This study explores the writings of Sylvia Plath Forum, a discussion forum in the Internet that was launched in 1998. Using Norman Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis, Chaïm Perelman’s theory of argumentation, Kenneth Burke’s idea of identification as the basis of rhetoric, and René Girards’s theory of mimetic desire as its framework this study looks into the forum’s meaning-making processes and the ways the author Sylvia Plath (1932-1963) and her readers are represented on the forum. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää amerikkalaisessa komediasarjassa Tuho-osastossa (engl. Scrubs) esiintyvien uusien englanninkielisten sanojen syntytapoja ja näiden sanojen suomenkielisiä käännöksiä. Tutkimuksessa keskitytään seitsemään erilaiseen sananmuodostustekniikkaan, sekä tekstitysten kääntämiseen. Niinpä tutkimuskysymys on kaksiosainen: 1. Minkä tyyppisiä sananmuodostustekniikoita käytetään uusien englanninkielisten sanojen luomisessa Tuho-osastossa, ja 2. Kuinka nämä uudet sanat on käännetty suomeksi. The present study focuses on the International Master’s Degree Programs (IMDP) of the University of Jyväskylä and issues related to English-medium instruction (EMI). At the core of the present study are the IMDP students’ conceptualizations of, and reflections on, academic English. Furthermore, the study examines the IMDP students’ reported language gains in academic English as well as the internal and external factors to which the students’ attribute these gains, or the lack of them. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin ammatillisen koulutuksen opiskelijoiden (hyvinvointi-, hius- ja kauneusala) kriittistä nettilukutaitoa. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin aikaisemman tiedon, tekstien lukemisjärjestyksen ja perustelutaitojen yhteyttä siihen, kuinka hyvin opiskelijat osasivat arvioida luotettavia (varmentaminen) ja epäluotettavia (kyseenalaistaminen) nettitekstejä sekä erottaa luotettavat tekstit epäluotettavista. Electrophysiological evidence for the effectiveness of images versus text in warnings

AbstractWarning sign plays an important role in risk avoidance. Many studies have found that images are better warnings than text, while others have revealed flaws of image-only warning signs. To better understand the factors underlying the effectiveness of different types of warning signs (image only, text only, or image and text), this study adopted event-related potential technology to explore the differences at the neurocognitive level using the oddball paradigm and the Go/No-go paradigm. This paper is concerned with exploring the role of embedded genres in expanding the meaning potential of long texts, focusing especially on complex tertiary assignments. A significant body of work has evolved in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) on modelling “big texts” as macrogenres since Martin (1994: 29) posed the question how texts “get bigger than a page”. However, based on detailed genre analyses of high-scoring undergraduate business country reports, this paper illustrates that not all big texts are macrogenres made up of elemental genre complexes. "Kylmän sodan aloittajalla oli kireä meininki" : yhdeksäsluokkalaisten historian tekstitaidot tarkasteltavana

Erittelemme artikkelissa tapaustutkimusta, jossa selvitettiin yhdeksäsluokkalaisten historian tekstitaitovalmiuksia. Tutkimuksessamme yhdeksäsluokkalaiset kolmelta eri paikkakunnalta analysoivat kylmään sotaan liittyvää dokumenttiaineistoa, jonka pohjalta heidän tuli kirjoittaa oma tulkintansa esseemuotoon. Yli puolet tutkimukseen osallistuneista oppilaista ei kyennyt määrittelemään kylmän sodan käsitettä oikein. Valtaosa vastaajista ei myöskään kyennyt hyödyntämään dokumentteja tulkintansa pohjana. Vain harva yhdeksäsluokkalainen osoitti vastauksissaan tiedonalalle ominaisia piirteitä. Historian tekstitaitojen oppiminen vaatii aikaa ja systemaattista harjoittelua. Tutkimustuloksemme antava…
