Teacher orchestration of classroom interaction in science: exploring dialogic and authoritative passages in whole-class discussions

2019

Whereas science is fundamentally a result of a dialogic debate, the authoritative approach has been conceived of as a fundamental part of school science. Dialogic interactions encompass the mutual appreciation of different ideas manifested in teacher supportiveness toward students and, in authoritative interactions, the focus is more on the science’s or teacher’s point of view. Whereas dialogic and authoritative interactions have been viewed as oppositional in recent educational research, authoritative interactions could well be the seed for and give strength and meaning to dialogic interactions, and thus, to the overall dialogue. The focus in this study is on the interplay between authorit…

2019

When we talk with basic education´s teachers there is an impression in the case of learning Social Sciences, and Geography in particular that these sciences are not useful for the explanation of socio-environmental and daily problems. In this research, improvement proposals are sought so that students are motivated to learn about these problems. Based on two case studies such as flood risks (and their relationship with climate change) and the problems of the rural areas, the possibilities of combining motivation for learning close to personal emotions and with their own rigor have been explored of the conceptual explanation. To validate these results, quantitative and qualitative research t…

2018

The way a foreign language (L2) learner perceives his or her educational environment may affect their processes of L2 acquisition. Am I Irrelevant? Does the Finnish business community prefer native or non-native speaking English teachers?

2009

Språkmedvetenhet i småbarnspedagogiskt arbete – Finländska daghemspedagogers reflektioner

2019

Finnish Pre-Service Teachers’ Perceptions of Perceived Competence in Early Childhood Physical Education

2021

Early childhood education and care (ECEC) teachers have a central role in supporting young children’s physical activity (PA) and overall development in the early years. However, the value of early childhood education teacher training (ECETT) programmes is not widely understood. This study aimed to investigate pre-service teachers’ perceptions of perceived competence when (1) supporting a child’s PA, (2) teaching PE, and (3) observing and assessing a child’s motor skills and PA. These self-evaluations were compared with a range of individual, educational, and behavioural characteristics. Final-year Bachelor degree pre-service teachers (n = 274

Finnish and Greek early childhood teachers’ perspectives and practices in supporting children’s autonomy

2017

Kindergarten teachers from different cultural backgrounds attribute various meanings to children’s autonomy. There seems to be cultural differences in early childhood education curricula with regard to how a child’s autonomy is described and how it is supported. This qualitative study asks: how do teachers narrate their perspective and pedagogical support of children’s autonomy, and what kinds of similarities and differences in the pedagogy and practices can be found in Finnish and Greek early childhood education (ECEC) contexts? The data of this qualitative study consist of a semi-structured questionnaire of 14 kindergarten teachers and observations of their pedagogical practices in the da…

2010

Mathematical Modeling in SecondaryEducation: A User's Manual

2019

[EN] One of the main problems that arise when implementing a mathematical modeling task to the secondary classroom is the lack of a detailed description, from the didactic perspective, that helps and guides the in-service teachers in the implementation of this type of activity and that allows them to identify which are the learning objectives being pursued; if this kind of activities t within the oficial curriculum; the type of tasks that allow these objectives to be achieved; how to carry out their evaluation or what methodology to use. In this article we will address all these aspects from the perspective of a classroom experience, detailing each of the phases involved in the implementati…
