Right/Left Ventricular Blood Pool T2 Ratio as an Innovative Cardiac MRI Screening Tool for the Identification of Left‐to‐Right Shunts in Patients Wit…

2021

Background Left-to-right (L-R) shunts are characterized by a pathological connection between high- and low-pressure systems, leading to a mixing of oxygen-rich blood with low oxygenated blood. They are typically diagnosed by phase-contrast cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) which requires extensive planning. T2 is sensitive to blood oxygenation and may be able to detect oxygenation differences between the left (LV) and right ventricles (RV) caused by L-R shunts. Purpose To test the feasibility of routine T2 mapping to detect L-R shunts. Study type Retrospective. Population Patients with known L-R shunts (N = 27), patients with RV disease without L-R shunts (N = 21), and healthy volunt…

Imaging Approach for Evaluation of Focal Liver Lesions

2009

Focal liver lesions are common in the general population. Radiology (imaging) plays a pivotal role for the diagnosis, staging, treatment planning, and follow-up of focal liver lesions. To maximize lesion detection and characterization, imaging needs to be performed with appropriate equipment by using protocols carefully designed on the basis of the underlying clinical context. In addition, the decision of an imaging modality cannot be based on the diagnostic accuracy of an imaging test solely but must also consider patient safety and cost-effectiveness.

Chromophobe Renal Cell Carcinoma

1996

SUMMARY A case ofchromophobe renal cell carcinoma is reported in a 73 year-old man. Light microscopically, the tumor was composed of polygonal cells with a slightly eosinophilic and a fine reticular pattern, and a reaction of the cytoplasm with Hale's acid iron colloid. Ultrastructural analysis showed membranous microuesicles within the tumor cells, with degenerated mitochondria. Immunohistochemical profile against intermediate filaments was positive to cytokeratin 18 and negative against uimentin. Flow cytometry and cytogenetics revealed a predominant bypertriploid population. Few cases have been published with flow cytometry and cytogenetic findings. We report a new case.

Primary Persistent Atrial Fibrillation: A Distinct Arrhythmia Subentity of an Ablation Population

2015

INTRODUCTION Persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF) can occur either as a sustained arrhythmia that has progressed from initially paroxysmal AF or as primary persAF without a history of any spontaneously terminated episode. There is a paucity of data differentiating between the 2 different persAF entities. Thus, we prospectively evaluated baseline characteristics, electrophysiological features, and ablation outcome in these 2 patient cohorts. METHODS AND RESULTS A total number of 154 consecutive persAF patients (63 ± 10 years, f = 42, longstanding persAF = 60) were characterized in terms of having primary persAF (P-persAF group) or persAF that secondarily progressed from paroxysmal AF (S-p…

Comparison of Sulfur Hexafluoride Microbubble (SonoVue)-Enhanced Myocardial Contrast Echocardiography With Gated Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomo…

2013

Objectives The purpose of this study was to compare sulfur hexafluoride microbubble (SonoVue)-enhanced myocardial contrast echocardiography (MCE) with single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) relative to coronary angiography (CA) for assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD). Background Small-scale studies have shown that myocardial perfusion assessed by SonoVue-enhanced MCE is a viable alternative to SPECT for CAD assessment. However, large multicenter studies are lacking. Methods Patients referred for myocardial ischemia testing at 34 centers underwent rest/vasodilator SonoVue-enhanced flash-replenishment MCE, standard Tc-99m-labeled electrocardiography-gated SPECT, and quanti…

THU0248 GLOMERULAR AND TUBULOINTERSTITIAL LESIONS IN PER-PROTOCOL REPEAT BUT NOT BASELINE KIDNEY BIOPSY PORTEND RELAPSE AND LONG-TERM RENAL FUNCTION …

2020

Background:In patients with lupus nephritis (LN), clinical response to treatment and renal histopathology have been shown to be discordant. No clinical or laboratory markers have to date been shown to reliably portend renal prognosis, in particular renal function impairment. Objectives:To investigate whether per-protocol repeat renal biopsies are predictive of LN relapses and long-term impairment of renal function.Methods:Forty-two patients with an incident biopsy-proven active proliferative (class III/IV ± V) LN from the LN database of the Université catholique de Louvain were included in the present retrospective study. Per-protocol repeat kidney biopsies were performed in all patients aft…

Accuracy of the water-siphon test associated to barium study in a high prevalence gastro-oesophageal reflux disease population: a novel statistical a…

2010

Summary Rationale, aims and objectives  Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is ‘a condition which develops when the reflux of gastric content causes troublesome symptoms or complications’. Instrumental diagnostic tests generally used for GORD are 24-hour pH-metry and upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy but barium study associated with provocative manoeuvres such as the water-siphon test (WST), has also been used for GORD. The aim of this paper was to estimate the accuracy of several tests in patients with GORD in a tertiary care setting, focusing on WST, which is rapid and non-invasive, simple to perform and well-tolerated by patients. Method  A total of 172 consecutive patients, sym…

AB0266 METHOTREXATE AND CARDIOVASCULAR RISK IN RHEUMATIC DISEASES:A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

2021

Background:The management of inflammatory rheumatic disease has evolved in the last decade with the importance of the management of comorbidities. Methotrexate is the cornerstone of inflammatory rheumatic disease management, but its cardiovascular effects are still poorly understoodObjectives:To assess the cardiovascular impact of methotrexate in inflammatory rheumatic disease. Methods:A systematic review of the literature, following the prisma recommandations, was performed on the PubMed and Embase databases with the following keywords: (“Methotrexate”) AND (“cardiovascular”). We included papers written in English and including patients older than 18 years.Results:570 references were identi…

Magnetic resonance in isolated noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium

2010

Abstract Non-compaction of the ventricular myocardium (LCVM) is a rare disorder of myocardial morphogenesis usually diagnosed in paediatric age. The diagnosis was echocardiographically made on the basis of a reported spongeous/compacted ratio >2 in one or more segments of the left ventricle during the diastolic period. We aimed to test the diagnostic accuracy of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging in distinguishing pathological left ventricular non-compaction. Methods We collected a consecutive series of 8 patients, 5 males and 3 females, with a mean age of 14.9 years with non-compaction of left ventricular myocardium. All patients were admitted in our divisions of cardiology. I…

PWE-139 Further Validation of Terminal Peptide of Procollagen Iii (PIIINP) for the Detection and Assessment of Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis in Patien…

2013

Introduction PIIINP has recently been shown to discriminate between simple steatosis (SS) and NASH both in patients without advanced fibrosis and in patients with all degrees of fibrosis 1 . In this study we validated PIIINP as a biomarker of NASH in a cohort of patients with biopsy proven NAFLD and evaluated its performance at the proposed diagnostic thresholds. Methods 71 patients with NAFLD and no evidence of other liver disease were included in this study. Liver biopsies were performed on all patients and analysed by a expert liver histopathologist. All liver biopsies were of suitable size for analysis (> 12mm and > 5 portal tracts) and classified in a dichotomous manner into those with…
