Intensity-correlated spiking of infrared and ultraviolet emission from sodium vapors

2021

The directional spiking infrared and ultraviolet emission from sodium vapors excited to the 4D5/2 level by a continuous-wave resonant laser pump, that constitute a novel feature of the cooperative effects, has been analyzed. Cascade mirrorless lasing at 2207 and 2338 nm on population-inverted transitions and ultraviolet radiation at 330 nm that is generated due to four-wave mixing process demonstrate a high degree of intensity correlation.

Polychromatic, continuous-wave mirrorless lasing from monochromatic pumping of cesium vapor

2019

We report on studies of simultaneous continuous-wave mirrorless lasing on multiple optical transitions, realized by pumping hot cesium vapor with laser light resonant with the 6$S_{1/2}\rightarrow 8$P$_{3/2}$ transition. The multiplicity of decay paths for the excited atoms to their ground state is responsible for the emergence of lasing in a number of transitions, observed here in at least seven wavelengths in the infrared (IR), and at two wavelengths in the blue. We study the properties of the fields generated in the cesium vapor, such as optical power, directionality and optical linewidth.

Twist-Elasticity-Controlled Crystal Emission in Highly Luminescent Polymorphs of Cyano-Substituted Distyrylbenzene (βDCS)

2017

The occurrence of polymorphs in crystals of luminescent π-conjugated organic materials is an intriguing matter, particularly because polymorphs can give rise to widely different broadband and amplified emission properties. Here, a new, highly luminescent polymorph of cyano-substituted distyrylbenzene, being a prominent example of “twist elasticity”—the ability of a molecule to react to external constraints with substantial changes in the torsional coordinates, is investigated. The twist elasticity concept is fully explored here through molecular modeling by comparison of the new polymorph with two known ones exhibiting largely different intra- and intermolecular coordinates. In a second ste…

1.65-μm Er:Yb:YAG diode-pumped laser delivering 80-mJ pulse energy

2005

We demonstrate efficient lasing of bulk diode-pumped Er 31 :Yb 31 :YAG at 1.645 mm. The material is transversely pumped using three quasi-cw 960-nm laser diode arrays in a simple arrangement. In the free-running mode of operation, an output pulse energy of 79 mJ is obtained at 4.7 J of incident optical pump energy. The lasing threshold lies in the range 1.0 to 1.9 J in long-pulse operation, depending on pumping conditions, and optical slope efficiencies of 2.2% to 3.4% were measured with respect to the incident pump energy. Furthermore, initial Q-switching experiments with a Co:MALO saturable absorber yielded pulses of 1.7-mJ energy and 340-ns FWHM duration. As the reported laser setup also…

A methodology for the rapid characterization of Mode II delamination fatigue threshold in FRP composites

2019

Abstract A new methodology to measure the Mode II interlaminar fracture in fatigue for FRP composites is developed. The proposed methodology uses a Modified Transvers Crack Tensile (MTCT) specimen and is able to characterize the near threshold behavior in a robust, easier and significantly faster way than standard procedures. Analytical formulae, able to link the crack growth rate to the load or strain amplitudes, were found and verified, and their importance was explained, in particular, for what concerns the characterisation of the near threshold behavior. Experiments were performed both in load and strain control, while the delamination growth was monitored using different techniques inc…

Threshold Voltage Variability of NROM Memories After Exposure to Ionizing Radiation

2012

Threshold voltage (V-th) behavior of nitride readonly memories (NROMs) was studied after irradiation with photons (gamma-and X-rays), light and heavy ions. Both programmed and nonprogrammed single cells were investigated. The data suggest that two main physical phenomena are contributing to V-th variation and that the V-th loss and the variability can be modeled by a Weibull statistics with a shape parameter k similar to 2.2 regardless of the irradiation species and total dose. The same peculiarities were found in large memory arrays, confirming the results from single-cell studies but with significantly larger statistics. Hence, once the irradiation dose is known, the V-th loss distributio…

Characterization of soft breakdown in thin oxide NMOSFETs based on the analysis of the substrate current

2001

We have investigated the properties of soft breakdown (SBO) in thin oxide (4.5 nm) nMOSFETs with measurements of the gate and substrate leakage currents using the carrier separation technique. We have observed that, at lower gate voltages, the level of the substrate current exhibits a plateau. We propose that the observed plateau is due to the Shockley-Hall-Read (SHR) generation of hole-electron pairs in the space charge region and at the Si-SiO/sub 2/ interface. At higher voltages, the substrate current steeply increases with voltage, due to a tunneling mechanism, trap-assisted or due to a localized effective thinning of the oxide, from the substrate valence band to the gate conduction ban…

Microchip Random Laser based on a disordered TiO2-nanomembranes arrangement

2012

International audience; We developed a new scheme for obtaining coherent random lasing based on a chip consisting of a polymer film doped with Rhodamine 6G, having as scatterers butterfly-like TiO2 nanomembranes (TiO2-NM) supported on a glass substrate. The feedback mechanism for laser action is due to the multiple scattering of light by TiO2-NM rather than provided by localized variations of the refractive index in the polymer film. The above-threshold multiple spikes signature indicative of random laser emission with coherent feedback is confirmed. As nanomembranes are foreseen as new MEMS/NEMS building blocks, a new generation of combined active/passive photonic devices can be envisaged.

Electrical conductivity properties of expanded graphite-polycarbonatediol polyurethane composites

2014

Conductive polymer composites of segmented polycarbonatediol polyurethane and expanded graphite (EG) have been synthesized with different amounts of EG conductive filler (from 0 to 50 wt%). SEM, X-ray diffraction measurements, Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopies demonstrated a homogeneous dispersion of the EG filler in the matrix. The dielectric permittivity of the composites showed an insulator to conductor percolation transition with increase in EG content. Significant changes in the dielectric permittivity take place when the weight fraction of EG is in the range 20–30 wt%. Special attention has been paid to the dependence of the conductivity on frequency, temperature and…

Nd:KGW Laser under Flashlamp-pumping at Repetition Rate up to 50 Hz and Average Power of 70 W (free-lasing and Q-switched mode)

1997

The laser performance of Nd:KGd(WO4)2 crystal or Nd:KGW has been studied under flashlamp-pumping in the free-running and Q-switched mode (with active or passive Q-switching) at repetition rate up to 50 Hz. Maximum output powers respectively of 70 and 30 W were achieved at 1.06 pm with a maximum efficiency of 6%. Free-running emission was also obtained at 1.35 pm with a maximum average power of 24 W and a total efficiency of 2.9% at this wavelength. A comparison with a similar Nd:YAG crystal is given showing a noticeable advantage for Nd:KGW.
