On the formation of inclusion complexes at the solid/liquid interface of anchored temperature-responsive PNIPAAM diblock copolymers with γ-cyclodextr…

2017

The thermal responsive behavior of adsorbed layers of diblock copolymers of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAM) and poly((3-acrylamidopropyl)trimethylammonium chloride) (PAMPTMA(+)) with γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) at the solid/liquid interface has been investigated using three in situ techniques: null ellipsometry, quartz–crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, and neutron reflectometry. The measurements provided information about the adsorbed amounts, the layer thickness, hydration and viscoelastic properties, and the interfacial structure and composition. The copolymers adsorb to silica with the cationic PAMPTMA(+) blocks sitting as anchors in a flat conformation and the PNIPAAM ch…

Evaluation of advanced silica packings for the separation of biopolymers by high-perforamnce liquid chromatography

1987

Non-porous monodisperse 1.5-μm silicas were allowed to react with (A) and (B) N-acetylaminopropyltriethoxysilane to generate bonded phases useful in high-performance hydrophobic-interaction chromatography (HIC). Differences in the selectivity were observed between he amide and the ether phase. Peak capacities between 10 and 30 were achieved for several proteins with the amide and ether phase packed into columns of 36 × 8 mm I.D. and elution of the proteins under chromatographic conditions in which the gradient volume, VG, was held constant by varying the gradient time between 20 and 2.5 min and the flow-rate between 0.5 and 4.0 ml/min. The S values derived from the dependences of log k′ on …

Evaluation of thermoresponsive properties and biocompatibility of polybenzofulvene aggregates for leuprolide delivery

2012

Abstract In this study, a polybenzofulvene derivative named poly-6-MOEG-9-BF3k, was evaluated as polymeric material for the production of injectable thermoresponsive nano-aggregates able to load low molecular weight peptidic drug, like the anticancer leuprolide. Thermoresponsive behavior of poly-6-MOEG-9-BF3k was studied in aqueous media by evaluating scattering intensity variations by means of DLS in function of temperature. Zeta potential measurements and SEM observations were also carried out. Moreover, critical aggregation temperature of the poly-6-MOEG-9-BF3k polymer was evaluated by pyrene fluorescence analysis. Then, the ability of prepared thermoresponsive aggregates to protect this…

Temporal control of xyloglucan self-assembly into layered structures by radiation-induced degradation

2016

Partially degalactosylated xyloglucan from tamarind seeds (Deg-XG) is a very appealing biopolymer for the production of in situ gelling systems at physiological temperature. In this work, we observe that the morphology of hydrogels evolves towards high degrees of structural organization with time, yielding to dense stacks of thin membranes within 24 h of incubation at 37 °C. We also explore the possibility offered by gamma irradiation of controlling the time scale of this phenomenon, the final morphology and mechanical properties of the system. Structural and molecular modifications of Deg-XG with dose are investigated by FTIR, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and rotational viscosimetry. The…

Tailoring Properties of Carbon Nanotube Dispersions and Nanocomposites Using Temperature-Responsive Copolymers of Pyrene-Modified Poly(N-cyclopropyla…

2010

Despite their immense potential, the ability to control the dispersion and microstructure of carbon nanotubes remains a hurdle for their widespread use. Stimuli-responsive polymers show conformational changes with an applied external stimulus (pH, temperature, light, etc.). The dispersion of carbon nanotubes by thermoresponsive polymers is shown to enable the macroscopic properties of aqueous suspensions to be tailored as a function of temperature. This work presents the synthesis, characterization, and use of temperature-responsive poly(N-cyclopropylacrylamide) (PNCPA) polymers containing 1, 3, and 5 mol % pyrene-bearing repeat units to tailor the dispersion state of single-walled carbon n…

How Structure-Related Collapse Mechanisms Determine Nanoscale Inhomogeneities in Thermoresponsive Polymers

2012

Continuous wave electron paramagnetic resonance (CW EPR) spectroscopy on the amphiphilic spin probe TEMPO in solutions of selectively chosen functional, thermoresponsive poly(propylene oxide) (PPO)- and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based copolymers of both linear and branched structure is used to elucidate their host–guest interactions and inverse phase transitions. Three different fundamental types of host–guest interactions between probes and polymers could be correlated to the phase transition mechanisms (supported by MD simulations), evidencing that these proceed via nanoscale inhomogeneities of the polymers. Because of their ability to host small amphiphilic guest molecules, thermorespon…
