On-board Energy Consumption Assessment for Symbolic Execution Models on Embedded Devices
2020
Internet of Things (IoT) applications operate in several domains while requiring seamless integration among heterogeneous objects. Regardless of the specific platform and context, IoT applications demand high energy efficiency. Adopting resource-constrained embedded devices for IoT applications means ensuring low power consumption, low maintenance costs and possibly longer battery life. Meeting these requirements is particularly arduous as programmers are not able to monitor the energy consumption of their own software during development or when applications are finally deployed. In this paper, we discuss on-board real-time energy evaluation of both hardware and software during the developm…
Rejection odds and rejection ratios: A proposal for statistical practice in testing hypotheses
2016
Much of science is (rightly or wrongly) driven by hypothesis testing. Even in situations where the hypothesis testing paradigm is correct, the common practice of basing inferences solely on p-values has been under intense criticism for over 50 years. We propose, as an alternative, the use of the odds of a correct rejection of the null hypothesis to incorrect rejection. Both pre-experimental versions (involving the power and Type I error) and post-experimental versions (depending on the actual data) are considered. Implementations are provided that range from depending only on the p-value to consideration of full Bayesian analysis. A surprise is that all implementations -- even the full Baye…
Multi-aperture beamforming for automated large structure inspection using ultrasonic phased arrays
2019
Increasing the inspection quality and speed is essential in manufacturing applications, especially for large structures (e.g. modern aircrafts). Traditional ultrasonic manual scanning can be comprehensive, but lacks repeatability and is time-consuming. Several robotic non-destructive testing systems have been developed in recent years. Although high inspection rates have been achieved by the use of robotic arms, there is the need to furtherly increase the inspection speeds, to cope with the current industrial demands. For systems delivering robotic ultrasonic inspection through phased array probes, the current bottleneck is given by the time required to electrically fire all elements of the…
Pseidogadījumu virkņu izveide ar lineāro nobīdes reģistru un to dešifrēšana
2021
Darbā tiek apskatītas lineāro nobīdes reģistru veidotās virknes un to nejaušība. Praktiskajā daļā tiek apskatīts pseidogadījumu virkņu veidošana dažādos garumos, to uzlaušanas un raksturīgo polinomu atrašanas laikietilpīgums.

Analysis of the structural quality of the CASD-NMR 2013 entries
2015
We performed a comprehensive structure validation of both automated and manually generated structures of the 10 targets of the CASD-NMR-2013 effort. We established that automated structure determination protocols are capable of reliably producing structures of comparable accuracy and quality to those generated by a skilled researcher, at least for small, single domain proteins such as the ten targets tested. The most robust results appear to be obtained when NOESY peak lists are used either as the primary input data or to augment chemical shift data without the need to manually filter such lists. A detailed analysis of the long-range NOE restraints generated by the different programs from t…
Tributyltin affects phagocytic activity of Ciona intestinalis hemocytes
1995
Organotin compounds have been used in marine anti-fouling paints as biocides. Because tunicates are vulnerable to these compounds in their natural habitats, we used Ciona intestinalis to establish an assay for phagocytosis in vitro of yeast by hemocytes after exposure to different concentrations (0.0015, 0.015, 0.15 and 1.5 microM) of four organotin compounds: tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPT), dibutyltin (DBT) and diphenyltin (DPT). To evaluate the phagocytic activity, we used a method based on fluorescence excitation of yeast pre-treated with eosin-Y. The percentage of phagocytosis decreased from 45.1 +/- 3.49 to 22.4 +/- 5.14 at 1.5 microM of TBT (P0.001); it was significantly reduce…
The excellent biocompatibility and negligible immune response of the titanium heterometallic MOF MUV-10
2021
The Ti-Ca heterometallic MOF MUV-10 exhibits good dispersibility in phosphate buffer and low phosphate-induced degradation in comparison to other MOF systems. It induces no cytotoxicity towards cells of the immune system and no inmune response, making it an attractive candidate for biomedical applications and demonstrating its safe use for other applications.
Biocompatibility of alginates for grafting: impact of alginate molecular weight.
2003
Optimising microencapsulation technology towards the effective clinical transplantation has created the need for highly biocompatible alginates. Therefore, in this study the biocompatibility of different beads prepared from alginates with varying average molecular weight was examined. In some experiments the beads were covered with a multilayer membrane surrounded by an alginate layer. First of all, we found that beads made of a lower weight average alginate elicted a much stronger fibrotic response compared to beads made of a higher weight average alginate (LV-alginate > MV-alginate). The results were confirmed by the observation that the extent of tissue fibrosis was significantly increas…
New gellan gum-graft-poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) copolymers as promising bioinks: Synthesis and characterization
2020
This research focused on the aim of tackling the urgent demand of printable biomaterials, hence we synthetized and characterized three gellan gum-graft-poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) copolymers (GGm-PLGA a, b and c) which differed in the graft substitution degree. We investigated the effect of the polyester chain grafted onto hydrophilic backbone of gellan gum in terms of physicochemical properties and the ability of the system to print 3D cell laden constructs. In particular, we evaluated thermo-rheological, ionotropic crosslinking, shear thinning, swelling and stability properties of these copolymers and their derived biomaterials and findings related to the degree of functionalization.
