PLZT—Synthesis, sintering and ceramics microstructure

2006

Abstract Producing of PLZT powders by original two-stage co-precipitation method from mixed solution of inorganic salts ZrOCl 2 ·8H 2 O, TiCl 4 , La(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O, Pb(NO 3 ) 2 , was carried out. The sequence of phases formed during PLZT synthesis has been studied by X-ray and DTA analysis. Ceramic samples were prepared by two-stage hot-pressing technology. Dielectric, ferroelectric and optical properties have been measured. Ceramic microstructures were studied by SEM with energy dispersive analytical capability (EDX). The fine-grained microstructure was quite uniform with the average grain size of 5–7 μm, without internal or grain boundary porosity. The optical transmittance of ceramic p…

Solid State NMR Spectroscopy Investigation of the Molecular Structure of Epoxy Based Materials Cured in Different Conditions

2012

In this work two epoxy resin model systems, whose monomers are typically used in structural composites, were thermally cured in different cure conditions in order to obtain different cross-linking densities. Their molecular structures were investigated through solid state NMR spectroscopy in order to correlate them to the cure process conditions used and the results were discussed in the light of the dynamical mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) performed.

Quantification of low levels of amorphous content in maltitol

2004

A method for the quantification of low levels of amorphous content of maltitol with hyper-DSC (high speed DSC) was developed. The method is based on the fact that the change of specific heat ( Cp) at the glass transition is linearly proportional to the amorphous content. Twelve synthetic mixtures with various degrees of crystalline and amorphous maltitol were prepared. Cp was determined at both fictive and

Cobalt aluminate spinel-mullite composites synthesized by sol-gel method

1997

Abstract CoAl 2 O 4 spinel-mullite composites were prepared by double substitution of Al by Ti and Ni in stoichiometric 3:2 mullite. Gels with compositions 3(Al 2 − 2 x Co x Ti x O 3 )·2SiO 2 (x = 0.025, 0.05 and 0.2) and 3(Al 2 − 2 x M x O 3 )·2SiO 2 (x = 0.05; M = Co 2+ or Ti 4+ ) were synthesized by sol-gel techniques. The structure of the gels was investigated by infra-red spectroscopy. Heating gels at 750 °C produced an amorphous silicoaluminate network. The reaction sequence was investigated by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. All samples crystallized at temperatures lower than 1000 °C from the amorphous state. Al-Si spinel and/or …

Influence of vinyltriethoxysilane concentration on structural and luminescent characteristics of cerium doped yttrium based silicate phosphors

2015

Abstract Cerium doped yttrium silicates phosphors (YSO:Ce) were prepared by gel combustion using vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEOS) as silicon sources along with aspartic acid as fuel and yttrium-cerium nitrate as oxidizer. The study presents the influence of VTEOS amount in the synthesis mixture on the structural and luminescent characteristics of silicate phosphors. The understanding of precursor׳s decomposition was achieved on the basis of thermal analysis in association with gas evolved analysis. XRD, FTIR and XPS were used to reveal the structural changes that occur with VTEOS molar amount variation from 1 to 3 mol. It was found that the main crystalline phase was X2-Y 2 SiO 5 . The luminesc…

Mechanical, Thermomechanical and Reprocessing Behavior of Green Composites from Biodegradable Polymer and Wood Flour

2015

The rising concerns in terms of environmental protection and the search for more versatile polymer-based materials have led to an increasing interest in the use of polymer composites filled with natural organic fillers (biodegradable and/or coming from renewable resources) as a replacement for traditional mineral inorganic fillers. At the same time, the recycling of polymers is still of fundamental importance in order to optimize the utilization of available resources, reducing the environmental impact related to the life cycle of polymer-based items. Green composites from biopolymer matrix and wood flour were prepared and the investigation focused on several issues, such as the effect of r…

Safely Dissolvable and Healable Active Packaging Films Based on Alginate and Pectin

2019

Extensive usage of long-lasting petroleum based plastics for short-lived application such as packaging has raised concerns regarding their role in environmental pollution. In this research, we have developed active, healable, and safely dissolvable alginate-pectin based biocomposites that have potential applications in food packaging. The morphological study revealed the rough surface of these biocomposite films. Tensile properties indicated that the fabricated samples have mechanical properties in the range of commercially available packaging films while possessing excellent healing efficiency. Biocomposite films exhibited higher hydrophobicity properties compared to neat alginate films. T…

Thermal decomposition of chromite spinel with chlorite admixture

2008

Abstract The behaviour of minerals in a South African chromite ore during the increasing of the temperature has been studied. Firstly, the changes produced during the ignition process have been examined by means of thermal and differential analysis (TGA–DTA) until 1200 °C. The characterization of the initial mineral and those obtained after heating at several temperatures in room atmosphere has been performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Moreover, voltammetric analyses have allowed to determine the variation of the iron oxidation degree in the studied materials. Light microscopy was applied to find more information about the different phases by their colour. During the heating, a wide range …
