Teaching Language and Literature: A Question of Balance?
2015
Abstract Regarding the teaching of Catalan, four textbooks were created in the 1970s and 80s, which included a complete work of literature, with numerous grammar and lexical commentaries, and exercises about the literary text. The author who is the link between these books is the grammarian Albert Jane i Riera, a writer and linguist who has been a leading figure in Catalan culture as the editor of the children's magazine Cavall Fort . Our aim with this synchronic and diachronic study is to vindicate the importance of the educational proposals we have analysed, as well as the appropriateness and the need of teaching language and literature to regain and consolidate their mutually enriching r…

Synthesis and activity of phosphinic tripeptide inhibitors of cathepsin C
2004
Phosphinic tripeptide analogues Gly-Xaaψ[P(O)(OH)CH2]-Gly have been developed as inhibitors of cathepsin C (DPP I), a lysosomal, papain-like cysteine protease. The target compounds were synthesised by addition of methyl acrylate to the appropriate phosphinic acids followed by the N-terminus elongation using mixed anhydride procedure. The latter step has been demonstrated to be a suitable method for N-terminal extension of the phosphinic pseudopeptide analogues without requirement of hydroxyphosphinyl protection. The title compounds appeared to be moderate inhibitors of the cathepsin C. However, although designed as transition state analogues, they surprisingly exhibited noncompetitive mode …
Characterization of fusion from without induced by herpes simplex virus
1991
The process of fusion from without (FFWO) induced by herpes simplex virus (HSV) was analyzed by using various inhibitors and compared to fusion from within (FFWI). The fate of certain elements of the cytoskeleton after FFWO was also investigated. Our experiments demonstrate FFWO as a very suitable system for study of early virus-cell interactions. Zn++ ions proved inhibitory for penetration whilst pretreatment of cells with Ca++ ions before infection enhanced FFWO activity. Dissociation of penetration from the fusion process itself was possible by use of Zn++ ions, low pH-treatment and antiserum on the one hand and N-ethylmaleimide and cytochalasin D on the other. Penetration itself needs o…
Boundary value steady solutions of a class of hydrodynamic models for vehicular traffic flow
2003
This paper deals with the solution of a boundary value problem related to a steady nonuniform description of a class of traffic flow models. The models are obtained by the closure of the mass conservation equation with a phenomenological relation linking the local mass velocity to the local density. The analysis is addressed to define the proper framework toward the identification of the parameter characterizing the model. The last part of the paper develops a critical analysis also addressed to the design of new traffic flow models.
Autocatalytic cleavage of Clostridium difficile toxin B.
2007
Clostridium difficile, the causative agent of nosocomial antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and pseudomembranous colitis, possesses two main virulence factors: the large clostridial cytotoxins A and B. It has been proposed that toxin B is cleaved by a cytosolic factor of the eukaryotic target cell during its cellular uptake. Here we report that cleavage of not only toxin B, but also all other large clostridial cytotoxins, is an autocatalytic process dependent on host cytosolic inositolphosphate cofactors. A covalent inhibitor of aspartate proteases, 1,2-epoxy-3-(p-nitrophenoxy)propane, completely blocked toxin B function on cultured cells and was used to identify its catalytically active prote…
Essential oils of Salvia bracteata and Salvia rubifolia from Lebanon: Chemical composition, antimicrobial activity and inhibitory effect on human mel…
2009
Aim of the study: Salvia bracteata Banks et Sol. and Salvia rubifolia Boiss. are known in folk medicine of Lebanon for the treatment of microbial infections, cancer, urinary and pulmonary problems. In the present study the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of essential oils from aerial parts of Salvia bracteata and Salvia rubifolia collected in Lebanon were evaluated. The oils were also tested for their potential antiproliferative effects against M14 human melanoma cells. Material and methods: The oils were studied by GC and GC-MS and their antibacterial activity (MIC and MBC) was tested against ten bacteria species using the broth dilution method. The inhibitory effect on hum…
