German neuroendoscopy above the skull base
2009
Endoscopy plays an important part in current minimally invasive neurosurgery. The concepts, indications, and standards of current neuroendoscopy were developed in the beginning of the 1990s by several groups of neurosurgeons. Several factors contributed to its success and acceptance, including technical development, influence of other disciplines, and adaptation to neurosurgical requirements. This historical survey focuses on the period when this technique initially emerged, including the scientific discussions of each group as well as the arguments and reasons that led to present intraventricular neuroendoscopy. Interestingly, despite the almost independent development of neuroendoscopic s…
WWOX-related encephalopathies: delineation of the phenotypical spectrum and emerging genotype-phenotype correlation
2014
International audience; BACKGROUND:Homozygous mutations in WWOX were reported in eight individuals of two families with autosomal recessive spinocerebellar ataxia type 12 and in two siblings with infantile epileptic encephalopathy (IEE), including one who deceased prior to DNA sampling.METHODS:By combining array comparative genomic hybridisation, targeted Sanger sequencing and next generation sequencing, we identified five further patients from four families with IEE due to biallelic alterations of WWOX.RESULTS:We identified eight deleterious WWOX alleles consisting in four deletions, a four base-pair frameshifting deletion, one missense and two nonsense mutations. Genotype-phenotype correl…
Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of hemiplegic migraine
2020
Hemiplegic migraine (HM) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous condition with attacks of headache and motor weakness which may be associated with impaired consciousness, cerebellar ataxia and intellectual disability. Motor symptoms usually last <72 hours and are associated with visual or sensory manifestations, speech impairment or brainstem aura. HM can occur as a sporadic HM or familiar HM with an autosomal dominant mode of inheritance. Mutations in CACNA1A, ATP1A2 and SCN1A encoding proteins involved in ion transport are implicated. The pathophysiology of HM is close to the process of typical migraine with aura, but appearing with a lower threshold and more severity. We review…
Zīmola komunikācija dalīšanās ekonomikā: Taxify piemērs Latvijā
2017
Carotenoid-based colour of acanthocephalan cystacanths plays no role in host manipulation.
2009
Manipulation by parasites is a catchy concept that has been applied to a large range of phenotypic alterations brought about by parasites in their hosts. It has, for instance, been suggested that the carotenoid-based colour of acanthocephalan cystacanths is adaptive through increasing the conspicuousness of infected intermediate hosts and, hence, their vulnerability to appropriate final hosts such as fish predators. We revisited the evidence in favour of adaptive coloration of acanthocephalan parasites in relation to increased trophic transmission using the crustacean amphipodGammarus pulexand two species of acanthocephalans,Pomphorhynchus laevisandPolymorphus minutus. Both species show car…
Multidimensionality in host manipulation mimicked by serotonin injection.
2014
Manipulative parasites often alter the phenotype of their hosts along multiple dimensions. ‘Multidimensionality’ in host manipulation could consist in the simultaneous alteration of several physiological pathways independently of one another, or proceed from the disruption of some key physiological parameter, followed by a cascade of effects. We compared multidimensionality in ‘host manipulation’ between two closely related amphipods, Gammarus fossarum and Gammarus pulex, naturally and experimentally infected with Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala), respectively. To that end, we calculated in each host–parasite association the effect size of the difference between infected and uninfect…
Larval size in acanthocephalan parasites : Influence of intraspecific competition and effects on intermediate host behavioural changes
2012
Abstract Background Parasites often face a trade-off between exploitation of host resources and transmission probabilities to the next host. In helminths, larval growth, a major component of adult parasite fitness, is linked to exploitation of intermediate host resources and is influenced by the presence of co-infecting conspecifics. In manipulative parasites, larval growth strategy could also interact with their ability to alter intermediate host phenotype and influence parasite transmission. Methods We used experimental infections of Gammarus pulex by Pomphorhynchus laevis (Acanthocephala), to investigate larval size effects on host behavioural manipulation among different parasite sibshi…
P-Type Doping of 4H-SiC for Integrated Bipolar and Unipolar Devices
2015
International audience; P-type 4H-SiC layers formed by ion implantation need high temperature processes, which generate surface roughness, losing and incomplete activation of dopants. Due to dopant redistribution and channeling effect, it is difficult to predict the depth of the formed junctions. Vapor-Liquid-Solid (VLS) selective epitaxy is an alternative method to obtain locally highly doped p-type layers in the 1020 cm-3 range or more. The depth of this p-type layers or regions is accurately controlled by the initial Reactive-Ion-Etching (RIE) of the SiC. Lateral Junction Field Effect Transistor (JFET) devices are fabricated by integrating p-type layers created by Al ion implantation or …
