International Scientific Conference "Socio-Political and Religious Ideas and Movements in the 20th-21st Centuries", Latvia, Riga, 4-5 October 2018 : …
2018
The conference facilitated the exchange of ideas and the results of the latest studies on the reciprocity and significance of religious and socially political ideas (ideologies) in contemporary society. In the modern-day ever-changing political situation, an increasing danger to the safety and stability of society is caused by the manipulations of the seemingly traditional conceptions of ethical, religious and cultural values evident in the public discourse and media space. Under the impact of global processes, social anxiety and ethical disorientation facilitate a dangerous trend to trust the populist ideologies and quasi-religious ideas, as well as increase the level of radicalisation of …
The Firstborn of Death: Monotheism and the Mythology of Death in Job 18
2019
AbstractJob 18 depicts the destruction of the wicked as a kind of ambush by “the firstborn of death.” Much of the discussion of this passage has centered on this figure’s identification, and whether one should look primarily to Ugaritic or Mesopotamian mythological traditions for its background. Yet the passage as a whole concludes with a reference to a single “God,” knowledge of whom is determinative for human fate. This raises a basic question concerning the relation between “God” and the “firstborn of death.” Through a close comparison with the Ugaritic Baal Cycle and the Neo-Assyrian Underworld Vision on the one hand, and Job 5 and Deuteronomy 32 on the other, this paper argues that “th…

2017
The Author’s aim is to highlight the limits of monist metaphysics which underpin the paradigm of Secular Humanism. In fact, all forms of monism consider good and evil either as internal momentums to the logic of development of the world, or as mere illusions within the evolutionary process. Can tragedies as the Holocaust be interpreted by such a monistic approach? The distinction between ‘polar opposition’ and ‘logic of contradiction’ is introduced by Romano Guardini. This is based on a creationistic metaphysic and it is useful to show that our practical-moral investigation is legitimated only by a theist approach. By considering good and evil as two aspect with mutual implications, monisti…
I «nomi» degli dèi greci. I poteri della denominazione nella riconfigurazione di un pantheon
2012
This paper analyzes a matter of polytheistic semantics in the Greek Classical age since the process of naming gods and heroes. Two case studies are compared. The first focuses on the Homeric Hymn to Apollo where the examination of different forms of poetic proferation of divine allows to explain strategies and procedures for the integration of a new deity in the pantheon. The second case study aims to examine in the Euripides drama Erechtheus how changes in the naming of Gods could reflect a new political situation leading to a functional and cultual redefinition of tutelary gods in Athens.
Triune brain's mechanisms of thought and behavior, death awareness, and origin of religion in early humans.
2008
According to ethological point of view, the most important religious displays consist in the gathering of several human groups who perform repeated and prolonged demonstrations of submission toward dominant individuals. These dominant individuals take different forms in each culture but they share some characteristics including an immense power. For what concerns the genesis, in human mind, of the ideas of such immense power beings, some scholars, as Freud (Totem und tabu, 1913), felt that such beings could be the projection result of the figure of the “primordial horde’s father” in a super- human world. In The Naked Ape (1967), Morris has proposed a sort of biological updating of the Freud…
Evolutionary and neurobiological bases of theism
2009
According to evolutionary psychology, all human behaviours are a product of internal mechanisms in conjunction with inputs that cause activation of those mechanisms: no mechanism, no behaviour; no input, no behaviour. From an ethological point of view, the most important religious behaviours consist in the gathering of humans who perform demonstrations of submission toward supernatural individuals endowed with an immense power. About the genesis of the ideas of such beings, Freud felt that they could be the projection result of the “primordial horde’s father” in a super-human world. Subsequently Morris has proposed that divine beings risult from the projection of the figure of the dominant …
How to Survive the Anthropocene: Adaptive Atheism and the Evolution of Homo deiparensis
2015
Published version of an article from the journal: Religions. Also available from the publisher: http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/rel6020724 Why is it so easy to ignore the ecological and economic crises of the Anthropocene? This article unveils some of the religious biases whose covert operation facilitates the repression or rejection of warnings about the consequences of extreme climate change and excessive capitalist consumption. The evolved defaults that are most relevant for our purposes here have to do with mental credulity toward religious content (beliefs about supernatural agents) and with social congruity in religious contexts (behaviors shaped by supernatural rituals). Learning how to co…
Computer Modeling in Philosophy of Religion
2019
AbstractHow might philosophy of religion be impacted by developments in computational modeling and social simulation? After briefly describing some of the content and context biases that have shaped traditional philosophy of religion, this article provides examples of computational models that illustrate the explanatory power of conceptually clear and empirically validated causal architectures informed by the bio-cultural sciences. It also outlines some of the material implications of these developments for broader metaphysical and metaethical discussions in philosophy. Computer modeling and simulation can contribute to the reformation of the philosophy of religion in at least three ways: b…
