Crystal Structures and Cytotoxicity of ent-Kaurane-Type Diterpenoids from Two Aspilia Species
2018
A phytochemical investigation of the roots of Aspilia pluriseta led to the isolation of ent-kaurane-type diterpenoids and additional phytochemicals (1⁻23). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopic and mass spectrometric analyses. The absolute configurations of seven of the ent-kaurane-type diterpenoids (3⁻6, 6b, 7 and 8) were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Eleven of the compounds were also isolated from the roots and the aerial parts of Aspilia mossambicensis. The literature NMR assignments for compounds 1 and 5 were revised. In a cytotoxicity assay, 12α-methoxy-ent-kaur-9(11),1…
A New Benzopyranyl Cadenane Sesquiterpene and Other Antiplasmodial and Cytotoxic Metabolites from Cleistochlamys kirkii
2019
Phytochemical investigations of ethanol root bark and stem bark extracts of Cleistochlamys kirkii (Benth.) Oliv. (Annonaceae) yielded a new benzopyranyl cadinane-type sesquiterpene (cleistonol, 1) alongside 12 known compounds (2&ndash
Crotofolane Diterpenoids and Other Constituents Isolated from Croton kilwae
2023
Six new crotofolane diterpenoids (1-6) and 13 known compounds (7-19) were isolated from the MeOH- CH2Cl2 (1:1, v/v) extracts of the leaves and stem bark of Croton kilwae. The structures of the new compounds were elucidated by extensive analysis of spectroscopic and mass spectrometric data. The structure of crotokilwaepoxide A (1) was confirmed by single -crystal X-ray diffraction, allowing for the determination of its absolute configuration. The crude extracts and the isolated compounds were investigated for antiviral activity against respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and human rhinovirus type-2 (HRV-2) in HEp-2 and HeLa cells, respectively, for antibacterial activity against the Gram-posit…
Modified ent-Abietane Diterpenoids from the Leaves of Suregada zanzibariensis
2022
The leaf extract of Suregada zanzibariensis gave two new modified ent-abietane diterpenoids, zanzibariolides A (1) and B (2), and two known triterpenoids, simiarenol (3) and β-amyrin (4). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated based on NMR and MS data analysis. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction was used to establish the absolute configurations of compounds 1 and 2. The crude leaf extract inhibited the infectivity of herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2, IC50 11.5 μg/mL) and showed toxicity on African green monkey kidney (GMK AH1) cells at CC50 52 μg/mL. The isolated compounds 1–3 showed no anti-HSV-2 activity and exhibited insignificant toxicity against GMK AH1 cells at ≥100 μM. p…
Stereoselective synthesis and transformation of pinane-based 2-amino-1,3-diols
2021
A library of pinane-based 2-amino-1,3-diols was synthesised in a stereoselective manner. Isopinocarveol prepared from (−)-α-pinene was converted into condensed oxazolidin-2-one in two steps by carbamate formation followed by a stereoselective aminohydroxylation process. The relative stereochemistry of the pinane-fused oxazolidin-2-one was determined by 2D NMR and X-ray spectroscopic techniques. The regioisomeric spiro-oxazolidin-2-one was prepared in a similar way starting from the commercially available (1R)-(−)-myrtenol (10). The reduction or alkaline hydrolysis of the oxazolidines, followed by reductive alkylation resulted in primary and secondary 2-amino-1,3-diols, which underwent a reg…
Pyrolysis-gas chromatography : mass spectrometry analysis of di- and triterpenoids
2017
The objective of this work was to study a specific class of extractives existing in lignocellulosic biomass and more precisely in wood materials, and their thermochemical behavior during pyrolysis. The focus was centered on the class of terpenes and terpenoids; specifically two model compounds, abietic acid and betulinol, were chosen to represent the subclasses of di- and triterpenoids, respectively. The model compounds were investigated via pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) and the main objective was to study their product profiles and characteristic fragmentations, as well as the influence of specific variables (pyrolysis temperature and time) on pyrolysis products…
Rapid Self-Healing and Thixotropic Organogelation of Amphiphilic Oleanolic Acid–Spermine Conjugates
2021
Natural and abundant plant triterpenoids are attractive starting materials for the synthesis of conformationally rigid and chiral building blocks for functional soft materials. Here, we report the rational design of three oleanolic acid–triazole–spermine conjugates, containing either one or two spermine units in the target molecules, using the Cu(I)-catalyzed Huisgen 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. The resulting amphiphile-like molecules 2 and 3, bearing just one spermine unit in the respective molecules, self-assemble into highly entangled fibrous networks leading to gelation at a concentration as low as 0.5% in alcoholic solvents. Using step-strain rheological measurements, we show ra…
Can foliar-applied nutrients improve caraway (Carum carvi L.) seed oil composition?
2021
Caraway seeds contain between 0.5–7% essential oil, rich in monoterpenes that have a characteristic aroma and chemical properties. Caraway oil has several bioactive compounds that are of industrial importance, particularly for pharmaceutical and health care products. Carvone and limonene are the main terpenes present in caraway oil, which along with some unique fatty acids (i.e. petroselinic acid) determine caraway (Carum carvi L.) oil quality. Both terpenes are important raw materials for industrial applications and their concentration influences the price of caraway seed and oil, hence there is need for identifying management practices that may increase the concentration of these and othe…
Kuusen pihkan etanoliuuton optimointi
2018
Kuusessa on muutakin hyödynnettävää kuin paperin ja kartongin valmistukseen tarvittava raaka-aine. Mielenkiinto on kohdistunut etenkin puun sisältämiin yhdisteisiin, joilla on havaittu olevan suotuisia terveydellisiä vaikutuksia. Tällainen on kuusen pihka, joka on useamman yhdisteen seos. Kuusen eri osien sisältämien yhdisteiden tutkimus on yhä ajankohtaisempaa. Esimerkiksi niin kuusesta kuin männystä saatavia antibiootteja tutkitaan Itä-Suomen yliopistossa. Repolar Pharmaceuticals Oy perustettiin vuonna 2006 pihkavalmisteiden tuotannon aloittamiseksi. Idea saatiin kotitekoisesta pihkasalvasta, jota yleisesti käytettiin Lapissa haavojen hoitoon. Repolar Pharmaceuticalsin tilaaman työn aihee…
