Postoperative Lens Position Preoperatively Determined by Scheimpflug Photography

The position of the artificial lens has an important influence on refractive power calculation. We compared the position of the crystalline lens with that of the artificial lens after cataract surgery by means of Scheimpflug photography. A difference in position of approximately 0.8 mm in the anterior direction could be determined.

Mapping of the human visual cortex using image-guided transcranial magnetic stimulation

We describe a protocol using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to systematically map the visual sensations induced by focal and non-invasive stimulation of the human occipital cortex. TMS is applied with a figure of eight coil to 28 positions arranged in a 2x2-cm grid over the occipital area. A digitizing tablet connected to a PC computer running customized software, and audio and video recording are used for detailed and accurate data collection and analysis of evoked phosphenes. Strength training and neuromuscular function in elderly people with total knee endoprosthesis

The effects of 1 year of intensive strength training on neuromuscular function were studied in elderly people operated for total endoprosthesis (n=30) divided into 3 groups: training pup 1 (TG1, n=11), training pup 2 (TG2, n=10) and control group (CG, n=9). After the operation, TG1 and TG2 trained every second day and the training was controlled by training diaries, and CG performed only conventional exercises by themselves. The overall volume of training in TG2 was 30% greater than in TG1. For the first time it has been proven that cholest-4-ene-3-one is an endogenous constituent of adrenal tissue. Concentrations of cholestenone in quartered rat adrenals after 3 hours of in vitro incubation were comparable to those of progesterone. However, from specific radioactivities of tissue cholesterol and progesterone and from those of tissue cholestenone and progesterone after incubations with either 4-14C-cholesterol or 4-14C-cholestenone it has been concluded that, at best, cholestenone plays a minimal role as a C27-intermediate of corticosteroid biosynthesis.

“Unlucky punch”: unexpected annular rupture during TAVR and successful treatment

Although rare, annular rupture in TAVR is a feared and often unpredictable complication with relevant impact on in-hospital prognosis. Severe annular calcification is a common risk factor for annular rupture. We report on a case of annular rupture during TAVR with a balloon-expanded prosthesis in the absence of any annular calcification in the planning CT scan and illustrate the proposed pathomechanism as well as its successful immediate surgical management.
Pyogenic granuloma in relation to dental implants: Clinical and histopathological findings

Background: The occurrence of pyogenic granuloma in association to dental implants is rare and only five cases have been reported in the literature. Material and Methods: Patients charts were analyzed to select patients who had been diagnosed for pyogenic granuloma and its association with dental implants had been evaluated. The clinical status of the dental implants and the prosthesis had also been assessed. Results: Clinical and histopathological diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma had been reached for soft mass growth in association with dental implants in 10 patients. Introduction: Type III endoleaks post-endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR) warrant treatment because they increase pressure within the aneurysm sac leading to increased rupture risk. The treatment may be difficult with regular endovascular devices.
