Cell Lines: A Tool for In Vitro Drug Metabolism Studies
2008
Primary cultured hepatocytes are a valuable in vitro model for drug metabolism studies. However, their widespread use is greatly hindered by the scarcity of suitable human liver samples. Moreover, the well-known in vitro phenotypic instability of hepatocytes, the irregular availability of fresh human liver for cell harvesting purposes, and the high batch-to-batch functional variability of hepatocyte preparations obtained from different human liver donors, seriously complicate their use in routine testing. To overcome these limitations, different cell line models have been proposed for drug metabolism screening. Human liver-derived cell lines would be ideal models for this purpose given thei…
A perturbation approach for the response of dynamically modified structural systems
1998
The problem of the structural analysis under changes of dynamical parameters is of particular interest. This is due to the fact that often the real structures are different from the predicted ones. In this paper, an unconditionally stable step-by-step procedure, able to evaluate the deterministic response of linear structures with modifications, is presented. The proposed procedure requires the evaluation of the transition matrix, which is the fundamental operator of the step-by-step solution, by means of a perturbation approach. This technique overcomes the difficulties connected with the evaluation of the eigenproperties of the modified structures usually required to obtain the transition…
Un'occasione perduta: l'Eden Teatro Biondo di Ernesto Basile. Dai disegni di archivio alla ricostruzione digitale
2016
Primary culture of avian embryonic heart forming region cells to study the regulation of vertebrate early heart morphogenesis by vitamin A
2014
Background: Important knowledge about the role of vitamin A in vertebrate heart development has been obtained using the vitamin A-deficient avian in ovo model which enables the in vivo examination of very early stages of vertebrate heart morphogenesis. These studies have revealed the critical role of the vitamin A-active form, retinoic acid (RA) in the regulation of several developmental genes, including the important growth regulatory factor, transforming growth factor-beta2 (TGFβ2), involved in early events of heart morphogenesis. However, this in ovo model is not readily available for elucidating details of molecular mechanisms determining RA activity, thus limiting further examination o…
EAGLE 2006 - Multi-purpose, multi-angle and multi-sensor in-situ and airborne campaigns over grassland and forest
2009
EAGLE2006 – an intensive field campaign for the advances in land surface hydrometeorological processes – was carried out in the Netherlands from 8th to 18th June 2006, involving 16 institutions with in total 67 people from 16 different countries. In addition to the acquisition of multi-angle and multi-sensor satellite data, several airborne instruments – an optical imaging sensor, an imaging microwave radiometer, and a flux airplane – were deployed and extensive ground measurements were conducted over one grassland site at Cabauw and two forest sites at Loobos and Speulderbos in the central part of the Netherlands. The generated data set is both unique and urgently needed for the developmen…
Biosynthesis of ecdysones in isolated prothoracic glands and oenocytes of Tenebrio molitor in vitro.
1974
Abstract Isolated prothoracic glands from Tenebrio larvae synthesize in vitro α-ecdysone, but not β-ecdysone from 4-14C-cholesterol. Isolated abdominal oenocytes from the larvae synthesize mainly β-ecdysone, but only little α-ecdysone. When prothoracic glands and oenocytes are cultured together, the α-ecdysone derived from the prothoracic glands is oxidized by the oenocytes to β-ecdysone. The newly synthesized hormones are not stored in the cells, but are secreted into the medium if sufficient amounts of non-labelled hormones are present. If no unlabelled hormones are added to the culture medium, the newly formed hormones are converted to a large extent into polar conjugates.
Extreme interdependence and extreme contagion between emerging markets
2007
Abstract This paper uses seemingly unrelated probit techniques to separate the transmission of a crisis due to broadly defined macroeconomic interdependence from contagion due to herding, avoiding some of the caveats of the more traditional cross-correlation approach. We find that pure contagion occurred in a limited number of country pairs generally belonging to the same region. A reduction in speculative pressure can also be identified between countries in different regional blocks. This seems to suggest that after an initial crisis episode, investors tend to discriminate on the basis of location and common macroeconomic weakness or perceived similarity.
The Time Response of Glass Resistive Plate Chambers to Heavily Ionizing Particles
2007
The HARP system of resistive plate chambers (RPCs) was designed to perform particle identification by the measurement of the difference in the time-of-flight of different particles. In previous papers an apparent discrepancy was shown between the response of the RPCs to minimum ionizing pions and heavily ionizing protons. Using the kinematics of elastic scattering off a hydrogen target a controlled beam of low momentum recoil protons was directed onto the chambers. With this method the trajectory and momentum, and hence the time-of-flight of the protons can be precisely predicted without need for a measurement of momentum of the protons. It is demonstrated that the measurement of the time-o…
Photocatalytic ozonation under visible light for the remediation of water effluents and its integration with an electro-membrane bioreactor
2018
Abstract Photocatalysis and photocatalytic ozonation under visible light have been applied for the purification of a complex aqueous matrix such as the grey water of Masdar City (UAE), by using N-doped brookite-rutile catalysts. Preliminary runs on 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) solutions allowed to test the reaction system in the presence of a model pollutant and to afford the relevant kinetic parameters of the process. Subsequently, the remediation of grey water effluent has been evaluated in terms of the reduction of total organic carbon (TOC) and bacterial counts. The concentration of the most abundant inorganic ionic species in the effluent has been also monitored during reaction. Photocatalytic…
Acute myocardial effects of mitoxantrone in the rabbit
1987
Some clinical studies that were performed for the purpose of assessing the potential cardiotoxicity of mitoxantrone (DHAD) have shown that repeated administrations of the drugs in some patients cause a mild impairment of cardiac functions and morphological changes in the myocardial cells qualitatively similar to those elicited by anthracyclines. Since doxorubicin has been reported to cause acute cardiac effects, probably related to its chronic cardiotoxicity, experiments were carried out on the rabbit heart to investigate whether DHAD is also able to induce acute cardiac effects. Our results show that this drug caused a reversible dose-related impairment of cardiac contractility on the isol…
