Data from: Stable coexistence of genetically divergent Atlantic cod ecotypes at multiple spatial scales

2018

Coexistence in the same habitat of closely related yet genetically different populations is a phenomenon that challenges our understanding of local population structure and adaptation. Identifying the underlying mechanisms for such coexistence can yield new insight into adaptive evolution, diversification, and the potential for organisms to adapt and persist in response to a changing environment. Recent studies have documented cryptic, sympatric populations of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in coastal areas. We analyzed genetic origin of 6483 individual cod sampled annually over 14 years from 125 locations along the Norwegian Skagerrak coast and document stable coexistence of two genetically d…

Data from: Do island plant populations really have lower genetic variation than mainland populations? Effects of selection and distribution range on …

2015

Ecological and evolutionary studies largely assume that island populations display low levels of neutral genetic variation. However, this notion has only been formally tested in a few cases involving plant taxa, and the confounding effect of selection on genetic diversity (GD) estimates based on putatively neutral markers has typically been overlooked. Here, we generated nuclear microsatellite and plastid DNA sequence data in Periploca laevigata, a plant taxon with an island-mainland distribution area, to (i) investigate whether selection affects GD estimates of populations across contrasting habitats and (ii) test the long-standing idea that island populations have lower GD than their main…

Data from: Gene flow from an adaptively divergent source causes rescue through genetic and demographic factors in two wild populations of Trinidadian…

2015

Genetic rescue, an increase in population growth owing to the infusion of new alleles, can aid the persistence of small populations, but its use as a management tool is limited by a lack of empirical data geared towards predicting effects of gene flow on local adaptation and demography. Experimental translocations provide an ideal opportunity to monitor the demographic consequences of gene flow. In this study we take advantage of two experimental introductions of Trinidadian guppies to test the effects of gene flow on downstream native populations. We individually marked guppies from the native populations to monitor population dynamics for 3 months before and 26 months after gene flow. We …

Cessation of Cerebral Blood Flow in Total Irreversible Loss of Brain Function

1969

After the demonstration, by our group [3, 4], that in cases of so-called “cerebral death” there is an absence of clearance from the brain of 133Xe selectively injected into the internal carotid artery, further attention was dedicated to establish possible sources of error in this technique.

Mediterranean transcriptions in Sicily

2014

In Vitro Regeneration of

2019

Three caper (Capparis spinosa L.) biotypes grown on the Sicilian island of Salina (38°33′49″ N) were micropropagated to evaluate two different in vitro culture systems: one using the traditional solid medium, and the other based on liquid culture in a PlantForm bioreactor. PlantForm is a temporary immersion system (TIS), a new propagation method in which the shoots undergo temporary immersion in a liquid medium in order to avoid the accumulation of gas through forced ventilation. This study proposes a protocol to improve the efficiency of in vitro propagation of caper plants, while also reducing production costs, because of the elimination of the gelling agent, and manual labor, requiring l…

Simon Starling, A l’ombre du pin tordu

2018

2003

This PhD addresses the issue of musical time and form in the second half of the XXth century with the joint perspective of composition and perception. The first chapter describes composer’s main conceptions of musical time, compositional strategies, functions and formal models, as well as the main musicological theories concerning musical form. The second chapter is devoted to the semiotic square of musical form (definition, typological and syntagmatic approach). The third chapter is dedicated to R. Reynolds’The Angel of Death, a work that allows us to compare writing and perception. The fourth chapter reviews the main studies and theories forged by psychology around this question, and pres…

"Janie do Cię wracamy w czarnoleskie lipy". Polskie tradycje źródłowe w odmianach literacko-kulturowej współczesności (wybory - powtórzenia - różnice)

2018

The subject of the article - developed through the literary and cultural contexts of contemporary literature - concentrates mainly on different forms of the presence of tradition (targeting the Romantic one as key and the Old Polish as the subsequent one). A look at the styles and tones of the literature-"thriving" languages of these traditions allows us to see these traditions in a different critical light (national symbols/Polish signs/patters/transformations).

Cuidado y responsabilidad: de Hans Jonas a Carol Gilligan

2019
