Patients' readiness for dietary change at the beginning of counselling: a transtheoretical model-based assessment.

Background  The purpose of this study was to explore patients' readiness for dietary change within a theoretical framework of the transtheoretical model. The patients were recently diagnosed to have type 2 diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. We discuss the theoretical aspects of appropriate dietary counselling strategies from a standpoint of patient-specific stages of change. Exotic hyperons: Theoretical status and search perspectives in hyperon beam facilities

The theoretical models that predict the existence of exotic hyperons made of more than three quarks are reviewed. We present the properties of exotic hyperons with strangenessS=−1 (quark contents $$sqqq\bar q$$ ),S=−2 ( $$ssqq\bar q$$ ) andS=−3 ( $$sssq\bar q$$ ) predicted by the sum rules for reggeon-particle scattering amplitudes. The inclusive cross sections for the production of these hyperons in hyperon-proton interactions are calculated. The cross sections turn out to be of the order of millibarns, thus opening a good perspective to encounter such exotic hyperons in the available hyperon beam facilities at CERN and FNAL. Predicting limiting 'free sugar' consumption using an integrated model of health behavior.

Excess intake of 'free sugars' is a key predictor of chronic disease, obesity, and dental ill health. Given the importance of determining modifiable predictors of free sugar-related dietary behaviors, we applied the integrated behavior change model to predict free sugar limiting behaviors. The model includes constructs representing 'reasoned' or deliberative processes that lead to action (e.g., social cognition constructs, intentions), and constructs representing 'non-conscious' or implicit processes (e.g., implicit attitudes, behavioral automaticity) as predictors of behavior. Load Carrying Capacity of Glass Columns with Rectangular, T and X Transverse Cross-sections

In this study, the load carrying capacities of glass columns with rectangular, T and X cross-sections having different lengths were calculated. The proposed analytical procedure allows to calculate the load carrying capacity associated with strength of transverse cross-section including local and global flexural and/or torsional buckling phenomenon. Moreover, initial imperfections and time dependant effects, the latter associated with the viscoelastic behaviour of interlayer (PVB), were included in the model as suggested in the literature. Intrinsic volatility of synaptic connections — a challenge to the synaptic trace theory of memory

According to the synaptic trace theory of memory, activity-induced changes in the pattern of synaptic connections underlie the storage of information for long periods. In this framework, the stability of memory critically depends on the stability of the underlying synaptic connections. Surprisingly however, synaptic connections in the living brain are highly volatile, which poses a fundamental challenge to the synaptic trace theory. Splitting of surface-related phonons in Raman spectra of self-assembled GaN nanowires

cited By 2; International audience; Micro Raman spectroscopy studies have been performed on GaN nanowires grown by Plasma-Assisted Molecular Beam Epitaxy on Silicon (111) substrate. From the analysis of experimental data, the emergence of a two peaks band located near 700 cm-1 has been attributed to the Raman scattering by surface-related phonons. We have analyzed the surface character of these two modes by changing the dielectric constant of the exterior medium and some experimental parameters. Experimental realization of a new type of crystalline undulator.

2014

A new scheme of making crystalline undulators was recently proposed and investigated theoretically by Andriy Kostyuk, concluding that a new type of crystalline undulator would be not only viable, but better than the previous scheme. This article describes the first experimental measurement of such a crystalline undulator, produced by using Si(1-x)Ge(x)-graded composition and measured at the Mainzer Microtron facility at beam energies of 600 and 855 MeV. We also present theoretical models developed to compare with the experimental data.
