Slope threshold in rill flow resistance

The applicability of a theoretical rill flow resistance equation, based on the integration of a power velocity distribution, was tested using measurements carried out in mobile and fixed bed rills, shaped on plots having different slopes (9, 14, 15, 18, 22, 24, 25 and 26%) and soil textures (clay fractions ranging from 32.7% to 73% and silt of 19.9–30.9%), and flume measurements available in the literature. Estimating flow resistance in steep slope rills

Recent research recognized that the slope of 18% can be used to distinguish between the ‘gentle slope’ case and that of ‘steep slope’ for the detected differences in hydraulic variables (flow depth, velocity, Reynolds number, Froude number) and those representatives of sediment transport (flow transport capacity, actual sediment load). Texture advection on discontinuous flows

Texture advection techniques, which transport textures using a velocity field, are used to visualize the dynamics of a flow on a triangle mesh. Some flow phenomena lead to velocity fields with discontinuities that cause the deformation of the texture which is not properly controlled by these techniques. We propose a method to detect and visualize discontinuities on a flow, keeping consistent texture advection at both sides of the discontinuity. The method handles the possibility that the discontinuity travels across the domain of the flow with arbitrary velocity, estimating its speed with least-squares approximation. Hydrogen bonded ferroelectric liquid crystal gels in freely suspended film geometry

We study freely suspended films of smectic C* liquid crystalline gels by means of polarizing microscopy. The gel point of the system is determined from the suppression of flow in the films. The network of hydrogen bonds is mechanically fragile but stabilizes orientation patterns of the sample, in particular it stores the texture present during gelation. Electro-optical experiments are performed to study the dynamics of the sample reorientation under the influence of in-plane electric fields. Mesogen orientation and optical properties can be switched in electric fields of a few kV m−1. After removal of electric fields, the network restores the ‘frozen-in’ texture. Equilibrium and disequilibrium degassing of a phonolitic melt (Vesuvius AD 79 “white pumice”) simulated by decompression experiments

Abstract Equilibrium and disequilibrium degassing of a volatile phase from a magma of K-phonolitic composition was investigated to assess its behavior upon ascent. Decompression experiments were conducted in Ar-pressurized externally heated pressure vessels at superliquidus temperature (1050 °C), in the pressure range 10–200 MPa using pure water as fluid phase. All experiments were equilibrated at 200 MPa and then decompressed to lower pressures with rates varying from 0.0028 to 4.8 MPa/s. Fully automatic, real-time detection of facial gestures from generic video

A technique for the detection of facial gestures from low resolution video sequences is presented. The technique builds upon the automatic 3D head tracker formulation of [M. La Cascia et al., 2000]. The tracker is based on the registration of a texture-mapped cylindrical model. Facial gesture analysis is performed in the texture map by assuming that the residual registration error can be modeled as a linear combination of facial motion templates. Radiomics Analyses of Schwannomas in the Head and Neck: A Preliminary Analysis

The purpose of this preliminary study was to evaluate the differences in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-based radiomics analysis between cerebellopontine angle neurinomas and schwannomas originating from other locations in the neck spaces. Twenty-six patients with available MRI exams and head and neck schwannomas were included. Lesions were manually segmented on the precontrast and postcontrast T1 sequences. The radiomics features were extracted by using PyRadiomics software, and a total of 120 radiomics features were obtained from each segmented tumor volume. Fast, Reliable Head Tracking Under Varying Illumination

An improved technique for 3D head tracking under varying illumination conditions is proposed. The head is modeled as a texture mapped cylinder. Tracking is formulated as an image registration problem in the cylinder's texture map image. To solve the registration problem in the presence of lighting variation and head motion, the residual error of registration is modeled as a linear combination of texture warping templates and orthogonal illumination templates. Head Tracking via Robust Registration in Texture Map Images.

A novel method for 3D head tracking in the presence of large head rotations and facial expression changes is described. Tracking is formulated in terms of color image registration in the texture map of a 3D surface model. Model appearance is recursively updated via image mosaicking in the texture map as the head orientation varies. The resulting dynamic texture map provides a stabilized view of the face that can be used as input to many existing 2D techniques for face recognition, facial expressions analysis, lip reading, and eye tracking.
