Comparison of Exposure Techniques and Vitality Assessment of Mosses in Active Biomonitoring for Their Suitability in Assessing Heavy Metal Pollution …
2021
The most widespread and used technique is the moss-bag method in active biomonitoring of air pollution using mosses. In the literature, we can find various studies on the standardization of this method, including attempts to standardize treatments and preparation procedures for their universal application. Few works comprehensively focus on other methods or compare other techniques used in active biomonitoring with mosses, especially including measurements of their vital parameters. Our experiment aimed to assess air pollution by selected heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, Mn, Fe, and Hg) using three moss species (Pleurozium schreberi, Sphagnum fallax, and Dicranum polysetum) during a 12-week ex…
Modified most-probable-number technique for the specific determination of Escherichia coli from environmental samples using a fluorogenic method
1990
A specific and senstive modification of the most-probable-number (MPN) technique by addition of 4-methylumbelliferyl-β-D-glucuronide (MUG) to both presumptive and confirmatory media was performed. The use of this modification allows the precise determination of Escherichia coli from marine samples (seawater, sediment and shellfish) within 7 days compared to 10–12 days required by using of the standard methodology. No false-positive isolates for fluorescence reaction have been observed, although one E. coli strain fluorescent-positive on agar was isolated from nonfluorescent tubes. Klebsiella pneumoniae was the species most frequently detected from tubes with gas and fluorescence production …
Sprachlernspiele im DaF-Unterricht : Einblick in die Spielpraxis des finnischen und ungarischen Deutsch-als-Fremdsprache-Unterrichts in der gymnasial…
2009
The goal of this study is to analyze and compare aspects of language learning games in the context of Finnish and Hungarian high-school teaching of German as a foreign language (GFL). First, the practices of using games in GFL are investigated. Secondly, the subjective theories of teachers on language learning games are analyzed. Thirdly, the differences between the Finnish and Hungarian contexts are discussed. The data for this study was gathered with a written questionnaire (48 Finnish, 49 Hungarian GFL teachers) and through semi-standardized interviews (8 Finnish, 5 Hungarian GFL teachers). In addition, Hungarian and Finnish national curricula are analyzed. Through triangulation, both qua…
Design and Performance Evaluation of a High Power-Density EMI Filter for PWM Inverter-Fed Induction-Motor Drives
2016
This paper presents the design of an electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter for a low-voltage high-current induction-motor drives supplied by dc power grids. In order to effectively design the EMI filter, a suitable common-mode/differential-mode (CM/DM) separation technique has been used. Due to the high operating currents, the software-based separation technique using time-domain measurements has been applied. The proposed technique allows the CM and DM sections of the EMI filter to be properly selected in a more economical way, i.e., without the need of a dedicated hardware or costly radio frequency (RF) instrumentation. The design has been done according to a power-density criterion. …
ShRNA-mediated knock-down of CXCL8 inhibits tumor growth in colorectal liver metastasis.
2018
CXCL8 belongs to proinflammatory chemokines that are predominantly involved in neutrophil chemotaxis and degranulation. Several studies have suggested that secretion of CXCL8 from cancer cells have a profound effect on tumor microenvironment. In this study, in continuation to our previous work of understanding the global picture of invasion related genes in colorectal liver metastases, we clearly show an up-regulation of CXCL8 expression in the tumor cells at the invasion front as compared to the tumor cells in the inner parts of the tumor. Furthermore, ShRNA mediated down-regulation of CXCL8 resulted in inhibition of cell proliferation, viability and invasion in vitro and a near complete g…
Anti-senescence and Anti-inflammatory Effects of the C-terminal Moiety of PTHrP Peptides in OA Osteoblasts.
2016
Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by degenerative changes in the whole joint leading to physical disability in the elderly population. This condition is associated with altered bone metabolism in subchondral areas suggesting that therapeutic strategies aimed at modifying bone cell metabolism may be of interest. We have investigated the effects of several parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP)-derived peptides (1-37): (N-terminal), (107-111) and (107-139) (C-terminal) on senescence features induced by inflammatory stress in human OA osteoblasts. Incubation of these primary cells with interleukin(IL)-1β led to an increased expression of senescence markers senescence-associated-β-galac…
Surgical repair of acute Achilles tendon rupture with an end-to-end tendon suture and tendon flap.
2015
Abstract Background Achilles tendon ruptures are becoming more common. Complications after open or minimally invasive surgery are: recurrent rupture (2–8%), wound breakdown, deep infections, granuloma, and fistulas. The authors expose their experience with a personal technique. Materials In 8 patients with acute rupture of Achilles tendon the surgery was performed at least 25 days after trauma. Clinical exam and MR demonstrated in all case a total lesion of tendon. After a posterolateral skin incision the tendon stumps were debrided and suture in end-to-end fashion. A tendon flap was harvested from the proximal part of the tendon, in order to protect and reinforce the suture itself. A plast…
Silicate modulates the cross-talk between osteoblasts (SaOS-2) and osteoclasts (RAW 264.7 cells): inhibition of osteoclast growth and differentiation
2012
It has been shown that inorganic monomeric and polymeric silica/silicate, in the presence of the biomineralization cocktail, increases the expression of osteoprotegerin (OPG) in osteogenic SaOS-2 sarcoma cells in vitro. In contrast, silicate does not affect the steady-state gene expression level of the osteoclastogenic ligand receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL). In turn it can be expected that the concentration ratio of the mediators OPG/RANKL increases in the presence of silicate. In addition, silicate enhances the growth potential of SaOS-2 cells in vitro, while it causes no effect on RAW 264.7 cells within a concentration range of 10-100 µM. Applying a co-cultivation assay system,…
The influence of lateral release on patello-femoral joint loading in knee arthroplasty
1992
Eight fresh, cadaveric knees have been fitted with four different total knee cemented prostheses. Loading forces at the bone implant fixation interface of the patella component have been measured in a knee joint testing rig by four miniaturized force transducers, before and after a lateral release of the patellar retinaculum. The lateral release resulted in a significant local force reduction in the lateral and/or proximal quadrant of the patella resection plane depending on the knee flexion angle, quadriceps tensile force direction, and the patellar prosthesis design.
Cells of extramammary Paget's disease express cytokeratins different from those of epidermal cells.
1985
The patterns of expression of cytokeratin polypeptides which are closely correlated to routes of differentiation of epithelial cells were studied in extramammary Paget's disease. Cytokeratins of uninvolved and involved epidermis were analyzed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis of microdissected tissue preparations as well as by immunofluorescence microscopy using cytokeratin antibodies with different specificities. In uninvolved epidermis, cytokeratins Nos. 1, 5, 6, 10, 11, 14, and 16, characteristic of keratinocytes, were found. Epidermis infiltrated by Paget's cells contained the same components and, in addition, cytokeratins Nos. 7, 8, 18, and 19, the latter being characteristic of s…
