THE INTENSITY OF SEXUAL SELECTION PREDICTS WEAPON SIZE IN MALE BOVIDS

2007

As a classical example of a sexually selected trait, the horns of male bovids offer a prime opportunity to identify predictors of the intensity of sexual selection. Here I use the comparative method to quantify sexual and natural selection pressures behind interspecific variation in horn length. I show that male horn length depends on factors proposed to affect the mean mate number per mating male, correlating positively with group size and negatively with male territoriality. This suggests that whereas group size increases the opportunity for sexual selection, territoriality reduces it because territorial males are unable to follow and monopolize female groups as effectively as males in no…

Does Population Density Determine the Mating Strategy in Males of the Water Strider Aquarius paludum?

2018

Mating behavior of a large Aquarius paludum paludum (Fabricius 1794) (Hemiptera: Gerridae: Gerrini) population was investigated on several field surveys during the mating season. Both types of mating behavior known for semi-aquatic true bugs were observed in the studied population: aggressive Type I mating for non-territorial males and unaggressive Type II mating for the territorial males. Some males establish individual territories at the lake shores that they defend for around one hour and switch to aggressive mating if they fail to attract a female to mate, while most males remain non-territorial. Radial 1–1.5 meter territories were aggressively defended from other males, conflicts being…

Cuevas rituales ibéricas en el territorio de Kelin (ss. V-III a.C.).

2018

The Requena-Utiel plateau, in the interior of the Prov…

Loss of density-dependence and incomplete control by dominant breeders in a territorial species with density outbreaks

2011

Abstract Background A territory as a prerequisite for breeding limits the maximum number of breeders in a given area, and thus lowers the proportion of breeders if population size increases. However, some territorially breeding animals can have dramatic density fluctuations and little is known about the change from density-dependent processes to density-independence of breeding during a population increase or an outbreak. We suggest that territoriality, breeding suppression and its break-down can be understood with an incomplete-control model, developed for social breeders and social suppression. Results We studied density dependence in an arvicoline species, the bank vole, known as a terri…

Extraterritorial Jurisdiction in International Law

2015

Application of internal law by a state beyond its own territory is an extraordinary action in international law. It requires not only a solid justification but is also subject to many restrictions. It often comes to conflicts against this background that is why extraterritorial jurisdiction is considered as a dangerous but yet an effective instrument of foreign politics. The article not only provides a concise definitions of extraterritoriality but also points to its acceptable bases (liaisons) and restrictions. Moreover, a review of interesting, representative doctrine stances has been done. Controversies and dangers related to the discussed institution are explicitly emphasized. In contra…

Implantations, activités et relations des établissements d'assistance en Bourgogne à la fin du Moyen Age

2012

The study presented here is the conclusion of an inventory about hospitals having existed on the territory of some dioceses (Autun, Auxerre, Chalon-sur-Saône, Nevers and the south of that of Langres diocese) between XIIth and XVth centuries. Based on the data collected, an atlas of assistance and a directory of sources on medieval hospitals of the study area has been made. The compiled informations proved to be very different but also very heterogeneous. Nevertheless, reflexions were conducted about the characteristics of these hospitals and their relationships with their economic, religious, political and social environments. It revolves around three parts dealing by turns the influence of…

Mediterranean regionalism from territory to trains: spatial politics and planning of macro-regions and transport networks in Spain

2015

The contested planning of European macro-regions and Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) exemplifies the complexities of spatial politics, territorial and relational. What stratagems – discursive and cartographic – may regional actors employ in the process, and what can we learn from them? In context of European Union integration policies, we explore Spanish regional politics – discursive and cartographic – surrounding planning of cross-border regions and a TEN-T “Mediterranean Corridor” (and its alternatives). The contested remapping of macro-regions and transport networks reveals the role of spatial planning in the vertebracio (structuration in Catalan) of European territory in disti…

Demographic responses of a site-faithful and territorial predator to its fluctuating prey: long-tailed skuas and arctic lemmings.

2014

Summary1. Environmental variability, through interannual variation in food availability or climaticvariables, is usually detrimental to population growth. It can even select for constancy in keylife-history traits, though some exceptions are known. Changes in the level of environmentalvariability are therefore important to predict population growth or life-history evolution.Recently, several cyclic vole and lemming populations have shown large dynamical changesthat might affect the demography or life-histories of rodent predators.2. Skuas constitute an important case study among rodent predators, because of theirstrongly saturating breeding productivity (they lay only two eggs) and high deg…

Social behavior, chemical communication, and adult neurogenesis: Studies of scent mark function in Podarcis wall lizards

2011

Lacertid lizards have been hailed as a model system for the study of reptilian chemical communication. However, results obtained with the genus Podarcis, a diverse group of wall lizards with complex systematics, challenge emerging paradigms and caution against hasty generalizations. Here we review the available evidence on the role of chemical stimuli in male-female and male-male interactions in Iberian Podarcis. Males of several species can discriminate between chemicals left on substrates by females of their own or a different species, suggesting that differences in female chemical cues may underlie species recognition in this group. Females, on the other hand, do not respond differential…
