Game Definitions: A Wittgensteinian Approach

2014

Games have been defined and redefined many times over, and there seems to be no end to this continual process or any agreement about the definitions. This article argues that such an agreement is not necessary, and presents a Wittgensteinian approach to discussing game definitions. Instead of the common core approach used in most definitions, this article argues for an approach based on language-games. The common core approach is based on a limited number of shared core attributes, while the language-game approach is based on the idea of family resemblances. The language-game approach sees the cycle of redefinition as a hermeneutic circle that advances our understanding of games. This artic…

Professional mathematics teacher identity: analysis of reflective narratives from discourses and activities

2012

Published verson of an article in the journal: Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10857-012-9216-1 This article focuses on the methodological use of reflective narratives from discourses and activities of an experienced primary teacher as evidence of her professional identity. The teacher’s reflective narratives emerge from her participation in a 3-year developmental and research project, Learning Communities in Mathematics, conducted at the University of Agder (UiA) in Norway. As background for our study, we firstly present the teacher in action with her sixth-grade pupils in a mathematics lesson, and then analyse sele…

Reflecting through the designing: a brief analysis of the teacher’s planning process

2016

The aim of this work is to study the conditions in which teachers plan and execute educational actions in the classroom and to find out which difficulties they encountered during the development of the planned teaching action. The “concrete operations” that 15 teachers in the Palermo area had accomplished, were highlighted before, during and after every structured activity to promote the pupils’ oral expression. Specifically, the research, which is collocated in the case study, had the function of verifying forty descriptors. These were grouped in the five cardinal points of the ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), with a motivated group of teachers that …

Edukacja regionalna w wychowaniu przedszkolnym i szkole

2017

The considerations contained in this article focus on the significance of regional education in preschool and school education. Regional education is a relatively young pedagogical conception, which appeared in the literaturę at the beginning of the 1990s. It is inseparably connected with that of regionalism defined as ”a return to one’s own roots”. The assumptions behind regional education and its content are formulated on the basis of the core curriculum of comprehensive education at indrndual stages of teaching. It makes a vital element in the program of teaching native language, history, geography and other school subjects.

"Obsługa Wiedzy" w jednostkach szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce w latach 2005-2015

2018

Transformacji społecznej, prawnej i ekonomicznej w Polsce towarzyszą zmiany w przesłankach tworzenia i funkcjonowania jednostek szkolnictwa wyższego, wymuszając przejmowanie przez instytucje naukowe i kulturotwórcze cech ąuasi-przedsiębiorstw o charakterze korporacyjnym, opartych na regułach gry rynkowej. Analiza złożoności wewnętrznej struktury poszczególnych elementów systemu szkolnictwa wyższego wymaga jednocześnie uwzględnienia ich „uwikłania” w otoczeniu dalszym i bliższym, opartego na sytuacji polityczno-prawnej, demograficznej i finansowej. Celem artykułu jest próba analizy działania publicznych i niepublicznych jednostek szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce z punktu widzenia wybranych elem…

Oppilaiden kanssa vastuuta jakamassa : peruskoulun kahdeksannen luokan oppilaiden autonomian vahvistaminen englannin oppitunneilla samanaikaisopetuks…

2016

The aim of this ethnographic and autoethnographic research was to explore what kind of a learning culture existed in an 8th grade English class in a Finnish basic education school in the 2011-2012 academic year. The class was taught jointly by a subject teacher and a special education teacher. A teaching experiment was implemented with the support of co-teaching during which teachers aimed to strengthen students' learning autonomy: to support their active learning and help them act as responsible learners. The research data included participant observation notes, interviews of a subject teacher and students, and different kinds of documents produced by teachers and students during the imple…

2015

2019

The constant search for suitable teaching materials to achieve the linguistic skills provided by a language teaching course, finds in authentic documents an important instrument for teaching foreign languages. The scientific literature attesting to the effectiveness of the authentic material is wide and consolidated; indeed, a text conceived by a native for a native, and, therefore, not developed for the sole purpose of teaching a foreign language, is intrinsically carrying a cultural richness and a linguistic variety, which are rarely present in any didactic artifact. The authentic material therefore represents an opportunity to meet the fixed expressions that are part of the communicative…

Defining Role-Playing Games as Language-Games

2011

Role-playing games are a diverse phenomenon, ranging from digital games to live action role-playing. Finding a definition that suits them all is hard, but attempts have been many. All of the definitions emphasize some aspects of role-playing games like rules, the role of players or the story. Many definitions do not describe role-playing games as such, but the activity that is role-playing. This paper looks at one of the latest attempts to define role-playing games, by Hitchens and Drachen (2009), and shows some potential problems with it. As an answer to these problems another definition is proposed, consisting of a game world, participants, shared narrative power and interaction. This def…
