a spin impurity in a magnetic field

2021

Edge states of two-dimensional topological insulators are helical and single-particle backscattering is prohibited by time-reversal symmetry. In this work, we show that an isotropic exchange coupling of helical edge states (HES) to a spin 1/2 impurity subjected to a magnetic field results in characteristic backscattering current noise (BCN) as a function of bias voltage and tilt angle between the direction of the magnetic field and the quantization axis of the HES. In particular, we find transitions from sub-Poissonian (antibunching) to super-Poissonian (bunching) behavior as a direct consequence of the helicity of the edge state electrons. We use the method of full counting statistics with…

Flat-band superconductivity in periodically strained graphene : mean-field and Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless transition

2020

In the search of high-temperature superconductivity one option is to focus on increasing the density of electronic states. Here we study both the normal and s-wave superconducting state properties of periodically strained graphene, which exhibits approximate flat bands with a high density of states, with the flatness tunable by the strain profile. We generalize earlier results regarding a one-dimensional harmonic strain to arbitrary periodic strain fields, and further extend the results by calculating the superfluid weight and the Berezinskii–Kosterlitz–Thouless (BKT) transition temperature T BKT to determine the true transition point. By numerically solving the self-consistency equation, w…

Skyrmion formation due to unconventional magnetic modes in anisotropic multiband superconductors

2019

Multiband superconductors have a sufficient number of degrees of freedom to allow topological excitations characterized by skyrmionic topological invariants. In the most common, clean s -wave multiband systems, the interband Josephson and magnetic couplings favor composite vortex solutions, without a skyrmionic topological charge. It was discussed recently that certain kinds of anisotropies lead to hybridization of the interband phase difference (Leggett) mode with magnetic modes, dramatically changing the hydromagnetostatics of the system. Here we report this effect for a range of parameters that substantially alter the nature of the topological excitations, leading to solutions characteri…

Factors mediating the psychological well-being of healthcare workers responding to global pandemics: A systematic review

2020

The worldwide outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and the likelihood of future pandemics has raised the attention to the effects of pandemics on the psychological well-being of individuals. Given their indispensable role in such situations, healthcare workers are at greater risk of mental health issues. This paper aimed to review the mediators of psychological well-being among healthcare workers responding to global pandemics. After registration on PROSPERO, a systematic review was performed in four databases. Following study selection (PRISMA guidelines), inclusion criteria and analysis methods were assessed. The quality of the included studies was assessed using the EPHPP criteri…

Patterns of Teachers’ Occupational Well-Being During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Relations to Experiences of Exhaustion, Recovery, and Interactional Style…

2021

This study examined profiles of teachers’ occupational well-being during the COVID-19 pandemic. The data were collected from 279 Finnish primary school teachers during the spring of 2020. Four groups of teachers were identified by using Latent Profile Analysis: 1) teachers with mediocre stress and work engagement (34.4%);2) teachers with mediocre stress and lowest work engagement (11.5%);3) teachers with highest stress and work engagement (26.5%);and 4) teachers with lowest stress and highest work engagement (27.6%). The findings indicated that teachers’ occupational well-being was individually constructed, and there was a diversity with ways how negative and positive aspects of occupationa…

DNA-molekyylin sähkönjohtavuusmittaukset

2012

DNA-molekyylien sähkönjohtavuus on askarruttanut tutkijoita jo usean vuosikymmenen ajan.

Shaping graphene with optical forging: from a single blister to complex 3D structures

2020

Properties of graphene, such as electrical conduction and rigidity can be tuned by introducing local strain or defects into its lattice. We used optical forging, a direct laser writing method, under an inert gas atmosphere, to produce complex 3D patterns of single layer graphene. We observed bulging of graphene out of the plane due to defect induced lattice expansion. By applying low peak fluences, we obtained a 3D-shaped graphene surface without either ablating it or deforming the underlying Si/SiO2 substrate. We used micromachining theory to estimate the single-pulse modification threshold fluence of graphene, which was 8.3 mJ cm−2, being an order of magnitude lower than the threshold for…
