It is evident that our technological society is undoubtedly linked to the diffusion of images. Authors such as Gottfried Boehm John Mitchell Hans Belting investigated the nature of the image by laying the foundations in the 1990s for the idea of a pictorial turn of a culture totally dominated by images that has now become a real technical possibility on global scale. A new statute of the image that is used to collect under the label of iconic turner inserted in the wider field of visual culture studies. The use of the term culture alongside that of visual is indicative of the breadth of the field of investigation that visual culture studies aim to seek: they do not want to limit themselves to ascertaining the predominance of the visual in contemporary society and an evaluation of its aesthetic component. but they want to proceed towards an anthropological research in which visual culture is analyzed as a particular lifestyle that expresses certain meanings and values not only in art and high culture but also in institutions and daily behavior. We will try to apply this new paradigm to photographs: instead of asking ourselves what the images mean let's try to ask ourselves what they want.

A Modern Classic of Fantastic Art: José Hernández

2021

Higher Education in Networked Knowledge Societies

2016

This conceptual chapter articulates an analytical synthesis: Networked Knowledge Society. This synthesis incorporates the role of knowledge, information and communication technology (ICT) and networks in order to better understand the dynamic nature of contemporary societies. It also conceptualises the relationships between contemporary societies and higher education. A traditional approach to examining the relationships between higher education and society is to consider this from the societal point of departure to interpret or explain change in higher education. Our approach, by contrast, is relational with respect to the dynamic role of higher education in societies and the ways in which…

Uenighetsdramaturgier

2019

Mapping Leisure across Borders

2013

Leisure has become an important domain in sociological research. While time is often spent in daily “pressing” activities, leisure time, in its multifaceted aspects, is rather oriented to convey new answers for individual and collective needs. Such answers are an important field for leisure studies as well as for the sociological questions connected with leisure. For instance, in developed countries, some of these answers concern the ways in which leisure may be spent in “the best way possible for me”, or “for my family”, or “for me with my friends”, hence focusing on it as a new basic human need/desire oriented to foster self-fulfillment. However, this idea of leisure as self-fulfillment m…

Posted Migration and Segregation in the European Construction Sector

2015

Worker ‘posting’ or temporary migration of manual workers sent by their employers to work on projects abroad has become increasingly prominent in the European construction industry. It is now normal to find groups of workers from all around Europe on construction sites, living in nearby temporary accommodations, moving on to other projects or back home when the project is complete. This article highlights the interaction between the social and spatial segregation and transnational mobility of these workers in the European Union construction labour market. We argue that the work-focused and employer-dominated nature of the posted workers' social world abroad contributes to their segregation …

Deep down at the base of Italy, is an oft neglected region, its toe dipping into and dividing the waters of two sea…
