The Role of Translation and EU-Texts in the English BA Programme : Exploring Hungarian College Graduates' Work Experiences and Views

2015

Despite recent convincing arguments emphasizing the benefits of using translation in foreign language learning and teaching, there is little empirical research focusing on existing educational practices. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the case of an English bachelor’s programme at a Hungarian college, which has integrated translation and specialised EU-texts into the curriculum in a systematic way in an attempt to stay abreast of the current global social transformations and address local needs. The participants of the survey were graduates of the English BA programme who have completed the optional EU specialisation module. The research aimed to find out about graduates’…

Register Variation Across English Pharmaceutical Texts: A Corpus-driven Study of Keywords, Lexical Bundles and Phrase Frames in Patient Information L…

2013

Abstract This study constitutes an initial step towards filling a gap in corpus linguistics studies of linguistic and phraseological variation across English pharmaceutical texts, in particular in terms of recurrent linguistic patterns. The study conducted from a register- perspective ( Biber & Conrad, 2009 ), which employs both quantitative and qualitative research procedures, aims to provide a corpus-driven description of vocabulary and phraseology, namely key words, lexical bundles, and phrase frames, used in patient information leaflets and summaries of product characteristics (represented by 463 and 146 texts, respectively) written originally in English and collected in two domain-spec…

Settore L-FIL-LET/14 - Critica Letteraria E Letterature ComparateBetween late XIX and the first 30 years of the XX Century some Italians immigrated to the United States – such as Bernardino Ciambelli Italo Stanco Garibaldi Marto Lapolla Louis Forgione Michael Fiaschetti and Prosper Buranelli – wrote some texts that starting from the typical features of Mystery (serialization and incardination of the fabula in a specific urban context) together with some of the characteristic elements of the Hard boiled never lose sight of the peculiar 'mission' of political economic and social denunciation. Taking the political and social problems as the primary key of their works these writers want to remove the defamatory role attributed by the public opinion fomented by the press to Italian immigrated community. Their works don’t have the main intent to stage detectives that can solve a case or unmask a culprit but rather they aim to denounce social distortions corruption and injustices suffered by an entire community and not least to indicate the picture of what on the contrary that same society could have been.

Easy-to-read Texts for Students with Intellectual Disability: Linguistic Factors Affecting Comprehension

2013

Background: The use of ‘easy-to-read’ materials for people with intellectual disabilities has become very widespread but their effectiveness has scarcely been evaluated. In this study, the framework provided by Kintsch's Construction–Integration Model (1988) is used to examine (i) the reading comprehension levels of different passages of the Spanish text that have been designed following easy-to-read guidelines and (ii) the relationships between reading comprehension (literal and inferential) and various linguistic features of these texts. Method: Sixteen students with mild intellectual disability and low levels of reading skills were asked to read easy-to-read texts and then complete a rea…

Why are there no comprehensively digital scholarly editions of classical texts?

2018

Currently, no 'canonical' classical text with a multi-testimonial tradition has a digital scholarly edition based on a complete digital transcription of all primary sources, and on the automated collation of those transcriptions. Most classicists simply do not feel that they need such editions. I argue that this is ultimately due to the 'canonization' of the corpus of classical texts. Classicists are more focussed on the 'Text' than on the documents (manuscripts) and their texts: they tend not to consider the textual variance in the manuscripts as culturally meaningful in itself, but merely instrumental in view of the constitutio textus. I suspect that we will not have 'comprehensively digi…

Interaction and use of technologies in teaching and learning processes

2020

"Nice, refreshing, excellent that [it] is our corporate language" : a case study on self-efficacy and EFL in a Nordic online trading bank

2017

Englannin kielen merkitys suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa on kasvanut viime vuosikymmenten aikana nopealla tahdilla. Se näkyy monella eri osa-alueella: niin kulttuurissa, politiikassa kuin työmarkkinoilla. Nykyään englannin kielen osaaminen on edellytys työntekijälle.

On the participatory agency of texts: Using institutional forms in performance appraisal interviews

2020

Abstract Drawing on studies of the performative effects and agency of texts in organizations, the paper investigates how the agency of texts figures through their participatory status in interaction. The empirical data for the study consist of video-recorded performance appraisal interviews in a Finnish public organization in which the interaction relies heavily on an appraisal form. The data are analyzed through a sequential analysis that draws on multimodal conversation analysis and ethnographic knowledge. The analysis shows that the human participants orient to three different acts that are inscribed in the textual document: 1) presenting demands for the participants; 2) offering topics …

Coordinated Interpersonal Behaviour in Collective Dance Improvisation: The Aesthetics of Kinaesthetic Togetherness

2018

International audience; Collective dance improvisation (e.g., traditional and social dancing, contact improvisation) is a participatory, relational and embodied art form which eschews standard concepts in aesthetics. We present our ongoing research into the mechanisms underlying the lived experience of "togetherness" associated with such practices. Togetherness in collective dance improvisation is kinaesthetic (based on movement and its perception), and so can be simultaneously addressed from the perspective of the performers and the spectators, and be measured. We utilise these multiple levels of description: the first-person, phenomenological level of personal experiences, the third-perso…
