Selected Age-Related Disorders

2013

Aged human individuals are frequently affected by various age-related impairments and disorders at once (multimorbidity) making it difficult to investigate and understand the link between aging as key risk factor and single syndromes. In some chapters of this book links have been identified between molecular mechanisms of aging and the pathogenesis of human disorders in the elderly. Here, the focus is put on Alzheimers disease (AD) and cancer. While cancer in many cases can successfully be treated and sometimes even cured by pharmacology and/or surgery, AD is still an incurable deadly disease. Like almost no other disorder the onset of AD is strictly associated with higher age and experienc…

Outcomes of Mismatched Related Allogeneic Stem Cell Transplantation for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: A Retrospective Study on Behalf of the Chronic …

2016

Abstract Introduction: Allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is a treatment for CLL that can give long disease control. Even with the availability of kinase and BCL2 inhibitors, HCT is still performed in fit patients (pts) with high-risk CLL. Almost exclusively, outcomes on matched related and unrelated donor transplantations in CLL have been published. Recently, mismatched related donors are gaining interest because of the better outcome of haploidentical HCT with post-transplantation cyclophosphamide (PTCY). Methods: All pts with CLL who received a first allogeneic HCT with a mismatched related donor and whose data were available in the EBMT registry were analyzed. Medi…

Lebermetastasen kolorektaler Karzinome - wie oft kann man operieren?

2007

Recurrent liver metastases of colorectal carcinoma are frequent. The repeat hepatectomy is superior to other therapeutic options. In about 20 % of patients with recurrent liver metastases a complete resection (R 0) is possible. The morbidity of repeat hepatectomy is similar to that of first hepatectomy. The 5-year survival rate after repeat hepatectomy ranges between 30 and 40 %. Often in the follow-up additional operations become necessary for extrahepatic recurrencies. For determination of the optimal therapy an interdisciplinary approach must be chosen.

Adjunctive Brivaracetam in Focal Epilepsy: Real-World Evidence from the BRIVAracetam add-on First Italian netwoRk STudy (BRIVAFIRST)

2021

Background: In randomized controlled trials, add-on brivaracetam (BRV) reduced seizure frequency in patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy. Studies performed in a naturalistic setting are a useful complement to characterize the drug profile. Objective: This multicentre study assessed the effectiveness and tolerability of adjunctive BRV in a large population of patients with focal epilepsy in the context of real-world clinical practice. Methods: The BRIVAFIRST (BRIVAracetam add-on First Italian netwoRk STudy) was a retrospective, multicentre study including adult patients prescribed adjunctive BRV. Patients with focal epilepsy and 12-month follow-up were considered. Main outcomes includ…

This study was conducted to understand the importance of partnership and the role of the accompanying person in childbirth in the context of COVID-19 in Latvia. Methods: A mixed method study with sequential explanatory design was conducted from 26 July to 30 October 2020. The quantitative study consisted of a behavioral cross-sectional online survey with convenience sampling.
