Dataset for Mucin induces CRISPR-Cas defense in an opportunistic pathogen
2022
This dataset contains raw data points of (1) phage-bacterium co-evolution experiment (flavobacterium columnare colony counts, phage counts, bacterial growth characteristics and number of CRISPR-Cas spacers) and (2) from competition experiment between Flavobacterium columnare and Aeromonas sp. For detailed method description, see the attached Documentation file.
Responses of zooplankton to cane sugar additions to a small humic lake, Alinen Mustajärvi
2010
The response to projected increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loading to boreal lakes is being studied in lake Alinen Mustajärvi, a small humic lake in southern Finland, where labile DOC concentration has been artificially increased during 2008 and 2009 by monthly additions of cane sugar. As part of this wider project, in this thesis the responses of the zooplankton community to cane sugar addition were studied. Zooplankton samples were collected monthly in the ice-free periods of 2007, 2008 and 2009 and the mean densities and mean carbon biomasses of rotifers and crustacean zooplankton (cladocerans and copepods) were calculated. Stable isotope analyses (δ13C and δ15N) were made for …
Plasmid Viability Depends on the Ecological Setting of Hosts within a Multiplasmid Community
2022
Plasmids are extrachromosomal genetic elements, some of which disperse horizontally between different strains and species of bacteria. They are a major factor in the dissemination of virulence factors and antibiotic resistance. Understanding the ecology of plasmids has a notable anthropocentric value, and therefore, the interactions between bacterial hosts and individual plasmids have been studied in detail. However, bacterial systems often carry multiple genetically distinct plasmids, but dynamics within these multiplasmid communities have remained unstudied. Here, we set to investigate the survival of 11 mobilizable or conjugative plasmids under five different conditions where the hosts h…
PRD1-viruksen vaikutus bakteerisoluihin, jotka sisältävät antibioottivastustuskyvyn antavan plasmidin
2010
Antibioottiresistenssi luokitellaan ihmisen terveyden suurimmaksi uhaksi. Antibioottiresistenssi lisääntyy bakteeripopulaatiossa konjugatiivisen plasmidin sisältävien bakteerien välityksellä jopa eri bakteerilajien välillä. PRD1-virus infektoi N-, P- ja W-tyypin konjugatiivisia plasmideja kantavia bakteereja. Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää, voisiko PRD1-viruksen avulla poistaa bakteeripopulaation vastustuskyky antibiooteille. Tätä testattiin kasvattamalla antibiooteille vastustuskykyisiä bakteereja ilman virusta ja viruksen läsnä ollessa. Bakteerien kasvukäyrät mitattiin lisäksi eri kasvuympäristöissä. Tulosten mukaan virus pudottaa populaation antibioottiresistenssin 100 %:sta jopa…

Enterobacter cloacae administration induces hepatic damage and subcutaneous fat accumulation in high-fat diet fed mice.
2018
Accumulating evidence indicates that gut microbiota plays a significant role in obesity, insulin resistance and associated liver disorders. Family Enterobacteriaceae and especially Enterobacter cloacae strain B29 have been previously linked to obesity and hepatic damage. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain unclear. Therefore, we comprehensively examined the effects of E. cloacae subsp. cloacae (ATCC® 13047™) administration on host metabolism of mice fed with high-fat diet (HFD). C57BL/6N mice were randomly divided into HFD control, chow control, and E. cloacae treatment groups. The E. cloacae treatment group received live bacterial cells in PBS intragastrically twice a week, every ot…
The effect of iron on the biodegradation of natural dissolved organic matter
2016
Iron (Fe) may alter the biodegradation of dissolved organic matter (DOM), by interacting with DOM, phosphorus (P), and microbes. We isolated DOM and a bacterial community from boreal lake water and examined bacterial growth on DOM in laboratory experiments. Fe was introduced either together with DOM (DOM-Fe) or into bacterial suspension, which led to the formation of insoluble Fe precipitates on bacterial surfaces (Fe coating). In the latter case, the density of planktonic bacteria was an order of magnitude lower than that in the corresponding treatment without introduced Fe. The association of Fe with DOM decreased bacterial growth, respiration, and growth efficiency compared with DOM alon…
