Authentic Audiovisual Resources to Actualise Legal Interpreting Education

2015

New Zealand Aotearoa is an English-medium country and a home to a high number of minority migrant groups speaking over 160 different languages. To cater to the needs of such a diverse population, the Interpreting and Translation Team at Auckland University of Technology has developed a language-neutral pedagogy using a range of innovative teaching methods. One method is the use of authentic audiovisual material incorporating extracts from murder trials to raise awareness of courtroom discourse in general, and lawyers’ questions in particular. The aim of this study was to ascertain to what extent audiovisual clips are beneficial in legal interpreter education. After viewing audiovisual clips…

Humanism and criticism in T. S. Eliot and Carles Riba

2021

Mitochondrial respiration on rumenic and linoleic acids

2001

Rumenic acid ( cis -9, trans -11-C 18:2 ) represents approx. 80% of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) in dairy products. CLA has been shown to exert beneficial effects on health, but little work has been devoted to the ability to oxidize CLA isomers and the role of these isomers in the modulation of β-oxidation flux. In the present study, respiration on rumenic acid was compared with that on linoleic acid ( cis -9, cis -12-C 18:2 ) with the use of rat liver mitochondria. In state-3, respiration was decreased by half with rumenic acid in comparison with linoleic acid. In the uncoupled state, respiration on CLA remained 30% lower. The lower ability to oxidize CLA was investigated through charact…

Study of the tear effect with Eye tracking methodology: A pilot study

2018

Modulation of the hepatic fatty acid pool in peroxisomal 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase B-null mice exposed to the selective PPARalpha agonist Wy14,643

2009

10 pages; International audience; The peroxisomal 3-ketoacyl-CoA thiolase B (Thb) gene was previously identified as a direct target gene of PPARalpha, a nuclear hormone receptor activated by hypolipidemic fibrate drugs. To better understand the role of ThB in hepatic lipid metabolism in mice, Sv129 wild-type and Thb null mice were fed or not the selective PPARalpha agonist Wy14,643 (Wy). Here, it is shown that in contrast to some other mouse models deficient for peroxisomal enzymes, the hepatic PPARalpha signaling cascade in Thb null mice was normal under regular conditions. It is of interest that the hypotriglyceridemic action of Wy was reduced in Thb null mice underlining the conclusion t…

Aged Mice Devoid of the M3 Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Develop Mild Dry Eye Disease

2021

The parasympathetic nervous system is critically involved in the regulation of tear secretion by activating muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. Hence, various animal models targeting parasympathetic signaling have been developed to induce dry eye disease (DED). However, the muscarinic receptor subtype (M1–M5) mediating tear secretion remains to be determined. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that the M3 receptor subtype regulates tear secretion and to evaluate the ocular surface phenotype of mice with targeted disruption of the M3 receptor (M3R−/−). The experimental techniques included quantification of tear production, fluorescein staining of the ocular surface, environmenta…

Genetic systems for a new approach to risk of progression of diabetic retinopathy.

2016

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR) using new strategies to obtain genetic information in type 2 diabetes (T2D) based on interfering ribonucleic acid (RNA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A prospective multicentre case-control study of 132 participants was distributed into: T2D with (+DR) or without (-DR) (T2DG; n=77), and a control group (CG; n=55). After an eye examination and personal interview, tears were collected for molecular analysis (expression of microRNAs [miRNAs] (miRCURY ARN Isolation Kit, Qiagen)]. Libraries, 137 vs. 140bp (GeneMapper, Applied Biosystems), were obtained in 18 samples (T2DG+DR=6; T2DG-DR=6; CG=6) by performing next-generation sequ…

Heterogeneity of the Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) Gene and Metabolic Risk Factors in the EPIC-Potsdam Study

2012

Background: Stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 (SCD1) is an enzyme involved in lipid metabolism. In mice and humans its activity has been associated with traits of the metabolic syndrome, but also with the prevention of saturated fatty acids accumulation and subsequent inflammation, whereas for liver fat content inconsistent results have been reported. Thus, variants of the gene encoding SCD1 (SCD1) could potentially modify metabolic risk factors, but few human studies have addressed this question. Methods: In a sample of 2157 middle-aged men and women randomly drawn from the Potsdam cohort of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition, we investigated the impact of 7 SCD1 tagg…

Visualization of a covalent intermediate between microsomal epoxide hydrolase, but not cholesterol epoxide hydrolase, and their substrates

1997

Mammalian soluble and microsomal epoxide hydrolases have been proposed to belong to the family of alpha/beta-hydrolase-fold enzymes. These enzymes hydrolyse their substrates by a catalytic triad, with the first step of the enzymatic reaction being the formation of a covalent enzyme-substrate ester. In the present paper, we describe the direct visualization of the ester formation between rat microsomal epoxide hydrolase and its substrate. Microsomal epoxide hydrolase was precipitated with acetone after brief incubation with [1-(14)C]epoxystearic acid. After denaturing SDS gel electrophoresis the protein-bound radioactivity was detected by fluorography. Pure epoxide hydrolase and crude micros…
