Modelling thermionic emission by using a two Level mechanical system
2008
The Boltzmann factor is at the basis of a great amount of thermodynamic and statistical physics, both classical and quantum. It describes the behaviour of natural systems that exchange energy with the environment. However, why does the expression have that specific form? The Feynman Lectures on Physics justifies it heuristically by referencing to the "exponential atmosphere" example. Thermodynamics textbooks usually give a more or less complete explanation that mainly involves a mathematical analysis, where it is hard to see the logic flow. Moreover, the necessary mathematics is not at the level of high school or college students' preparation. Here we present an experiment and a simulation …
Teaching networking: an interpersonal communication competence perspective
2015
Modern working life calls for competences that enable people to be creative, innovative and effective. Studies looking at contemporary enterprises and organisations such as businesses and schools have shown that many of the qualifications that graduating students would need, including informal learning (see Gielen, Hoeve & Nieuwenhuis 2003), innovativeness (e.g. Moolenaar & Sleegers 2010; Obstfeld 2005) and creativity (e.g. Burt 2004; Perry-Smith & Shalley 2003), are associated with interpersonal relationships and social networks. According to a report on the national career survey (EK 2011a), effective networking is dependent on social skills such as the ability to establish contacts in mu…
Innovative Teaching Strategies in Accounting
2018
Accounting in higher education is a practical subject and teaching financial accounting has nowadays become a challenge. Professional organizations and corporate employers prefer to hire students with critical thinking skills, communication skills, technical skills, and analytical skills. Accounting students often have a negative attitude towards the subject and struggle to understand core concepts of accounting standards. Finding and using new and innovative methods of teaching accounting is a crucial skill for teachers. Certain methods and approaches can truly enhance the learning process, and done right, applying innovative learning and attention-management techniques to classes is a win…
Growing up morally: An experiential classroom unit on moral development
2015
One reason why many of today’s business leaders are frequently viewed as unethical, corrupt, and corruptible is that values transmitted (implicitly) by university business education courses influence students to ignore ethics. This paper argues that to help future business leaders become more ethical, business school implicit values should reflect a more ethical direction. The present paper describes an experiential pedagogy designed to help students develop morally. It does so by asking students to: 1) participate in exercises sensitizing them to ethical issues, 2) reflect on their own ethical values and decisions they’ve made in the past that either mirror or contradict those values, 3) r…
University teaching and ICT. Materials online for training Cmap Tools
2013
The initial training of physical education teachers—In search of the lost meaning of professionalism
2006
This article re-examines the initial training of physical education teachers with the purpose of pinning down its professional significance. The author maintains that we have lost, in part, its meaning, and, in an attempt to recover it, offers two initial strategies: to revisit two basic concepts—education in general and physical education in particular—and to reformulate four key questions: Question 1. What being a physically educated person means… Professionals are urged to establish the objectives of physical education based on the deficiencies, necessities and interests of the children and young people, which are rooted in the nature of the developed societies in which they live (e.g. t…
Raising environmental awareness through education
2016
This paper presents a method for involving learners in awareness-raising and real changes in consumption. The described method is a teaching assignment comprising a self-audit of household chemicals' consumption, system thinking to find the main causes and consequences, finding solutions and taking action. Findings about students' household chemicals consumption patterns and their reactions one month and six months after the assignment are presented and analysed. We found that the students' households use considerable amounts of chemicals and in most cases do not pay attention to their health and environmental impacts when making purchasing decisions. When doing this, students were able to …
Contextual resources in meaning negotiations of a student pair in a web-based history project
2007
Abstract This study examines how one student pair working face-to-face at a computer and engaged in a web-based discussion environment negotiated meanings for their activity and what contextual resources they used in this negotiation process. The aim was also to study how the students themselves interpreted the learning activity. The subjects were two secondary school students (aged 15) participating in a web-based history project. Data was collected by various means in order to validate the findings. Linell's [(1998). Approaching dialogue. Talk, interaction and contexts in dialogical perspectives . Amsterdam: John Benjamins Publishing Co.] notion of contextual resources was used as an anal…
Evaluation in French Higher Education: history, policy and debates
2013
En ligne sur : http://www.scuolademocratica.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/Oss-Int-1_2013-Chevaillier.pdf; Working Paper de "Scuola Democratica, learning for democracy", 2013/05; The French Higher Education System is presently undergoing one of the deepest transformations of its history. In the last few years, several major pieces of legislation, partly unconnected, have triggered a process of change that will alter the structure of the system, the relations among its various components as well as their internal organisation. Parallel to these structural changes, the higher education and research system has been building up a comprehensive evaluation apparatus. After a short account of the pr…
Finnish pre-service teachers’ perceptions of their strategic learning skills and collaboration dispositions
2019
To support the development of pupils’ 21st-century skills, teachers themselves must also be competent in these skills and learn them during pre-service teacher education. The aim of this study is to investigate what kind of profiles emerge among Finnish first-year pre-service teachers’ (N = 872) in terms of perceptions of their strategic learning skills and collaboration dispositions and what background variables explain membership of the profiles found. Latent profile analysis showed five student profiles corresponding to perceived strategic learning skills and collaboration dispositions. The most robust factor explaining the membership of the profiles was life satisfaction. Pre-service te…
